Ruby follows me downstairs, who has obviously been woken up by the noise too. She joins me by the window, a look of disgust filling her face. "Is he okay? He must've been attacked!" She whispers, her face gradually losing its colour.
Alan, a man who lives down the street, jogs over to help him, who, judging by the fact that his shirt is only buttoned half way up has only just woken up too. "Alan's gone to help him, but we should call an ambulance. Give me your phone." She pulls out her phone from her pocket, obviously reluctant to let me hold it. She's extremely protective of her things, especially her phone.
Just before I dial the last number, a horrifying sound startles me. I drop the phone, smashing the screen. I've only spoken to Alan a few times, but that's definitely his scream that I can hear. The injured man has grabbed on to Alan's face and is digging his bloody teeth into his neck. I grab my keys from the kitchen table, pull open the door and rush outside. I try to push him off, but he just looks up at me and continues eating Alan. I can tell that Alan is dead, just by looking at his pale, expressionless face.
I don't know what to do. It feels like my heart and stomach are jumping around inside my body. I shout for help but no one comes. I tell him to stop, but he ignores me. I run inside and grab the sharpest knife in the kitchen, but by the time I'm back outside even more of Alan is gone. I plunge the knife into his leg but he doesn't even flinch.
"What the hell?" The crazy man tears open his stomach, ripping out his intestines and shoving them in his mouth. I scream from pure horror and vomit on the side of the street, but he continues eating, not even acknowledging my presence.
I lunge at him and stab him in the back, finally directing his attention from the corpse below him. "I'm so sorry," He stands up and slowly advances toward me. I stab him in the stomach this time, but it still makes no difference.
"Someone help me!" I yell as loud as I can, hoping for one of my neighbours to come to my aid. But the only sounds I hear are the low growling noises coming from the murderer. "Ruby!" Right now I need her more than ever, but she's nowhere to be seen. She's abandoned me in important situations before, but nothing like this. "Ruby, help me!"
I manage to kick him in the chest before he grabs hold of me, pushing him to the ground. He tries to bite my face while I wrestle to keep him down. I do the only thing I can think of and stab him in the heart, but still, it makes no difference.
"How do I kill you?" I want to wait for the police to arrive, but there's a chance he'll just kill them too. If I stay in this position for much longer, he'll work himself free and kill me, then maybe even go after Ruby. I have to stop him. A horrifying realization hits me. I have to do the only thing that can ensure death, no matter how horrifying.
I tighten my grip on the handle of the knife and scream, pushing the knife through his left eye and through to his brain. His body goes lifeless as his head hits the concrete. My heart feels like it's going to explode. I lie down on the pavement next to his body and scream a cold, sickening cry.
Tears stream down my face. I sob until my face and chest start burning. I look over to poor, innocent, Alan, his half eaten intestines strewn out in the middle of the road. I vomit for the second time, not even caring that I'm still lying on the blood-coated concrete.
What did he kill Alan? What's wrong with him? I'm guessing that it was because of a mental disorder, perhaps influenced by an overdose of drugs. And now they're both dead because I couldn't get there fast enough. What have I done?
