Amelia, what the hell are you doing? You don’t even know this guy and you’ve just let your guard down. Even picturing him as Evan isn’t going to make him like you. Stop it, stop it now.
Before his lips touched mine I finally broke the spell and moved my head away.
“Please, don’t.” I stepped away from him towards my hanging picture. I was nothing like Evan and I certainly wasn’t going to act like him. I felt James’s gaze burning into my back. As I turned round I noticed Evan leaning against the door frame.
“I think I will go now,” James said as he grabbed his work case.
“You don’t have to go on my account,” Evan mocked. James glared at Evan as he passed him by the door. James stopped behind him.
“You’ve got my card with my number; if you ever need anything don’t hesitate to call.” James mentioned. Evan watched him until he disappeared down the hallway and then snapped his head back to me. “I thought you didn’t have a boyfriend.”
Evan glared at me, waiting impatiently for an answer. I shook my head. “He’s not,” I replied. “He’s just a bit of fun.” I stared at Evan to see his reaction. His expression turned into a frown. He knew I was mocking him. He parted his lips to say something, but I jumped in before he could. “Can’t I have a bit of fun?”
“But I thought we were getting on well?”
“Don’t even say that to me, you hypocrite!”
He arched an eyebrow. He was playing dumb. I wanted to show him not to make a fool of me. Grabbing his arm, I pulled him towards the window and pointed at my picture. I watched Evan’s eyes widen at my final piece. I could tell he liked it. A smile escaped but it slipped away before he could see it. But soon I composed myself again. I wasn’t letting him get the better of me and think he could use me whenever he wanted.
I then pointed out of the window, in the direction I saw him earlier. Evan leant over slightly and noticed what I was pointing at. I could tell he recognised the area – considering he was down there not even an hour ago.
“We were getting on well? You thought wrong! Don’t make fun of me.” I grabbed my bag and walked out of the room. I didn’t let him have another word.
I heard him chasing after me, but I kept walking, increasing my pace as I headed down the corridor. Shortly after I stopped and waited for him to catch up.
“If you’re going to make out with someone, you could have done it somewhere else rather than under the art building, are you doing this on purpose? Is this all just a game to you? Maybe your girlfriend was right,” I snapped. I went to turn away again, but Evan grabbed my arm.
“Please, give me another chance,” Evan begged. “It won’t happen again. I was stupid to do that. I’m not used to feelings like these.” Even though I was still mad at him, my heart lightened. He’s playing you, don’t believe him.
“Stupid? Did you know how happy I was when you told me you liked me? Although I didn’t exactly know what you meant by it, but it still made me happy. But I guess I know what you really meant now.”
“I do like you. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. Please, give me a chance to make it up to you,” Evan pleaded.
“You’ve ran out of chances. A guy is supposed to make you happy, but you don’t. You upset me.” There was a long pause and his eyes were locked with mine. It was intense trying to keep his gaze; my face was hot from beneath his eyes. “I don’t know much about you, but I know enough to realise that you’ve built a wall around your heart. When was the last time you let someone in?”
I held onto my bag tightly, his expression dropped and his eyes fell to the floor. He didn’t say anything else. I could feel a burst of anger enter my body. I kicked the wall and stomped off. Evan didn’t say anything but followed me close as we headed for the bus stop.
When we eventually arrived, I turned to face him.
“Amelia, I am stupid and all I have done was made mistakes with you. When I’m around you, you make me feel special. You are important to me; I can talk to you about things I’ve never told anyone, not even my friends.” I listened but didn’t reply. “I honestly, do really like you and I mean that deep down in here,” he said, pointing to his heart. “Let me give you the chance to getting to know me – you will be surprised.”
For some reason watching Evan beg for another chance made me feel like I was the one in control. It was like the last time; he was on his knee’s begging. I don’t want to give him another chance but, I don’t know how I feel. I have to be in control and I have to keep it. I can’t let Evan play with my emotions. My feelings are real but I’m not sure about his.
“If I told you to stop seeing that girl, Kym, would you?” I asked. Evan stood there staring at me. I knew he would not leave her. I knew he cared for her more than he thought he did. I hung my head as I waited for him to answer. When he didn’t, I moved away from him.
“I won’t go near her. I’ll end it. She doesn’t mean anything to me.” I stood in silence and turned my gaze to him. I could see he was serious. “I want to make it up to you, and I will do whatever you want me to do. Please give me a chance to prove myself.”
I swallowed hard, and as much as I wanted to turn away, I couldn’t tear my gaze away from him. Why did he look so pitiful and hurt? I should be the one who’s hurt!
“I’ve lost all my trust in you; it’s not going to work. And this thing always hurts someone, even if it’s not me or you. You might be that type of person, but I’m not!” I shook my head, trying to get rid of the thoughts that wanted me to forgive him.
“I’m not that type of person. Let me show you, let me earn your trust back,” he said. “I will beg on my knees again if I have to.” He started to shuffle in front of me.
“Wait, don’t. If you can earn my trust, I might just consider it. But one foot out of line, you will just be the boy on the bus to me. You have a lot of earning to do.” I sighed. I gave into him to easily, but his eyes are just full of sadness and sorrow. He sent my mind into a complete frenzy, it was hard for me to control.
“This can be a fresh start,” Evan said. He put his hand out for me to shake – I looked at him, but still took his hand.
“Hi, my name is Evan Wood – pleased to meet you.”
