Where am I? What am I lying on, a bed? Am I in a bed? I picked my head up from what felt like a pillow. Let me guess, covers. I rubbed my face with my hands. What? I don’t feel grimy or overly exhausted. Weird. A sudden knock on the room’s door startled me.
“Honey? Are you up? You’re going to be late.” said an old sweet voice. Who the heck is that? And where the heck am I? I gulped and stood out of bed. On the beside table was a Study Bible. I walked up to the mirror. I was clean, I didn’t need a shower at all. But where am I? And I have blond hair in the mirror that can’t be! I have black hair what the-. Oh, the door handle swung open and a girl strode in.
“Ryder mom wants you down now!” said the girl. Who’s she? She looks familiar. Way too familiar. I followed her downstairs.
“Ryann, come eat too.” said the woman. Darts hit my chest. No, she can’t be. Ryan? My, my sister? I looked at the girl clearer now. She had the same features as her the last time I remember her. But here she looks at least 12 years old. Ryan! Then I looked up. Now I know this isn’t real for sure. My parents are right in front of me. I gulped again. All the hopes I had in the last 11 years faded just like that. The only explanation was that i was dreaming. In the middle of a chase with the enemy? Strange.
I took my plate and sat next to ‘gulp’ Ryann at the table. I stared down at the food. I must have looked weird because in return my family was staring back at me.
“Honey,” began my illusioned mother. I clenched my fork harder at the memory of what those rotten scum did to the three I see before me. I almost went into tears remembering the last day I saw Ryann.
“Yeah,” I mumbled.
“You’re not yourself.” I dropped the form on the plate and stood up.
I gasped, now what! I opened my eyes after screaming and I was in a new scene. It wasn’t the chase or my dream family. I was near the ceiling to a cabin. I was on a bunk bed.
“Yo, Kenneth, get up.” a boy threw a pillow at my face. I climbed down from the bed and stared angrily at him.
“Who are you?” The boy thought I was nuts. I shook my head. Nevermind. How is this happening? I feel like I’m in the movie Inception. I had to figure this out or I would go insane!
“Delinquents! Get your butts down to the fire circle now!” yelled a man outside the cabin. Delinquents? I know I am but where was I? Oh let me guess a Juvi Camp. I didn’t want to but I followed the boy down the path. We were in a forest. Other boys, younger and even older than me crowded the gravel road. The large crowd of boys reached the circle. The general in charge stared at me.
“You there!” He pointed at me. I gulped. Now what? I walked over in front of the General.
“Yes sir?” I asked, trying to blend in.
“Where is your uniform young man? And what’s your name?” I gulped again. I looked down, I was in a t shirt and jeans. Another thing to get in trouble for, great. I shuffled my feet.
“I don’t have one sir, my name is Ryder Kenneth.” I said. I flinched when one of his large fists almost got my head.
“I’ll issue one for you then Kenneth. You must be another refugee, Am I right?” He asked. I stammered, well that was easy. Too easy for a Juvi camp.
“Get on to breakfest men!” I itched my way into the mess hall. It was like any other camp I’ve heard of. Wood, Wood and WOOD. A few guys my age motioned for me over to their spot in line.
“So we heard you’re a newbie at good ol’ Juniper Juvi Camp.” scoffed the tallest one. He had dark brown hair and stubble spotted his chin.
“That’s right.” I said, I’ve dealt with some nasty crowds in my day so i knew this wouldn’t be anything special. The tall guy stared me down and laughed.
“He’s no more a wimp than Poindexter over there!” He shoved a finger at a boy that looked not even fifteen yet. “Hey Macey!” the boy got up from his seat and joined us. He didn’t suit his rude name. He had black hair like me and bright green eyes. And he had no glasses. He looked frightened to be in their presence. I didn’t want him to think I was with them so I made a good impression and smiled.
“This is our personal punching bag.” the tall guy put an arm around the poor kid’s shoulders. I was disgusted at his comment. I clenched my fist. This guy would make a good punching guy for me. Rather him than the kid. The guy behind Macey punched him in the back and laughed. He hunched over in pain. That punch hurt him badly.
“Hey, stop that. He hasn’t done anything to you guys. And he’s just a kid.” The tall guy turned to his buddies and laughed.
“Haha, Sean, looks like you made a new friend! Lucky you!”
Sean, that must be his first name. I ignored the posse and helped Sean up. He brushed himself off and looked up at me.
“Thanks,-“
“Kenneth, Ryder Kenneth. No need to thank me Sean. Those guys are jerks.” I smiled. Then it hit me, why was someone like him in a place like this? Not something I should ask him though. We took places in line and got our breakfast. By that time one last free table stood. I took a seat across from me Sean sat. By the looks of it he was shy, not a bad guy at all. Kind of like me if he had to go through what i had. Actually I looked at him and saw a younger version of myself.
