Life is in the Little Things

For You

For You

Jul 26, 2017

She stood there on the corner, the streetlight above her, shining down on her like a spotlight.

"Hey." Turning at the sound of my voice, she smiled sadly at me.

"Do you wish you had the Triangle of Time?" It would be an odd question for some but I knew better. I knew about the world hidden within our own.

I looked at her questioningly, not understanding the object of which she spoke of. She looked away, hiding the sadness that resided in her eyes with her hair.

"It can change the hands of time. Bring her back," she explained. I nodded slowly and she smiled once more at me.

"I cannot play God here but...I..." She turned, her brown hair flowing with the wind as it passed. I followed her gaze, seeing what had suddenly caught her gaze and managed to catch mine several heartbeats later.

There, beyond the purple edges of a portal, was a hospital room. I knew it was from a different world but I paid no attention to the obvious differences of their technology and our own. Before me was my mother, nothing else mattered.

Her brown eyes were closed and her golden hair laid around her on the hospital pillow. The heart monitor next her was beeping steadily. I was going to reach forward but I turned to my friend in hesitation. The small doubt that filled my mind turned to confusion.

I cannot play God.

Finding her voice once more, she smiled joyfully at me, "i can switch places with her."

Slowly, pieces of her turned to black, like she was becoming a shadow. Mouthing unheard words, I ignored everything around me, trying desperately to reach for her, to keep her here, but she faded into the shadows beyond the streetlight.

I cannot speak her name because she no longer exists. No birth record. No death record. I always wondered what it would be like if she was here but I quickly vanish the thought before tears come.

She was a good friend. One who would go to extreme measures to help her friends.

Her last words were unexpected. Puzzlingly almost. Yet, I couldn’t help myself but to do as she had asked of me.

Smile when it rains for me.
