Lost
Chapter 1: The Enslaved Girl
By: Samantha Butcher
The New York breeze numbed my face, froze my hands, and stiffened my legs. It was 1945, about one month since the end of WWII. Now I’m only about fifteen years old, but I’ve been living in Germany since I was born, until one day ago. I’m German, and it’s my first language. I’ve been on a ship for the last week, and I was hiding in a box, bathroom, and under a bed, because I have no money since, I lived in a box, and you know how that goes. I’ve been residing in an alley in a particular Postamt (Post Office) Box pretty much my whole life, until now to meet Pa; he’s my uncle, I think it’s why I came here, and because of WWII and like Hitler and stuff. I walked up to a small cottage next to a few apartments and knocked.
“Who is it? If your Liam go away boy.” An old man spoke in a gruff, mumbly voice as he peeked open the door. “Sabine?” The man uttered in shock.
“Uncle, person, someone?” I communicated with him.
“Come in, come in!” He conveyed gladly.
“Hi, random person who knows who I am… Just kidding I’ve met you when I was born for like five minutes, yes I remember.” I pronounced sounding smart.
“You speak German too?” He was talking as he studied my face. “Ja Kann ich, (Yes I can,) also I can speak a little French, Parce Que Je Suis element
incroyable.
(Because I’m so awesome)," I spoke arrogantly.
“What was my family like?” I muttered out of the blue.
“Your mother’s face was thin, big blue eyes, loved you so much but when the Nazi’s took your mom for shooting a soldier when she tried to, you know to save you when…” His voice trailed off.
“But your Dad, on the other hand, was handsome, strong and always wore jackets that were way too big for him; his eyes were full and green like the grass outside.” He expressed happily.
”What about Liam?” I spoke nervously.
He frowned, “Liam shaved half of his head, half bald and half hairy, he’s a bad kid now. He’s mugged me, that scoundrel his hair that he has is green, his eyes are narrow and blue like your mother's eyes.” He mumbled teary eyed.
“Your hair is blue, how?” The man realized amazed.
“Congenital birth defect, like my eyes, ones dark brown and the other is gray.” I delivered to the old man. “I remember when I saw dad in the crowd of one of Hitler’s speeches, I ran up to him but he pushed me to the ground, I saw that he was a Nazi soldier now, I know he was forced too,” I muttered looking at the carpet tears dripping from my eyes. “Hitler, böse, grausam, er hatte keine Gnade, ich hasste ihn (Hitler, evil, cruel, he had no mercy, I hated him).”
“Harsh” He whispered.
“I need my family back, uncle,” I pleaded.
“Then let’s find them.” He smiled.
Chapter 2: The Lost Family
“Why am I here again?” Liam mumbled.
“To help the sister you left!” Uncle Robert yelled.
“Katzenfutter Essen green (Go eat cat food),” I mumbled under my breath.
“You wanna go, princess!” Then Liam slapped me.
“I’m not a princess you pig!” I yelled pushing him, even though I am much smaller.
“I ain’t a pig! Why do you try to find them, they didn’t want you, dumme Puppe.” He snorted.
I walked away into the kitchen; I’m not a stupid doll, I’m smart and talented. Then I stared out the window and saw a boy, his hair was midnight black and wore a big blue sweatshirt with jeans and black shined shoes, he had money I could tell. His eyes were a deep blue, skin smooth and light with freckles on the side of his round face. He stared right back and waved, I disappeared into the hallway and grabbed the wallet on the table on rushed through the door.
“HEY!” My uncle yelled
“Gotta use this for stuff bye!” My voice trailed off as I rushed past the couches.
I sprinted from street to street and finally found The Brooklyn Mall, it’s large bright red sign. I ran inside and grabbed some clothes, tried them on, paid and darted back home. Out of breath I tossed them in the washing machine and collapsed onto the carpet.
“Quite the run you got, there and back in fifteen minutes.” Uncle Robert laughed stroking his long, bushy, white beard.
“Well, I only spent one hundred fifty dollars on your credit card,” I spoke still with barely any air in my lungs.
“One hundred fifty dollars!” He yelled aghast.
“Well I’ll be right back” I walked to a random room in the house.
I changed into a Frank Sinatra shirt and a gray button up coat and put on some skinny jeans someone on the street gave me that they made. I tossed on some simple gray boots and put on some long black socks. I walked around outside and saw the boy walk up behind me.
“Hi” He whispered shivering in the brutal cold, his jacket was partially open to let me see his blue tank top, that’s why he was cold.
“Why are you following me?” I smirked and coughed.
“Are you saying I’m a stalker?” He joked.
