“A single kit!” Mosswind exclaimed. “Interesting…” she added quietly. Silverkit could feel harsh licking on her flank. Soon after, Silverkit felt her small body being lifted by her scruff, carried to a warm surface, a she-cat’s belly, when she heard a sharp yowl from outside. Silverkit heard paws thumping wildly all around her, but the she-cat she was huddled next to didn’t move.
Silverkit woke up in a small cavern. She could hear the steady rise and fall of the other kit’s chests, and her mother’s. She still hadn’t opened her eyes, but she could somehow see her surroundings in her dreams.
Silverkit was born two sunrises ago, and could hear the wind outside, with the soft drops of rain trickling into where she, queens, and other kits slept. Silverkit heard cats around her waking up, and some-cat meowed,
“Bushpaw! Creekpaw! How are you doing with your training? Creekpaw? Have you been good to Mosswind?”
Silverkit heard mumbles of answers, when what felt like a tom, bumped into her, and her eyes began to open.
“Oh, hey!” he meowed. “Deerheart, Silverkit opened her eyes!”
Deerheart nudged Moonwhisker, Silverkit’s mother, awake and whispered,
“Moonwhisker, Silverkit opened her eyes!”
Moonwhisker looked at Silverkit.
Silverkit looked at Moonwhisker.
Moonwhisker had beautiful white fur, slicked back. She also had dark blue eyes that looked like midnight. Do I have white fur and blue eyes? Silverkit asked herself.
After a moment’s hesitation, Moonwhisker spoke.
“Silverkit! You’ve opened your eyes!
“Yeah!” Silverkit squeaked.
She looked around at the nursery and stood up. She saw a large brown tom with yellow eyes, and a light greyish-brown she-cat with pool blue eyes. Silverkit guessed the she-cat was Creekpaw, and that the tom was Bushpaw. She then noticed two she-cats, with larger bellies than her mother’s. There was a light brown she-cat with a few white spots on her flank, the one that was awake, and a light grey she-cat that was asleep.
“Hello, Silverkit,” the light brown she-cat said quietly. “I am Deerheart. Bushpaw and Creekpaw are my kits.” tapping them each on the shoulder with her tail tip.
“Apprentices!” Bushpaw growled, but with no hostility in his voice.
“You will always be my kits,” Deerheart purred.
“Anyway, this is Featherfur,” shifting her ears in the direction of the light grey she-cat asleep next to her.
“Featherfur and Deerheart are expecting kits,” Moonwhisker explained. “That’s why their bellies are larger than most cats’.”
“Okay!” Silverkit mewled.
Bushpaw and Creekpaw were whispering with Deerheart, and she then nodded. Then the apprentices turned around and began speaking.
“Silverkit, would you like to see around the camp?” Bushpaw asked.
“I’m sure the warriors would like to see you,” Creekpaw added.
“Sure!” Silverkit squeaked.
The sunlight outside felt like it nearly blinded Silverkit.
“Wowww……” She gasped in shock of how big the camp was.
How am I ever going to know my way around here? Silverkit asked herself.
All the warriors Silverkit saw gazed at her quietly. The first cat that spoke to her was a black she-cat with dark blue eyes who told Silverkit to say hello to her mother, not even really realizing that this was her first time outside of the nursery. But then one cat gazed at her for a split second, then raced over to her.
“Hello! Silverkit am I correct?”
“Yes,” Silverkit mewed.
“I am Silentpaw!” the white she-cat announced to her.
She isn’t very silent… Silverkit thought to herself.
“Would you like me to show you around?” she asked.
“Well-” Silverkit began, but Bushpaw cut her off.
He yawned. “You better do that, Silentpaw, I’m getting a bit tired, and I’m sure Creekpaw has things to do with Mosswind.” walking away, signaling to his sister that she should follow.
“Yes,” Creekpaw agreed. “See you later, Silverkit!” she mewed while following her brother.
“Alright,” Silentpaw began, walking towards a cavern with the entrance draped with vines. “This is Heatherstar’s den, she’s our leader, and also my mentor!”
