Tethered

Forsaken.

Forsaken.

Jul 11, 2017

Securing my satchel, I make my way to my cabin. I can't see what's happening around me. Spots of colour forms beneath my eyelids. Fear breathes down my neck making my hairs stand on an end.

''GRANDMA!''

I shout as I rush to her frail body snared within the fallen debris of the cabin. I get down on my knees and try heaving away the wood, which hardly budges.

''Drevial-''

''Don't worry. I'll get you out.''

''NO. DON'T.''

''I can't leave you like this.''

''Drevial, this wood won't budge and you know it.''

I feel tears brimming my eyes clouding them. I feel like I'm drowning. Snow begins to fall.

All I can see is her face. Wrinkled and weather beaten. The years have taken their toll on her. Her mouth presses into a firm line. Her clear grey eyes shine bravely back at me.

''Drevial,'' she starts,''You must go. Flee. Go to the silver mountain.''

''But-''

''I have no time to argue. You must LISTEN. Drevial you aren't human like myself. You are special.''

''You always told me everyone is special.''

''Not that kind of special. You are far from ordinary. You are a tethered.''

'' But you told me-''

''Yes, I know I told you that they don't exist but they DO- you're one yourself. Drevial, the darkness has awakened. We are all in danger if the tethereds don't do something. Go.''

''Grandma I-''

''God dammit Drevial, if you ever held any regard for me then GO!''

A low growl sounds from beyond the rubble. I slowly turn my head up just to be paralyzed in fear. A monster. A demon. Some doglike fiend sent from the depths of the Earth itself. A sickly decayed skin spreads over it's protruding, blackened bones. A demonic purple flame lights up it's eyes. A gruesome trail of slime froths around it's mouth. A forsaken.

''DREVIAL RUN!''

Nearly tripping over my cloak, I run. The monster gives a deathly bark and leaps over the debris. My stomach gives a lurch as I hear the sound of it devouring my grandma.

It races after me. I keep on running. Tripping over my feet and exposed roots. The snow burns my skin.

I scream as the forsaken lunges it's claws at me ripping my cloak off. It tears the cloth to shreds. I don't watch my step and plummet into snow.

The forsaken is over me, it's massive jaws trying to gnaw my face off. Thinking quickly, I reach out grabbing my bow and thrust it between the monster's jaws.

I scream again as it chews it to splinters. Slime falling from it's mouth burns my skin, literally. I feel as if I'm melting. After all my years of hunting, I can't fight this beast.

I feel my skin turn deathly cold. I feel my insides freeze up. Right in front of my eyes, I see my pale skin turn blueish with patches of ice growing on them. I reach out and grab my dagger as the forsaken finishes my bow. Ice spreads through the cold, metal blade. Taking a deep breath I lunge it into the forsaken's side.

A sticky flow of it's black blood cascades over my hand as it gives a cry of pain. Then it lunges at my face.

Another thunk. I feel the beast drop dead beside me, releasing me from it's death trap. The beast disintegrates as if it never existed at all.

I spring up to my feet. I'm a freak. Blue and frozen.

''HUNTRESS?!''

Oh no. I see him standing there, a crossbow raised in his hand. He saved me. The most annoying boy I know saved me. Now, he knows I'm a freak as well.

''I'm a freak.''I say.

I don't give him time to reply. Weary, as I am, I keep on running away.

I don't stop. I can't stop. I must reach the silver mountain. I can't let others see the freak I am.

Hunger and thirst. Bruised and battered. I might as well be dead by now. I should be dead by know.

Snow falls all around me. The snowflakes don't even feel cold anymore. I don't feel the cold.

I collapse. I clasp my ribs. I feel the stickiness of my blood seeping through my fingers falling into the white snow. Prince of Blood and Snow- like he who saved me.

My vision is failing. Everything's a blur. I feel myself being picked up.

''Glad to have another tethered join us. You have come a long way.''

I smile in relief. I made it. I close my eyes making a familiar face appear. White hair and red eyes- prince of blood and snow.
