The War of Apiary

The Disease of Power

The Disease of Power

Jul 04, 2017

It had been a couple of months since Mellifera's augment with her father in the council chambers. Since then she tried to drown out the anger and sorrow in her work. The program for the QC Bee was coming on nicely and Helen had been glad to see the exoskeleton of the Bee respond to the code that they both had been working on.

When the alarm rang for lunch Mellifera was sad to leave her work to go and eat lunch. She and Helen made there way towards the elevator in silence.

-

Mellifera grabbed a salad and took a seat at a table of younger scientists who were all talking about trying to program humans with a technology that the ancestors used called crisbar. She rolled her eyes at hearing the subject. Her father had placed a group of scientists to find a way of programming a living human so there wouldn't be any disobedience in ranks if war broke out with the rebellion. Crazy but possible.

Lang walked up the the table with a clipboard. "Dr. Mellifera, you father wants to see you over there." He said before going off to look for Helen.

Mellifera was shocked to hear her father was down here. He never came down here. She got up from her seat and slowly walked over to where her father was standing. It was away from everyone else, near the back exit that staff use.

Apise smiled at his daughter. She stood apposite him with a raised eyebrow.

"I think its time to tell you about your mother." He said sighing.

"I am sorry that I lost my temper when you brought her up." He continued.

She nodded.

"Come, lets go somewhere more privet." He motioned for Mellifera to fallow him into the elevator. The doors closed and the elevator launched downwards.

"Where are we going?" Mellifera asked, she stood intrigued at her fathers behavior.

'You'll see." Was all he could say.

The elevator dropped 9 floors before slowing to a gental stop. The doors opened to reveal the QC's underground car park. Mellifera was surprised at being brought here, for she hadn't been down here since her mothers disappearance. When she was 5 she would hid among'st the cars and her mother would come and find her. She also played taxi driving in some of the cars. So when her father brought her down here, it surfaced a lot of old memories that she couldn't help noticing. She stepped out of the waiting elevator and took a breath of the cool air. The car park was set under the QC head quarters but yet stood 900 feet above the city of Virtutem Spei. She ran to the big rectangle window that was carved out of the granite cliff face that looked over the big city. She took a minute adjust her surroundings.

"So what did you want to say to me? It doesn't involve Dr. Jones?" She asked still looking out of the window.

"I wanted to tell you what really happened to your mother." Apise said. He looked like as if he was fighting something inside his head. The flow of thoughts that flowed through his skull was telling him not to tell the secret he was holding for the past 15 years.

"My mother?" She said surprised.

"I told your mother my planes for the QC Nations and she didn't like the idea. She told me she rather would see the world burn before I would put my plane to use. So she feed to a small town somewhere north-west of Paris, where she was murdered by one of our agents." He continued. "She was truly the Mother of all Nations. She wanted you to have this when you turned 22, but I guess there's nothing wrong in giving it to you a little bit earlier." He passed a small package to Mellifera who took it and slowly unwrapped it.

Inside was a silver chain with a small gold pendent with a cross engraved on it.

"Murdered by an agent? What about the Rebellion?" She stammered looking at the pendent. She knew her mother was murdered, but she heard it was done by the hand of a rebel not her fathers agents.

"The rebellion isn't real. Its a make believe thing I created to control the people and help implant my plan. Before you were born, you mother agreed to me on rewriting history and producing a rebellion. It was easy, the people always feared that there was a rebellion that had branched off to America and were waiting to strike. It was simple enough just to verify there nightmares." He said laughing.

"And the murder that you constructed, how did you cover that up?" Mellifera asked amazed at hearing that there was no rebellion in all her years of hearing how evil and reading the best seller books by Mr. M. Lodivico about his encounters.

"Yes, we heard news of her wanting to start a rebellion against the QC. So I had her popped off and blamed the fake rebellion." He said sighing.

There was silence between them for a couple of minutes. The only noise that could be heard was the wind blowing across the ragged cliffs.

"What was your plane like to make her want to flee and start a rebellion!" Mellifera screamed at her startled father. He soon collected himself.

"I want to unite the Nations as one. No more votes as to who will rule, no more worrying as who will lead. I will become king, and you will become Queen when I die." He said smiling.

"I don't want to become Queen when you die! I wish you would Die!" She shouted, throwing the pendent to the ground. It broke in three on impact.

She huffed and sulked. "What about the disease, is that you as well?" She asked gasping, hopping it wasn't, but she had her fears.

He nodded.

"How! Why?" She screamed. She melted to the ground and started to cry.

He knelt down to her by the window. "That's why I need you by my side, to help build the Bee to make the world green again, to fix what I broke." He whispered in her ear.

"I need to regain the trust of the great cities of the north before uniting the many nations." He said standing back up.

A spark of hope flickered within her heart. Maybe if she helped her father, he might say that he was proud to have her as his doughtier.

"Fine." She whispered. "I will help you, only on one condition though." She said.

"Anything." Apise said smiling.

"I want to work by myself with Helen. No Jones or anything." She said. She would make him proud without the help of a greedy man like Jones.

"Fine." Apise smiled.

Important note from Author. "This has not been edited, it will only be edited when I finish writing it. And even then I might change the storyline a lot from what's here. I also upload one chapter every Saturday."

Inspired by the book series "Mortal Engines" by Philip Reeve.

All ideas are my own.

In 2030 the world's bee population dwindled. AFB (American foulbrood) destroyed nearly all the hives on the planet. Food shortages hit shortly after causing widespread panic as food crops died. World war three started as countries fought over the few remaining bees in a desperate attempt to thwart starvation. The great Republic of China was the first to develop the cure that finally stopping the spread of AFB, but the damage had been done. The human race had only a few survivors. After the War, the Age of Eugenics was birthed, killing thousands and important knowlage was lost during the dark age which lasted for 30 years. In 2060 the idea of a clean happy future was born. The Queen's Council was built in the hopes that peace could be maintained through the care of bees. Every child on reaching their fifth birthday would be tested, those allergic to bee venom were schooled in a variety of trades but all others learned the sacred art of bee keeping. The council maintained peace for many generations and the world prospered. Then came rumours. Rumors of another bee killer.