Silverkit poked her head into the den and walked in a few tail lengths, when Silentpaw called her out. “You better not go too far in there. Heatherstar will smell the fresh nursery scent.”
“Hello, Silentpaw.” a beautiful pale she-cat with purple eyes walked up to them.
“Hi, Heatherstar! I was just showing Silverkit around camp.” Silentpaw meowed.
“Do you mind if I take over?” Heatherstar asked.
“Not at all! “ Silentpaw exclaimed, walking towards a pile of rodents, birds, and rabbits. “See you later Silverkit!”
“So, Silverkit, how do you like the camp so far?” Heatherstar asked.
“It’s… really big!”
Heatherstar let out a mrrow of laughter.
“You’ll get used to it eventually!” she reassured Silverkit. “Would you like to visit the medicine den?”
“Medicine den? Is that where Creekpaw sleeps? Is she a medicine cat?” Silverkit asked curiously.
“Creekpaw doesn’t sleep in the medicine cat den, she sleeps in the apprentices’ den with Silentpaw, Bushpaw, and Sunpaw.” Heatherstar began.
“Sunpaw?” Silverkit meowed quietly, so quietly that Heatherstar didn’tseem to hear her. “Mosswind sleeps in the medicine cat den. Creekpaw is amedicine cat apprentice. Mosswind is the actual medicine cat. She is Creekpaw’s mentor. Creekpaw will earn her warrior name when she takes the trip to Star Cavern when Mosswind feels she has learned the basic to advanced medicine cat skills. She will still remain to be a medicine cat apprentice even when she has earned her warrior name, and Creekpaw will become a full medicine cat when Mosswind goes to StarClan.”
“That sounds interesting!” Silverkit mewed.
“Yes.” Heatherstar responded. “Here, let me show you.”
Silverkit drank in the sweet smell of herbs when she entered the medicine den. Healing medicines, berries, herbs, seeds and more lined the walls in claw dug shelves. There was a tunnel leading to where Silverkit couldn’t see. Creekpaw or Mosswind were nowhere to be seen, but the call of Heatherstar was enough to bring Mosswind out from the tunnel which led to her nest.
“Greetings, Heatherstar,” Mosswind purred dipping her head to Heatherstar. “And who is this you’ve brought along with you?”
“This is Silverkit.” Heatherstar responded. “You remember her from Moonwhisker’s kitting?”
“Oh yes!” Mosswind exclaimed. “The single kit!”
“Single kit…?” Silverkit asked quietly.
“Yes, single kit.” Mosswind began. “You have no siblings. Just you! Anyway, my name is Mosswind. I am medicine cat of our clan. Creekpaw is my apprentice. This is the medicine cat den.”
“What are all these… things?” Silverkit asked, glancing at the green, red, purple, and flower-filled shelves.
“These are herbs,” Mosswind flicked her tail to an area of greens. “Berries,” She angled her ears to a corner of purple and red berries. “And these over here are other plants and whatever isn’t berries or leaves.”
“What is this..?” Silverkit sniffed a pile containing small white flowers, bits of bark, and some star-shaped blue and pink flowers.
“This is chamomile, it helps to strengthen the heart and soothe the mind. It’s used for traveling when cats go to Star Cavern.” Mosswind explained, lifting up the white flowers. “Oh, and this is alder bark, it helps to ease toothaches.” tapping the bark with her tail tip. Then, lifting up the blue and pink star shaped leaves, Mosswind went on. “This one is important, they are borage leaves, nursing queens like your mother chew and eat these leaves so they can produce more and better milk for young kits like you! Oh, and they are also used to bring down fevers…” she trailed off.
After seemed like moons of exploring the medicine cat’s den, Mosswind finally realized how late it was getting. “Oh, StarClan! I’ve completely lost track of time! You better go back to the nursery or your mother will be worried sick! I’ll show you around the rest if the camp tomorrow,”
“Thank you, Mosswind!” Silverkit purred.
