You know it’s never a good thing when the first thing a person asks you is to help them find their missing son. It always, and I do mean always, lead to trouble. Either the kid is pulling a prank and going to get his rear handed to him later or he was legitimately taken and that’s a whole different can of worms. But… trouble is what a Black Coat handles best.
“Ma’am please take a deep breath” I implored waving my hand down in a not exactly subtle gesture for her to calm down a little. “I understand the gravity of the situation, but panicking isn’t going to help. Please try to calm down” as I spoke i subtly infused my words with just a touch of magic, a minor spell to help give my words more sway so those who hear take the hint. Already i can see her eyes glaze just slightly as her breathing became slower. A bit of a dirty trick perhaps, but a panicking person isn’t as liable to give all the details. “Now please, give me all the details”
In slow breaths the woman spoke clearly if a bit sluggishly. “My name is Sarah Moore, I’m a receptionist. My son is Thomas Moore he’s just ten years old. We were at my house getting ready for me to drive him to school when someone barged into our house. He… least I think it was a he they were wearing a hooded coat and had this scent of rotten meat around him. Before I knew it he came and threw me into the couch before grabbing my child and running off into a car. Last thing I knew was him saying some spell and I blacked out.”
Well that certainly narrowed the possibilities downed a bit. A break in and kidnapping… that doesn’t happen often unless someone was trying to make a statement… or setting someone else up. “Miss Moore please give me the following details, where was your house? Did you have any enemies, or anyone you knew that could’ve done this?”
Ms. Moore shook her head. “I c-couldn’t think of anyone who wanted to harm us. It’s just me and Thomas, and he’s a good boy he never got in trouble at school. He even managed to score high on his latest test” she spoke in a soft tone trying to bring some comfort to herself no doubt. “I live on 1232 West Madison Grove and 15th Ave… please you have to find him!” she said when i raised a hand.
“I’ll do everything I can. Do you have a number I can use to contact you? “ Miss Moore nodded handing me a business card for some sort of assisted living place. I slid it into my wallet thinking before nodding. “I’ll contact you as soon as I have any viable information, till then please stay in this place as long as you need to calm down.” I tipped my hat to her before making my way out, feeling the wind began to billow around me gently. Time to get to work.
After a bit of travel I managed to arrive at the scene of the crime. 1232 West Madison Grove and 15th Ave, a nice beige colored home with a white door badly clawed up and half off it’s hinges, a trashed couch on a glance inside… and lots and lots of yellow tape around. The investigative crew was here already, more so when a nice singsong voice warbled slightly behind me, a soft melodic hymn to me. “Black Coat get out of my crime scene!”
I turned to face a man a little bit taller than me with soft green eyes and a scowling face coming up. Soft blond curls around the head, a faint silver halo above him and dressed in an impossibly white coat… oh joy upon joys, an angelic white coat. “I said get out of my crime scene, you are obstructing justice.” he said coldly in his singsong tone.
Around this time you might be thinking what’s the difference between us, a Black Coat and a White Coat. To be frank it’s a bit on the whole which side we’re working on and legal attributions. A White Coat is an employee of the Grand Council, tasked in investigating criminal activities and crime scenes, find out any information usable or vital, and relay it back to the Grand Council’s various departments to get the job done quickly.
A Black Coat, like myself on the other hand, do the same… without being held accountable for the law. We’re allowed to rub shoulders with the most low and vile people, do a few things outside the law, so on and so forth, in order to get result that will eventually further the Grand Council. Naturally we’re not always on the same page.
“Pardon me but I am doing a bit of light work around here, I got a visit from the owner of this house. Her son is mis-” I was cut off by the sound of chiming.
“Her son was kidnapped by a demon, Black Coat. We already ran diagnostics and charms, it all points to a demonic taking. Figures it would be a demon.” The angel said with a venomous tone. I wouldn’t quiet rule it in sole demon power alone… there is always more.
“Then if you are so sure, why not let me help?” I spoke weaving magic into my words again. “After all we’re both working on the same goal here, and if you sure of your findings what’s the harm?” The angel looked nonplussed as if considering his options. “You have five minutes Black Coat.” he said before walking off.
Five minutes is all I need. I walked into the house taking a black backed blank card that was glowing faintly. I smiled as I bring it up. “Let’s see what they are hiding from me.”
