Soon enough, the bus arrived at James’s destination, an imposing concrete fortress of an office building. James nearly lept out of his seat as the bus pulled to a stop, for he didn’t want to late for work. He rushed through the bus doors and immediately entered the Aberoth Company building, where he was employed.
Pushing through the throng of people rushing around the ground floor, James made his way to the elevator. He pressed the button to call the elevator, but the button didn’t light. He pressed it again, and again, but the button refused to light. Finally, out of sheer frustration, he reared back and punched the button as hard as he could. The button beeped, the light flickered on, and the elevator doors slid open.
James stepped out onto the fourth floor, at his job at last. He cautiously scanned the area. He had never been late before, and he expected to see his boss storm around the corner at any moment. There! His boss rounded the corner, an expression of absolute rage on his face. James braced himself for impact. He closed his eyes, clenched his fists, and began to sweat from nervousness Despite all this emotion, his boss steamed right past him. “Benson! I need that progress report on my desk, now!” He didn’t even notice James was late. No one noticed James was late. After twelve years of diligently arriving to work on time and finishing his work on time, not a soul noticed the only time James hadn’t been there.
