"Didn't think that you sleep until the last minute, Zaya"
"Oh Draco." Zaya glanced as she was tying her long dark chestnut-colored hair " I was thinking about skipping breakfast to sleep more but I figured I'll be starving within two hours if I didn't eat"
Zaya looked over the common room and saw no one but her and Draco there. "everyone went to eat breakfast, why didn't you go?"
"I was writing a letter"
"For your parents?"
"Just for my mother, there are some stuff I forgot to tell her before I leave"
The young girl held her bag and started walking to the door. Before she opened it she turned around and looked at Draco in questioning look "Are waiting for an invitation?"
As they were walking to through the halls Draco glanced at the clock on the wall and gasped "We have 20 minutes left for breakfast, we won't make it if we were walking!"
The two looked at each other in surprise and in the same tame they both shouted "Run!!"
Laughing as they were running they finally got to the great hall, sat and started eating as fast as possible.
"Someone slept in on their first day" said the dark skinned Blaise Zabini.
"It wasn't me" said Draco as he was laughing at Zaya's not caring face.
"Am I supposed to laugh?" Zaya asked.
"No need to, just finish your food" laughed Blaise.
After finishing their breakfast they headed to their first class of the day. Professor McGonagall's Transfiguration class. As the students were sitting reading what the professor told them to read while she was sitting on her desk in a cat form, Blaise passed a note to Zaya.
"Do you think that this class is important?"
"I think it would be cool if I was able to turn anyone who annoy me into an animal or something like that hahaha"
Suddenly Ron Weasley and Harry Potter burst through the door, panting.
"Whew, amazing, can you imagine the look on old McGonagall's face if we were late?" whispered the red-head.
The cat jumped from the desk, turned to Professor McGonagall and stared at the two.
"That was bloody brilliant." Amazed, said Ron.
McGonagall looked at the boy "Thank you for that assessment, Mr. Weasley. Maybe if I were to transfigure Mr. Potter and yourself into a pocket watch, maybe one of you would be on time."
"We got lost" Said Potter.
"Then perhaps a map? I trust you don't need one to find your seats." Continued McGonagall.
On the laughs of the students, the two sat on their desks silently.
"What an embarrassment, huh?" whispered Zaya to Draco, who was holding his laugh.
After finally finishing their classes everyone went to the great hall some were doing their homework, some were eating and some were chatting.
"I am tired" whined Zaya, putting her head on the table as if it was a pillow.
"We didn't do anything, did we?" Crabbe interrupted.
"She is a girl! Of course she will get tired" added Goyle as he was rolling his eyes.
"Excuse me?" The girl rose her head from the table in disbelief. "You think I'm tired because I'm a girl? I can totally win in a fight with you"
"I would like to see you try" replied the boy with a smug on his face, crossing his arms and leaning on his chair.
With furrow eyebrows Zaya stood up, slapped her hands on the table in anger and with a scary voice she said "Let's go outside then!"
"No, I don't want to get a detention on my first day." The boy shrugged.
"Scared aren't you?" Zaya looked at him with a look that was sure of what she said, she leaned towards him, looked in his eyes and without a blink she said calmly "You are scared that.. a girl can.. hurt.. you.. badly"
Without taking a glance on the surprised faces of who heard her, she turned and got out of the great hall going to the library. There was sitting Hermione Granger who was approached by Zaya.
"Hello, Granger." Said Zaya quietly as she was pulling a chair next to Hermione. "I am Zaya Alvis"
With a questioning look on her face she answered "Hi" .
"What are you doing here in the library, alone?"
"Doing homework. I know I won't get any mail and it's so loud in the great hall anyway." she took her eyes off the book and asked "Why are you here?"
"Had an argument with Goyle"
"Why? What happened?" she asked curiously as she turned her seat to face Zaya.
"I was tired and he said that I am tired because I am a girl," she paused "so I suggested a fight between the two of us to see which one would win after I told him that I would totally kick his ass."
"And then?" Hermione asked in excitement.
"Well he got scared and said that he wouldn't want a detention on his first day so I told him that he is just scared that he is going to get hurt from a girl." Zaya explained.
"Wow!" Hermione said with amaze "That is amazing"
"You know? I like you, we should be friends." Zaya smiled.
"Are you sure?" Hermione said with a worried tune "you are Malfoy's friend he wouldn't be happy about that."
"What does me being friend with you have with me being Draco's friend?" Zaya asked.
"He hates me. Because I come from a muggle family" She explained while looking at her hands.
"I don't think that. Draco is nice" Zaya furrowed and defended. "I am sure that if you got to know each other you'll be good friends, however even if you didn't become friends I can still be your friend because he has nothing to do with it"
"Zaya." A voice from behind was heard "What are you doing with the filthy mud-blood?"
"She has a name, Draco" the annoyed Zaya said. "Her name is Hermione Granger and she is my friend"
"Your friend?!" the boy hissed as he was getting closer to the girls. "You barely know her!"
"And I barely know you, Draco. I would like you to step aside, me and my friend are going somewhere that both of us are respected in" Zaya said calmly.
Zaya and Hermione both got up from their seats and headed towards the door when Zaya turned to Draco and said "I don't think that I would like having a friend who doesn't respect my other friends, thank you"
Draco stood there, in the middle of the library in shock, watching her go out with the mud-blood who is friends with a Weasley and the boy who lived.
"Are you sure about this, Zaya?" asked Hermione.
"Yes."
"Were are we going now?" asked Hermione.
"I apologize for dragging you into this, I was planning on going to sleep" laughed Zaya.
"Oh it's fine, we're friends after all right?" Laughed Hermione.
The two were talking about their first day and laughing until they got separated so each one can go to her house's common room, go to her bed and sleep for the rest of the night, even though curfew wouldn't start in more than two hours. As soon as Zaya got in Slytherin's common room she saw Draco standing in front of her and dragging her outside.
"Draco, what do you think you're doing? Let go of my hand" Said the hurt Zaya as the boy was dragging her in the darkness.
"Listen" Draco mumbled as he made her sit on a chair in one of the allies. "I am sorry, I didn't mean to insult you or the Granger, okay?"
"I know" Zaya sighed "I know that you are nice, I just wanted her to know that"
"So you're not mad at me? Cool"
They stopped talking for a moment, both sitting next to each other on that chair just looking at the candle inn the lantern in front of them, burning slowly until Draco broke the silence "You know," he begun "you don't have to act tough in front of the boys. I am not saying that you're weak, no. Just don't show them the power that you have, it is dangerous. I will make Goyle apologize so don't do that again."
"So you want me to stay silent watching someone insulting me and do nothing about them so they can mock me again?"
"I can deal with them for you, just don't show them your power, please"
"Why? I can protect myself."
"Trust me on this, it is dangerous for you now"
"Why is it dangerous?" said Zaya with a raised eyebrow.
"You will know later, just trust me." Draco looked at her as he smiled to convince her.
When she seemed convinced, Zaya stood up and said "I think it's time to go back"
"Yeah let's go" Draco said as he stood up from his chair.
Zaya started walking to the common room, not feeling the gaze from afar burning her.
"I can bring her to you within two days, sir"
