I feel suddenly paralyzed. No one was ever able to catch me nevertheless unmask me. He seems shaken at first. Staring blindly at me, he lets the mask drop. Hurriedly, I pick up the mask and rush to make my escape.
I tie the torn mess around my face trying to conceal it as much as I can. I suddenly feel his grip around my hand chaining me- forbidding me to take flight.
''A huntress...'' he whispers,'' I-''
''Of course I am a huntress!'' I exclaim in exasperation trying to wedge my hand out of his iron grasp.
He lets go all of a sudden. I scurry up a tree and perch on a branch. It's time to run away
''WAIT!''
I whip my head around taken by surprise.
''I will see you again.''
''Love the confidence. You shouldn't be over-confident though. I can't stand seeing your poor heart-broken face.''
''Your sarcasm is most appreciated; I DO swear that I WILL see you again.''
''Keep telling yourself that.''
I run. I can't even make sense of my surroundings. They're all a blur- just blots of colour passing my mind. All I can see clearly is his face. I never seen anyone like him. He is beautiful and there is no denying it.
I rush up the decayed steps of my cabin. It's decayed, wooden lot, entwined with ivy climbing up it's walls. I'm surprised it survived this long, hidden in the shade of towering evergreen trees.
Night has already fallen. The cold is creeping in. It'll be even worse in winter. Grandma is asleep. I don't blame her. I gather a coarse cloth and cover her fragile bent frame. I can't eat. It's too cold and the water is freezing.
I climb into bed removing my cape and mask, which I fling down beside me. It's cold. I close my eyes, enveloping myself in impenetrable darkness. His face glimmers at the back of my mind. Snow and blood. White and red. A prince of snow and blood.
***************
I skin the rabbit carefully. Besides setting out early, I brought all my weapons with me today. I had to go back to the lake. Okay, I didn't have to but wanted to. God, only knows why.
I smile slightly to myself as I feel the sharp tip of a sword against my back.
''I don't mean to hurt you, I want to assure you that your secret is safe with me.''
''It doesn't matter anymore.''
''I want to talk to you.''
''And I don't. you really should learn how to ask questions.''
''I will talk to you.''
I hear the grating noise as he places his sword back in it's scabbard.
'' Tell me your story huntress.''
I sigh. I can't imagine why this boy is so painstakingly annoying.
''I hunt to survive. I have no option. I am only a girl. I can't work to support my grandma because I'm underage. The King goes about as if owns the land though he doesn't own all of it. We have our rights- I have rights. If I must be executed so be it. I will never back down from trying to last another day.'' I hesitatingly state.
''You do have rights.'' he says slowly,''I'm sorry I caused you so much trouble. It's just that I acted on instinct.''
'' That's okay.'' I smile, '' On the bright side-''
''I have never been matched in battle before.'' we both say simultaneously.
I laugh at his baffled face. He produces a lop sided grin.
''You might want to clean that rabbit a bit more. Here let me-''
He takes the rabbit and begins cleaning expertly. Within seconds he is done.
''Well- I have to go now.'' he says.
''Okay.''
''Promise me to meet me everyday.''
''No. once every year. Eternally- as long as long as I live.''
''Cute. I hear people have things like forever and always. Maybe eternally an be ours-''
''Shut up.'' I say running off desperately trying to hide my blush.
''UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN.''his voice calls out.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid and stupid. I must have gone mad. He can't mean what he said about eternally.
Amidst my profound embarrassment an explosion breaks out. Oh no. Grandma.
