The War of Apiary

The Mother of Nations

The Mother of Nations

Jul 04, 2017

Dr Mellifera smoothed out the rinkles in her cotton lab coat as she waited for the elevator to reach the top floor of the glass building that housed the Queens Council.

Soon the elevator slowed to a stop and the doors opened. Mellifera stepped out a hallway onto the smooth glass floor. The elevator's doors closed and started to drop.

"I guess its too late to turn back." She muttered. She walked up to the huge wooden doors that lead to the Council Room. She pursed with her hand on the wooden grain of the doors.

The big council room use to scare her when she was a little girl. She would hug her mother tight and wouldn't let go. Laminae would lough and hug her tightly back. "You shouldn't fear the world, Mellifera. It is your oyster." she would say, but of course Mellifera didn't understand at the age she was when her mother left her to fight the world by herself.

Mellifera sighed and pushed the big doors away from her to open. Her father was pacing back and forth in the big glass room.

"This has better be good, you called me away from my programming." She said with a glare.

Apise looked up at her and smiled.

"Your weapon can wait." He said, still smiling.

There was a pause, Mellifera raised an eyebrow. "Well?"

"We have news from Dr. Jones."

Dr. Mellifera sighed. "You called me up here, away from my work to have you tell me this?" She huffed. "And what about him?"

"I issued his release papers and he is soon going to travel back to Prata to hopefully bring back some live samples of the bees that are there to see how the bacteria is effecting them." Apise said, still smiling.

"And this involves me how?" She asked.

He started to pace the glass floor again.

Mellifera had a ting of fear of what her father was about to propose. She crossed her arms.

"I want you to work alongside Mr Jones to help find an antidote to the disease." He finally said.

Mellifera sighed. She had known exactly what her father was going to say.

"I don't want to work alongside him, father. He is a taker and he will expect the wrong kind of work from me. Laminae would of wanted different." She said.

Apise glared at his doughtier.

"Don't bring her into this!" He shouted.

She was taken back by surprise by her fathers outburst of anger.

"Why not!" She shouted back.

Mellifera could feel the tears welling up in her eyes and a lump in her throat.

"Why is it that you never talk about her? Every time I bring it up you get angry and irrational!" She shouted back.

"Your mother was a backwards thinking person. She disapproved of the idea of mankind and this nation moving forwards." He growled. "And you seem to be fallowing in her foot steps!" He continued.

Mellifera was surprised at this new peace of infomasion about her mother.

"All I have ever wanted to do was to make you proud. For you to say 'I am proud of you' but never I have heard you say that to me. Right through my childhood training to be where I am at now in the labs and still you don't say it!" She shouted.

He was about reply but Mellifera turned and left the council room.

Apise stood in the large empty glass room feeling trapped and beginning to doubt himself. Was all this worth it, He thought.

Mellifera pushed the down arrow for the elevator and waited until the doors opened before stepping into it and pushed for the correct floor.

After the doors closed and the elevator began to drop, she started to release her anger and frustration by hitting the see-through walls.

"Why?" She whispered. She knew crying wouldn't help her situation, it was irrational. She tidied herself up before the elevator reached her floor and when the doors opened the only thing that was noticeable was her red eyes.

Mellifera stepped out of the elevator and strode down to her lab.

Helen was leaning against the door frame talking to Lang. She looked up smiling when she heard Mellifera approaching. Her smile vanished though when she saw how red Mellifera's eyes were.

"It was nice talking to you Lang, I'll see you at dinner tomorrow." Helen said and turned her attention to Mellifera.

Lang paid his respects to Mellifera before walking back to the elevator.

Helen sighed.

"We need to get back to work." Mellifera said solemnly. She brushed by Helen and entered the lab, taking a seat by the computer screen of code.

Helen stood leaning against the door watching Mellifera.

"You all right?" She asked, moving towards her seat in front of another computer screen with code on its screen.

"Ya." Was all Mellifera could say, she didn't look up from the strings of code on her screen. The pain and sadness weighed her down.

Helen turned her attention to the screen of code in front of her.

The hours slowly crept by and before long the dinner bell rang.

Helen, glade to get up from her chare with a numb bottom stood and waited for Mellifera to save her work before leaving the lab.

They walked to the elevator in silence. A small group of scientists were waiting there already.

"Ah, Dr. Mellifera, I hear you work is coming on with great results. What do you think?" Asked a male scientists who had big round glasses and dark hair.

Mellifera smiled at hearing the inquiry.

"Its coming on good, Dr. Verachat, thank you for asking. How is your lab grown meats going?"

Dr. Verachat smiled. "Its going great, today we tested our first stakes and find that the stem cells that we harvested from rear left calve muscle is just right for the consistency we have been looking for. We hope to breed the stem cells off of the meat we grow. No more bad meat nights at the cafeteria." He said, giving a laugh.

Helen and Mellifera smiled.

"That was good news at least." Thought Mellifera.

The doors on the elevator soon opened and they all filed in. Verachat pushed buttons for the cafeteria floor and soon the elevator started to lift.

It slowed to a stop and the doors opened. More scientists filed in, making it harder for Mellifera to breath the tight space. The doors closed again and soon the elevator started to raise.

After a cramped couple of minutes the elevator slowed to a stop and the doors opened. Everyone slowly filed out into the cafeteria that was drastically filling up.

Helen took a sniff and smiled. "Mmm, coliflower and cheese soup night." She said nudging Mellifera.

"Yum." Mellifera said sarcastically. She disliked that dish the most, why? Because if there was any left over's, they would be serve it cold the next morning.

Important note from Author. "This has not been edited, it will only be edited when I finish writing it. And even then I might change the storyline a lot from what's here. I also upload one chapter every Saturday."

Inspired by the book series "Mortal Engines" by Philip Reeve.

All ideas are my own.
