With the window opened wide, Tabitha sat in a chair taking in the sun’s rays. She felt her body recharging as the warmth seeped into her bones. Travelling took it out of her but the sun always brought about a type of healing. With her eyes closed, the cell phone beside her vibrated and she let out a groan. They had just gotten back, so of course the kid would have another ‘mission’ for them.
She sat in the light for a couple more seconds before picking up the phone. A new powered person in Ireland read the text. Tabitha closed her eyes again to check herself. She knew she’d be able to get there, the problem would be getting back. “Be ready in five!” She shouted down to James who she was sure had already received the news. Grabbing the jacket off the back of the chair, Tabitha walked out of the room and down the stairs where James was sitting on the couch with his head in his hands.
“You okay?”
“Just wondering what we’re about to get ourselves into. Going in blind is never fun.” He answered looking at her in concern. “You doing okay?”
“I’m good. Gonna eat an apple real fast and I should be good to go.” The woman said walking into the kitchen and grabbing a fruit from the counter. “You should probably grab a jacket, it’s bound to be chilly.” Tabitha heard James get up and the opening and closing of the small closet that held their coats. Finishing the apple to the core, she threw it in the trash by the doorway that led to the living room.
“Alright. That’s get this over with.”
“You’re sure you’re good?” James asked looking concerned.
“I’m good.” Tabitha responded grabbing the man’s arm. A warmth flooded her body and the coordinates stayed focused in her mind. Travelling was like being sent through a tube. She felt herself, and James, being pulled through an invisible channel and coming out the other side. They landed on a dirt road with a small stone wall running along one side.
Tabitha let go of James who walked and sat on the wall as she bent over and caught her breath. Transforming into light particles and back again took its toll on a person. She looked up to the sky and saw cloud coverage as far as the eye could see and wished the sun would come out. An overwhelming exhaustion was creeping up on her as her eyelids grew heavy. Tabitha felt herself sway in the road and tried to make her way to the wall. If she could just lay down for a little bit she’d be able to make the trip home after James made contact.
Sitting down, Tabitha looked at James who had a queasy expression on his face.
“Eggs don’t sit well either.” He said through clenched teeth.
“Let’s make this quick please.” Tabitha said slurring her words. “I need sleep.”
“I’m not feeling a glitch, but I’ll do some recon and see if our girl is around.” James said getting up while holding his stomach.
Tabitha watched him get up and walk about but was overcome by sleep. She woke up to the screams of people down the road. Her eyes were still heavy with sleep but she forced them open and got up. Jogging down the dirt road she saw a group of people floating in the air and a girl standing on the ground in the middle of it all clutching her head. The people were rising higher and higher into the air and their screams were getting further and further away.
Assessing the situation, Tabitha quickly zipped to each person touching them and feeling them become apart of her light speed. It happened faster than anyone could tell. At one moment the people were floating in the air and the next they were on the ground, far from the girl, with a woman collapsed on the ground next to them. James seemed to appear out of nowhere and spoke to the people.
“That’s my daughter!” A woman was saying hysterically to James. “She was playing around that Fairy Tree and now they’ve taken over her body.” She said pointing at a tree with stones circling it. He nodded at the woman as if he understood what she was saying and bent over Tabitha. She could feel his presence but her need to rest was all consuming. Her eyes wouldn’t open even if she wanted them to.
“I’ve got this.” James said to her and then she forgot who was talking to her.
Tabitha woke up in a bed and shot up. She looked around her and saw that it was still gloomy outside and rain was slowly falling from the sky. A person sat in the corner of the room on a chair and the smell of a fire hung in the air.
“James. James!” Tabitha whispered loudly across the room. The body in the chair stirred and let out a yawn.
“Oh. You’re up. Ready to go?” He asked rubbing his eyes and yawning again.
“Where are we?”
“Brynne’s house. I got her and her family to calm down and they took us in. You’ve been asleep for about five hours now.”
“Is she safe? What did you tell them?”
“She’s good. I gave her our information and gave her the rundown. She was pretty out of it, saying she had an intense migraine. The kid called and said someone was going to come and help her into her power. It would appear she’s got some gravity manipulation, which is a new one for me.”
Tabitha sat on the edge of the bed, still fighting drowsiness. “So are we done here?”
“I think so. We should probably say good bye before we leave though, and maybe exit through the front door and then travel so they don’t freak out again.”
The woman nodded and stood from the bed as James opened the door and led the way out to the family. Brynne was sitting next to a fire with a blanket on her shoulders as her mother sat nearby staring at the girl. James took charge of the conversation telling the family that they were off but that someone else was going to be stopping by soon. The family barely seemed to register what he was saying and the duo quickly got out of the house.
“Ready?” Tabitha asked grabbing James’ arm before he could respond. She just wanted home and the sunlight. They were immediately in the living room and the woman walked as quickly as she could to the backdoor and the porch that waited for her. The sun streamed down and she felt wave after wave of the light wash over her body. Tabitha hadn’t felt this drained since she had first jumped. Back then she didn’t know the extent of her power or how it worked. She just knew she could be anywhere anytime she wanted.
Those jumps had started small and gotten progressively bigger until she found herself stranded in the Canadian wilderness, exhausted and out of energy. She had stumbled upon some hikers by pure luck and fainted in front of them. They had quickly wrapped her in a sleeping bag and set up camp where she slept for an entire day. When she had come to, the hikers tried to ask her questions but they only spoke French and the conversation quickly hit a dead end. Tabitha had graciously eaten some of their dinner and thanked them profusely in English before jumping back to her bedroom where she broke down and cried. She had never been more scared in her entire life but now with the practice she had put in, and the constant jumps for missions, she was able to go a lot further and a lot more often. This day had taken it out of her though. Jumping across the country and then to the other side of the planet did that to a person though, she supposed.
The sun on her skin felt incredible and she was interrupted when James came to the back porch and handed her a glass of water.
“Do you have anymore jumps in you?” He asked drinking from his own glass. It was nearly noon and they still had targets to interact with.
“Not currently.” She said taking a long drink from her cup and setting it down. “I think I’m good to stand here for a while longer.”
“Sounds good to me.” James replied. “We can keep going tomorrow.”
