I was able to get twenty-eight thousand neos for the horse, something that amazed me. It made me sure that most of the people didn't even know what they were bidding for at some point. It ended up going towards a rich, older merchant whose previous lead horse had been killed by a demon when traveling. Since my horse had experience with merchant trails, it was valuable because of its trait and previous training. With this amount of money, I could buy two houses if I wanted!
I planned to spend as much as I could so that I wouldn't have to lug around this giant bag of gold coins, so I looked around for a little bit. The first thing I bought was a nice backpack with a bladder to hold water, and then I went around and got some nice, durable clothes and a new pair of shoes. I then bought some stuff to cure water, and as much food as I could fit in my bag. There was a nice hidden pocket in the backpack where I was able to stuff about a thousand neos. The backpack was heavy, but I was happy to finally have stuff that belonged to me. Even after all that I had bought, I had only spent about fifteen hundred neos, barely denting my stash. I thought about investing in some weapons, since they were really expensive, but I knew that they would do nothing against demons.
I passed by a vendor stand where there was a man shouting about wolf dogs. Behind him were cages of large wolves with red eyes, and I narrowed my eyes, crossbreeding. It was becoming more and more popular, where people would have their hounds mutate with some animal, creating something half demon, half whatever else. There were rumors that people have tried it with humans, but no one knows what the real outcome was.
Figuring they would be helpful, I walked up to the man, "what type of care do they need? Can they kill a demon?"
He laughed, "they aren't hounds, son. But if you had a bunch of them, maybe. They're running at three thousand a piece. Now I know you're thinking you could get a somewhat decent horse for that, but they can fend for themselves when you're travelling, and maybe even bring back something for you. They're mainly for sensing demons though, which is better than traveling without a clue, and I right? Besides, they have at least ten years on them, and horse you could buy at their price has no more than four."
The man had a point, and I had too much money on my hands anyway. I narrowing my eyes, "how will I know that they will stick with me?"
The man held up a wrist, showing a black band with a red sigil on it, "this forces them to stay and obey whoever wears the bracelet."
"You said they go for three thousand?"
"Any of the lower wolves. They are creatures that pack together. I only have one alpha, and sorry to say, but I'm keeping him. I have a few betas though, going for five a piece."
I figured that they would be helpful, and despite not wanting to buy one, I went ahead anyway, "I'll take two of those, and three of the three thousands."
We made the transaction, and I received five of the black bracelets. He went over to his cages, and looked for the matching sigils, and lifted the cage doors. Suddenly five gigantic wolves were around me, sniffing me and my bag. I pushed away the biggest one, who was getting too close to my face with its wet nose. I thanked the man and walked away, the five huge wolves following me close behind. It was weird, knowing that they were going to be with me for a while.
I walked into a run down inn, wanting the chance to actually sleep for once. I didn't plan on staying too long, as outsiders weren't really welcome. The innkeeper seemed a tad frightened at my five new companions, but I explained that they were crossbreeds of hounds and wolves, and they wouldn't do anything bad. I paid twenty-five neos for a larger room with two full sized beds. The man showed me in, gave me the key, and left. I made sure that I locked the door once I heard his footsteps leave.
"Sorry, guys," I awkwardly spoke to the wolves, "but I haven't slept in while, and so I'm going to do that now..." They seemed to understand, and began finding spots on the floor. I sat on one of the beds and stared at them for a second, "uhh..." They all looked up at me, waiting for my next words. I scratched the back of my head, "you guys can use the beds."
The two betas were the first to respond, jumping up on the other bed, growling at each other before taking different ends. The smaller three whined, going back to the floor. I laughed a little before beckoning the smallest over, parting the spot between the betas, "it's going to have to be three to a bed." The little wolf yipped in excitement, and found a nice spot between them.
I went back to the other bed, pulling the other two up, and eventually found sleep.
