She bit her lip as the shuffling grew closer and a figure, outlined by the red emergency light, came into view. It was human shaped, walking as if its leg had been broken. Something triggered in her brain and she felt a calm come over her. She recognised the movement, the noise, the smell as the thing came to the door way. They had the nickname “Shufflers,”. Science fiction had called them something else. Zombie.
Katiyana took a deep breath in as the creature began to move into the room, then in one swift movement, kicked the door with her left leg, slamming it into the zombie. Ripping the door open again, she took in the crumpled creature on the opposite wall, before breaking into a run. The noise was bound to bring more of the creatures, there was never just one. How did she know that? She wasn't sure, she just knew. She needed weapons. Taking another turn, she found herself in a widened part of the hall. It wasn't empty. Her right foot on the floor, she launched a kick into the head of a nearest zombie, the rotting skull exploding apart at the force of the metal contacting with it. Ducking underneath the outstretched arms of another, she sent a punch into the side of another rotting head, not performing the same spectacular results as her metal foot had done, but strong enough to dent the creature and knock it to the ground. Dodging round two more, she shoved opened the double doors on the other side of the hall way and looked around, quickly analysing her surroundings. A small smile crept over her lips. The armoury. How convenient. Grabbing a over sized trench coat that had been left on a hook, she threw it around herself, before casting a quick glance over the guns. A big gun was impressive, but she needed something that was light and easily handled, scanning the semi-automatics, she smiled as her eyes settled on a particular weapon. She briefly wondered why these hadn't been used to get rid of the pest infestation, but cleared her mind as she picked up the mini Uzi. The weapon felt right in her hand and she shoved magazines into the large pockets of the coat, as many as she could find, before loading one into the gun itself. The armoury curved around, and she saw the next set of doors heralded a different colour of light from the dim red she was growing accustomed too. Daylight. Taking a deep breath, she broke into a run. She would not stop to fight, she would make her escape. Bursting through another set of double doors into a reception area, she almost crashed into the stinking form of a walking dead, but moved narrowly away from it. She felt her left leg compensating for her right, it almost felt to her that she could move faster. She ran flat out, jumping over fallen chairs, the world around her brightening all the time. The front of reception had been glass, but now it was just open space, looking out over a desert wasteland. Nothing had ever looked so good to Katiyana. Out there was answers. Out there was freedom. Pushing off her cyber leg, she leapt through the open space and out into the afternoon sunlight, blinking for a moment as her eyes adjusted. A movement came from her right and she ducked out of the way and broke into a run again. Before her reared an chain link fence, barbed wire sparkling dangerously a top it. If this leg could make her go faster, perhaps it had other advantages too. With out breaking pace, and gritting her teeth, Katiyana waited till right before the fence, before pushing off with all her strength with her left leg. The force blasted her into the air and over the fence, landing her in a sprawling heap in the dust. Recovering quickly, she leapt to her feet and looked back at where she had come from. It had once been a sprawling facility, but the explosion had taken most of it out, and shufflers moved around it. She had a feeling the place was no longer of use to her, it was time to find her way in this new mysterious world she had woken up to. Turning her back on the place, she sped off into the desert, trench coat flapping behind her, Uzi glinting in the sunlight.
From the roof of the facility, ice blue eyes watched the figure retreat into the distance and spoke into the mic clipped to her lapel with slightly lisping words.
“She's alive General,”
