I picked up my clothes, set it back into my locker and went out to the gym. On my way, I noticed the girl with the wavy hair again. Hoping I wouldn’t accidently harass her again, I crept around her slowly and quietly, hoping I wouldn’t get her attention. I soon got to the door and put my hand on the handle and was about to open it until:
“You really look stupid in those shorts.”
I jumped around to see her staring at me with a smirk and in her trademark hand on hip pose.
“I-I-I thought I-I…” I stuttered silently. I panicked internally for a second and all of the sudden before I could think I shouted:
“S-Sorry to bother you!” and ran out into the gym. I’ve NEVER thought I’ve spoke that loud in public in my life!
When I got out of the locker room I saw a bunch of people doing stretches or what seemed to be warming up. I joined in with a few stretches and yoga poses like butterfly, hands to toes, and a few squats. It was really awkward, but I think it would be more awkward If I was the only one NOT doing it.
I was about to finish a hands to toes move, but I was interrupted by a loud, booming voice that belonged to the gym teacher.
“Welcome to Physical Education 7th graders! I am your teacher, Mr. Johnson. Today as we get started we will introduce ourselves to each other. So, let's get in a circle and start!”
After a split second, everyone was standing in a circle. Then Mr. Johnson spoke again.
“This is how It’s going to go, Say your first name and last name then say what your favorite moving activity is. I’m going to do an example, ‘I am Aladdin Johnson and my favorite activity is running.’ We are going to go clockwise around the circle.”
After what seemed like forever, it finally got to the girl with the wavy blonde hair. Eager to learn her name, I listened to every syllable she spoke.
“My name is Emma Parks and I like gymnastics.”
So, the girl’s name was Emma. Good to know. After another minute, It was finally my turn.
When the person next to me stopped talking, my heart started to run a million miles per minute. I felt my knees start to shake, and sweat roll down the back of my head. I tried speaking, but what came out was a shy, quiet stutter.
“I-I-I am Eliska W-Wadham, a-and I l-like...”
There was a sudden pause for a second.
“...biking?”
For a second there I thought that I was a little spider surrounded by cats, devilishly staring down at their prey. When the next person started talking I could see Emma’s mouth move as if she was repeating my name under her breath.
After that scenario, Mr. Johnson wanted us to run.
Well, it wasn’t just running, we were playing a game he called “Pirates of the Caribbean” Where there were six teams on separate mats,
and we had four cones each mat. Other teams would try to knock each other's cones down, and if all your cones are down, then your team has to go to a lifeboat (another mat) until someone on your team knocks another team’s cones down. Also we knocked each other's cones down with balls, so each team had to elect one person to run and get the balls. That person was the runner.
My team decided that I was going to be runner because no one else wanted to be it, and I don’t particularly like running.
I slipped on a mat at one point trying to pick up a ball, me and another girl were about to pick up a ball and I ran into her, bounced off of her, and fell on my tailbone on the hard gym floor. Also I accidently knocked down a pin on my team.
When gym was about done, Mr. Johnson told us to go to the locker rooms and do whatever we need to do.
When I entered the locker room, I was sweating mercilessly. Also, I was panting like a dog. Walking by Emma to get to my locker, I heard her talking to her friends about me.
“I almost lost it when Eliska slipped trying to pick the ball up!”
I heard Emma say.
“Oh, and when she ran into Rayna,” I heard the second girl say and giggled afterward.
“She bounced off of her like she was a bouncy ball!” the third girl added and they all laughed.
“Emma, Jayne, Mackenzie,” I heard the fourth girl say, “Why are you laughing at her? I never saw her last year and she might be new. I wouldn’t want to give her a hard time, would you?”
“Suzy,” Emma said, “We don’t care if she’s new. We also think she looks stupid out on the gym floor.”
“Emma, what if someone was talking like that about you? You’d feel terrible, wouldn’t you?”
“We’d beat the kid up before they could say a word to Emma!” the second girl shouted. Those words made my heart jump so high, it was at the moon.
What I thought of doing at this point was walking up to them and asking what they were talking about, but I think that that would get me in even more humiliation.
“Same concept, Mackenzie!”
“Look, Suzy, I think you should keep your big nose out of other people’s business.”
“I think you should keep your pretty mouth shut, Emma!”
My eyes widened at those words. Poor Suzy must have gotten herself onto very thin ice.
It was probably best to get my stuff while I listened closely. It was nothing but silence for what seemed like a minute, I heard what sounded like someone slapping a raw piece of meat..
Emma most likely just slapped Suzy.
I never thought I’d cause this much drama on my first day.
After that, I didn’t hear anything from that conversation.. SO I just continued on. I changed back into my normal clothes in a bathroom stall. As soon as I walked out Emma was standing there.
“I Liked the gym uniform better on you.” she said examining her fingernails. “You still looked stupid in that but you still look stupid.”
It was probably best to ignore her and not say a word.
I was halfway to the locker room exit when I felt a tight yank on my shoulder. I turned around to see Emma standing there with a hand on her hip.
“Why so silent?” She asked. “I’ve only heard possibly ten words from you. If that..”
Okay, so now I had to speak. Nervous to speak, I said.
“J-Just leave me a-alone.” I paused for a second. “P-please.”
As I was walking out of the gymnasium, I felt another tap on my shoulder.
I turned around thinking it was Emma, saying “Please stop!” When I turned around, instead of Emma, I saw a girl who was taller than me by two inches. She had short whitish blonde hair. It was also very wavy.
She was also wearing the cutest light blue panda shirt I’ve ever seen in my life.
“Oh, well, sorry to bother you..” I recognised the voice and I remember it belonging to Suzy’s. So that’s what she looked like. She started walking away until I ran up to her and stopped.
“Wait! I-I-I thought you were E-emma! I apologize!”
Suzy stared at me for a second. And then reached her hand out to shake mine.
“Ok, I’m Suzy.”
I looked at her for a second and reached my hand out.
“E-Eliska.”
“I know. From earlier today. Also from Emma.”
“I like your shirt! I-I mean, I know your name t-too! From earlier w-when you were talking to E-emma a-about me! I deeply appreciate you standing up for m-me!”
Suzy stopped for a second and looked at me.
“So you heard.”
“Y-yes, I did!”
Suzy stared at me for a second then smiled.
“Are you new?”
“Yeah..”
“Well I think that we should know eachother a bit more. See you at lunch?”
“Y-yeah! That's sounds pretty cool!”
My First hour and a half at school:
I have already made a friend.
I have already made an enemy.
I have already made myself a bad reputation.
I also made myself late to creative writing because my locker wouldn’t open.