“No, your not watching my every single move inside a house or outside,” I corrected him.
“You looked at me first so...” The boy shrugged.
“Well you looked back!” I remarked shortly realizing why I left the house.
“I got so off topic with my Uncle Robert, dang es (dang it).” I slowly turned around.
“German? Es ist Nicht die Schönheit bedtime, Die Wir Lieben, labor Liebe bedtime, wen war schön find (It's not beauty which determines who we love but love determines whom we find beautiful)” He quoted.
“If you try to get me into your games, I won’t play.” I walked off.
“Wait but-” He stopped talking, though I never got his name.
I rushed home and went inside, and Liam was gone, but Uncle Robert was there on the floor laying silently eyes staring into space, then I realized there was clutter everywhere, things were gone and stuff was broken and messed up. Either Liam did this, or my dad is alive, well, no longer a Nazi, and came back.
Chapter 3: The Door
“UNCLE ROBERTS!” I screamed and sprinted up to him and felt his pulse, nothing. I yelled his name, slapped him around, poured some water on him, that’s when I saw the bottle of ether with a cloth lying there, next to it a syringe and tube of green liquid with a skull on it.
“No, no, no, no, no!” I touched the back of his head; it was wet, I placed my hand on my lap and saw the blood.
“This is just a dream, right?” I repeated to myself.
Then two cops crashed through the door and grabbed me telling me someone’s inside the kitchen, he was seen through the window by the boy I “met.”
They took me to the sheriff's department about three blocks away; they said I was going to be okay, and I’m safe now. When we arrived at the station, and they questioned me about what happened, I just said I didn't know or was silent then answered I didn’t know. I was at the station for two hours, then went home with one of the chief’s. But since I was staying with his family I was silent until his wife invited her best friends family and son over, it was the boy. I guess his name is Lucas.
In my brain I was nervous when dinner came, the deputy’s wife, Martha, made me go shopping with her to wear a dress, and I had to go to a salon and get my arms and legs waxed and I guess a lot of people were coming so I had to wear a turquoise dress with lace and I didn’t bother to wear shoes. I walked downstairs where everyone was there; women wore dresses with shiny jewelry while the men wore tuxedos and bow ties with slicked back hair. When I silently moved down the stairs while people stared at me, it was my hair probably, or my eyes, or something. My head was heavy of hairspray and bobby pins; seriously this isn’t a ball!
I blushed when people stared, in my brain, I was telling them to go away and just stop staring because it was creeping me out. I gently placed my feet on the hard tiled floor and passed some men and girls my age or older giggling at me, rich people these days don't seem to like me but like my new “parents” because they're cops. I was uncomfortable; reason one is Lucas keeps staring me down, and reason two is the “rich” girls are laughing it up and trying to spill stuff on me. Then I was done.
“Hey do me a favor and back off you stalkers” I snapped.
“Hey, we are not the ugly ones here.” Another girl snapped back.
“Okay stop girls” My kind of deputy dad spoke up.
I just walked away.
I ignored the other stares, and laughs and went upstairs to my bedroom. I sat on my bed and took a good look at my new bedroom; it was blue, and gray with white furniture and lights hung from the ceiling. I viewed the lights, and at the corner of my eye I saw a small light turquoise ukelele and smirked. I held it in my hands and stared out the window as the frost lightly laid on the grass and icicles hung from the roof. I strummed the firm strings lightly, and it sounded pitchy, and the music was wide. I heard laughing and chair legs screech
“Muss Ich Jetzt was seen (Do I have to eat now?)
“Yes!” The chief spoke up knocking on the door.
“Why won’t you let me starve to death, you wouldn’t care anyway you would just leave me to wither away anyway.” I groaned and sighed.
“Because you're important to us”, He spoke quiet pretending I couldn’t hear him.
My heart softened slightly, “Fine, I’ll eat delicious home made stuff” I grumbled while I slowly stuffed lamb and sweet potatoes in my face.
Everyone turned to the door as loud knocks filled the room, chief opened the door and my drink fell from my hand as the glass shattered on the floor. It was Matthäus Meyer Mueller my dad. My dad tipped his hat,
“Hello, I’m Sabine's father, I heard she was in your custody and I want her back.” The crowd was still silent, then the chief smacked his face.
“Do you know the heartbreak this girl has been in with you! You became a Nazi soldier and killed hundreds, your under arrest for murder of many civilians anything you say and do will be held against you in the court of law if you cannot afford a lawyer we will provide you one.
