Chapter 1
I could barely remember what she was like. I hadn't known about my powers then. If I had maybe I could've helped her....She left me with my Aunt and her daughter, Jaiden when she passed away. I can still remember the exact hospital room, the smell of various medicine, the white paint starting to peel at the corner of the ceiling, the distinct reassuring beep of the machine by my moms bed. She had gotten cancer from the multiple packs of cigarettes my dad used to smoke everyday. Sometimes she would smile at me and tell me I would be ok and to stay strong but I kne-
"Ms. Rivas." I was abruptly brought back to the task at hand and taken away from my tangled up thoughts by the teacher calling my name. Normally the heat would rush to my face, causing me to turn beet red, my rapid heartbeat would pound uncontrollably, and I would snap out of my daze, but today was different.
Today was the anniversary of the day my mom died.
Even the mere thought of this horrific day could force ever drop of happiness to flee from me, leaving me in a bitter state of mind.
"Yes, Mrs. Ronnie? What do you want from me now?" I ask in a snappy sarcastic tone. I'm definitely gonna get Detention.
"Excuse me? Agnes, you don't talk to a teacher like that."
I tune the teacher out as I try to remember bits and pieces of my mom. She had short blonde straight hair, a stark contrast from my long wavy brown hair. But I have the same blue eyes as she had. She always knew just how to cheer me up.
-I had enough of your insolence for one day! Speak to me after class" I swear this teacher hates me. This isn't the first time she has yelled at me. Why can't she just go fly away on her broomstick?
I roll my eyes. I just want the day to end because I don't think it could possibly become worse. The teacher finally resumes her lesson. I was about to start taking some notes when I notice, the creep, Allen Larson staring at me.
He's so weird. Why is he always staring at me?
I glare back at him but he doesn't that seem to get the message, because he smiles like he just won the lottery at me. I start to mouth something to him when I hear the teacher say, "Ms Rivas!" Her piercing tone slices through my thoughts yet again. My eyes dart back to her in annoyance. "Stop staring at Allen and focus for once!"
"What! No, he was staring at me!" I retort, completely flustered. Then a dark shade of pink slowly crept unto my cheek. I lost the angry shield I used to prevent myself from breaking down about my mom, it being replaced by a wave of embarrassment.
"No I wasn't" the creep claims. The little- The teacher pauses momentarily, confused and annoyed before proceeding.
Her eyes cut to Allen, but not before they gave a quick glare in my direction.
"Tell me the answer to the last problem." She asks Allen.
And of course he got it correct. "See I was paying attention." Allen smiles smugly.
'Snake!' I scream. But only inside my head.
The teacher shakes her head at me. If embarrassment could kill I would be dead.
My eyes flick to Allen who's now smirking at me. I feel myself start to shake with anger and feel sparks starting to form in my fists so I grab my phone from my backpack to check the time, in a failed attempt to distract myself. Only another few minutes until the bell rings.
I feel my powers start to act up and look down at my hands only to see a single spark dancing around in the palm of my hand. As the bell rings I quickly get up and duck behind someone before running of into the crowded hall.
I direct myself to the exit, even though it's only 5th period.
I stop myself halfway to the exit of the school and lean against a locker while pulling out my phone to text my friend, Veronica to come meet me here.
I start to get worried as the hallways start to clear and Veronica still hasn't replied.
I peer back at my phone and was about to text her again when all of a sudden I feel someone push me hard and I plummet to the ground with a loud crash. Startled, I glance to my left to see my phone shattered. I look up to see two snakes before my eyes hissing out a dry laugh.
August Haynes and Nicolette Campton.
I swiftly grab my phone and hesitantly stand up. I turn towards then door and burst through it. I feel myself start to pant and my legs start to weigh me down, but I run until I get to a vacant park, now ready to let out the sparks of lightning unabashedly.
