Windopayne wasn’t the first story I wrote, but it was my first idea. I had been for a walk in Hampstead, London with friends and stopped off at a pub for a few drinks. Afterwards we went to a friend’s house for some food to sober up. He had these marvelous floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over his garden and in my slightly tipsy state I thought I had seen the future – windowpanes!