“I said give me the doggone girl!” As my dad pulled out a Welrod from his back pocket and pointed it too Chief Dillon with a crazed, bewildered look in his eyes as everyone gasped in horror trying to escape the room to reassure they weren’t in firing range. But Lucas stayed there silent, stunned and amazed at what seemingly was my last name. Then Chief pulled his pistol out as a loud boom filled the air, a tear streamed from Lucas’ face as well as mine. Chief had blood coming straight from his shoulder dripping down his left arm and leg. I was done, a ran up to the fight at the doorstep and shouted for Martha as my dad grabbed me by my hair to a small buggy parked sloppily on the side of the road.
“Es ist ok jetzt, du mit mir und wir sind wieder eine Familie. Du Onkel Roberts ist weg, dein Bruder ist vor Gericht gesorgt, jetzt ist es nur uns zusammen wieder als eine große, glückliche Familie. (It's ok now, you’re with me and we are a family again. Your Uncle Roberts is gone, your brother is taken care of in court, now it's just us together again as one big happy family.)
“Nein.” I commented.
“What did you say?” My father questioned.
“I said Nein.” Right as I full on bit his wrist (a technique I learned from being chased by soldiers long enough.)
“I enjoyed the time I had here and the life with Chief Dillon, but no that had to be taken away just like Liam just like Uncle Roberts and just like mom!” My dad lightly smacked me across my face, so I was silent. Then I tall figure came and jumped on top of my dad and started screaming for attention, it was Lucas. I ran inside and called authorities and changed in one minute. I sprinted back out with Lucas on the ground with the Welrod back in my dad's grasp pointed at Lucas and his fearful, sad face with tears and sweat dripping on his tie.
“I’ll go with you just, just don’t hurt Lucas, please.” I sighed.
“Sabine? No you don’t deserve you have so much more too live for.” Lucas cried.
“And you don’t, being in Germany felt like death already too me, I was surrounded by it there already I was waiting for my day to come during the holocaust already, my life just consisted of miserable heartbreak’s, starvation, death, bombs, and I lived in a sea of swastikas!” I spoke up feeling haunted by memories.
I walked up to my dad and pointed his arm away from the innocent boy and Lucas got up frantically and kissed me on the cheek, so I slapped him first before I hugged him bye.
“You try that ever again I will mess you up…” I whispered smiling.
My dad dropped the gun as ambulance alarms were heard off in the distance, so he grabbed my hair once more and shoved me into the small red car and gave a evil look to Lucas and we were gone, back to Germany, back to a world of destruction and death to start a new life with my dad and to forget Lucas, but I refuse those orders I will remember Lucas and will hold on to my old life with my dad.
Chapter 4: The Crash
My fingers tapped the seat in front of me while my legs kicked around the car.
“Why aren’t you wearing your uniform. You’re sure acting like you were when you were in it.” I mumbled.
“Forget about the boy, he was no use to anybody…”He exclaimed.
“You're wrong! How would you know anything since you were brainwashed by those, those PIGS! He saved my life! But you wouldn’t understand because you didn’t even care about mom!” I juried.
“ENOUGH!” He turned to me.
I screamed as the town bus hurdled toward us and collided right into us, letting the airbags fly out and my dad's seat flip back nearly knocking me out.
“This is your fault!” My dad’s nose gushed blood while a gash in my arm seeped blood onto my leg.
“You except America, you can go back to the streets in Germany!!” He shouted not noticing the injured people trapped inside the bus.
“Like you would care, you would just lock me in prison for leaving. Then you’ll starve me or something, I didn’t matter to you I just improve your ego now! What did they do to you, do you see what you did, you kidnapped me and are leaving injured people in the bus to potentially die, you're locking me in here with a deathly gash in my arm the feels like more then I can describe! BUT NO YOUR EGO OF WHAT YOU CALL CARING IS WHAT IS IMPORTANT NOT THE SON YOU FRAMED, THE PERSON YOU JUST KILLED WITH YOUR, YOUR POISON! I WISH YOU NEVER EXISTED THEN I WOULDN’T BE LIKE THIS I DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY DID BUT I DON’T KNOW WHY MOM EVER LOVED YOU!” I screamed in tears thrashing my body from the seatbelt taped to the buckle. “Sometimes, I wonder if you're even my dad.” My voice lowered.
My dad sighed, and wiped his nose of blood. Opened the glove compartment and pulled out a small pistol and cried a little.
“Don’t even-” I started.
“But i don’t deserve-” He began
“You can fix it-” I argued.
“But you said-” He questioned
“I didn’t mean it-” I juried.
“Then why did you say it.” My dad mumbled.
“It just came out I don’t-” I stopped.
“Don’t even try, it won’t change my mind…” He barked.
