Hoyt woke up as his alarm blared on his night stand. It read 6:00 AM in big red block numbers and as he smacked the button to quiet it. The body next to him in bed gave a faint murmur and fell back to sleep as he got up and went to the bathroom. The lights flared as he stepped into the room and took a quick look in the mirror. He needed to shave and a haircut wouldn’t be a bad idea but he’d figure that out later.
The man brushed his teeth in the shower when his phone started vibrating on the sink counter. He finished quickly and toweled himself off as he grabbed the electronic and pushed the screen where the word ‘Received’ was blinking. A potential target had been found.
Hoyt dropped his toothbrush in the cup by the sink and quickly walked back into his bedroom and opened the closet. Black suits lined one side of the enclave and he grabbed on and pulled it on. The material fit nicely, contouring to his body. The smell of coffee wafted its way into the room as he put on a watch that also had the news about the potential target flashing on its face.
Trying not to scuff his shoes, Hoyt walked to the kitchen and grabbed his travel mug, filling it nearly to the brim with the black caffeine. Before the clock hit 6:15, the man was out the door and in his car, driving to the city and wondering what the day held.
Traffic was starting to pick up as he made the twenty minute drive. Cars and semi’s joined the fray on the highway as people drove to and from work. Car horns blared and people swerved trying to get to their destination in the fastest way possible. Hoyt sat behind his wheel calmly, feeling the pressure of the cars around him but pushing them away when they got too close. His exit promptly found him and he joined the line of cars going in the same direction. Looking up and ahead, Hoyt could see the buildings that adorned the city and his destination.
The streets were beginning to fill with people but the parking garage was only beginning to have occupants. After paying and parking, Hoyt walked to the sidewalk where he was joined by a similarly dressed man.
“Kind of early for a call in.” The man said, adjusting his suit coat, revealing a watch on his wrist identical to the one Hoyt wore.
“There’s no time frame to bring people in.” Hoyt responded staring ahead and feeling a sense of expanding in his mind. “Let’s just hope they aren’t too violent this time.”
The two men walked down the sidewalk and into a bank. They nodded at the security guard and headed to the elevators. The man with Hoyt pushed the up button and they got into the small moving room as three others joined them, all dressed similarly. No one talked as floors two, seven, and twelve were pushed followed by the emergency button. Instead of going up, the elevator started to descend down into the ground. After a couple seconds, the doors opened revealing a finely furnished waiting rooms of sorts where a receptionist sat behind a desk.
“Coffees ready if you would like some.” The receptionist said without looking up. He was writing something down while listening to someone talk through his earpiece. The small crowd walked across the lobby floor and walked through a door. Desks filled this room with people loitering about either working or talking in hushed tones. Hoyt had gotten used to the secretive vibe that the company fostered. Their business was their own and each agents business was his or her own. The less everyone knew about each other, the better.
Hoyt and the man who had joined him outside made their way to a conference room where a projection of a young Japanese boy filled a wall. Director Lamsen stood at the front of the room as agents sat silently waiting for her to begin.
“We’ve got eyes on the Nakayama family.” Lamsen began as pictures of the little boy flitted across the screen accompanied by a woman Hoyt guessed was his mother.
“As you know Mr. Nakayama has an interesting ability and it would appear that his grandson has inherited the gene. Being so young, we can assume he has little control over his power which is why he needs to be brought in as soon as possible. We can’t let another incident like Salt Lake come to pass.” She paused, letting her words sink in as the memory of the catastrophe an unchecked ability from a child could cause bloomed in each person’s mind.
“Our intel tells us that the child and his mother will be at Washington Park this morning. Keep it quick and clean and keep your guard up. What we know of the child’s ability is being sent to each of you. Read up and head out.”
Watches vibrated around the room as the data was transferred and received. Hoyt glanced down and saw the words invisible manipulation and felt a tug in his gut. He looked up into the eyes of Director Lamsen who nodded at him, confirming his feeling. This child was like him.
The room emptied as the agents made their way to their vehicles. By the time they got outside, Hoyt could tell something wasn’t right. The air felt weird, like their was an over abudance and then not enough. A total of four cars were loaded up as the agents drove towards the park and to the little boy they sought. As they drove, the trees around them bent under a rush of wind and Hoyt had the uneasy feeling that maybe the boy wasn’t like him. Similar, yes, but not the same.
An alert swept through the car, as watches vibrated saying the boy and his mother were on the move in a car. The agents veered through traffic until said car was in their sights. Without waiting for a cue, Hoyt took action. He looked at the car and captured it in his mind. It seemed to hop a little as it sat motionless in the street. Agents rushed from their vehicles and began to circle the automobile. Hoyt felt every part of the car in his mind and found the drivers side door, which he easily pulled from the rest of the machine. With little thought he flew the driver out and set him, pinned to the ground by the force of his telekinesis.
The other agents were quickly converging on the car when something Hoyt had never experienced before unfolded. The light breeze that had been flowing through the street abruptly stopped and a terrifying stillness filled the void. With no warning a blast of wind came from the car, flying the agents back and pushing them to the ground. From the car, the little boy and his mother seemed to fly hand in hand while the wind blew down on the black suited men and women. Their bodies felt as if they were going to be crushed under the force when it suddenly eased and they could stand.
Cautiously Hoyt got to his feet, breathing hard, as if he had just sprinted. The other agents were doing the same, but quickly came to and got back into their cars. They drove towards the direction of the flying boy and his mother but to soon got caught up in traffic as people had stopped to look above them at the unusual sight. A girl wearing a red baseball cap caught Hoyt’s attention because she seemed surprised but also wore a smile on her face.
The telekinetic nearly got out of the car to confront her when they started moving again, this time bullying their way down the street. Hoyt was thinking about how different the boy had been from himself. The boys power seemed chaotic, like a beast, while Hoyt’s ability was precise and specific. The last thought he had was of how dangerous such a power was, when a pulse washed over the agents and through the city.
Hoyt and his companions looked at each other in their car not sure of where they were going or what they were doing. An alert came via their watches telling them to head back to headquarters because they had lot him. Hoyt wasn’t sure who the ‘him’ was but he sat silently with the other agents as they drove through the city.
