The video was point of view this time. We were watching from the eyes of something swimming through a tunnel. There were others in the water too. Shadows with jagged smiles. They floated through the water like horrific jelly fish. The point of view picked up speed. There was an opening at the end of the tunnel. The metal surrounding the view made it clear now that this wasn’t a tunnel. It was a pipe. The view came out of the pipe into a larger body of water. There were decaying bodies floating everywhere. Suspended in the dark liquid. Not falling all the way to the bottom, not floating to the top. The view avoided the bodies as it ascended to the top. It broke through out of the water. The water flowed down its view and then cleared. It was looking right at us.
Steve and I both turned at the same time. We didn’t make any sudden movements. Across from us, looking back with those puke green eyes, was one of the rotten ones.
“Please tell me you know of a way out of here,” Steve said.
I knew there was the stairwell entrance on the other side of us. Originally there was also an emergency exit down here. It would be covered by water now. Or more likely, wouldn’t exist at all anymore. That wasn’t my first concern though.
“Where’s the other one?” I asked
“The other one?”
“There’s always two.”
I heard the sound of the water behind us being disturbed. I turned. The light of the TV faintly lit the area, just enough for me to see the other rotten one. She was right behind Steve.
Steve threw an elbow back behind him. It smashed into the rotten girls face. The other rotten one came at us. He sped through the water at waist level like a shark. His inhuman speed closed the gap between us in seconds. I felt around in the water for my pipe and found it. I brought it up just as he reached me. The pipe impaled him through the neck. He kept coming at me. I tried to push him away but the water made it hard to get any force into anything. Steve was behind me having his own battle. He tried to swim away but was being pulled under by the other one.
“Steve!”
I used the metal rod to push my decaying foe to the side. I threw a haymaker at him for good measure. The squishing impact sound almost made me throw up. Pieces of his face sprayed off him and into the dark water. I turned and swam away from him to go assist Steve.
I could see the bubbles rising. He was being drowned down there. I reached down and felt the body of the other rotten one. I pulled hard and dragged her back. She turned in my hands and latched onto me. Her face was inches from mine. Black sludge dripped out of her mouth onto my skin and began burning me. My skin sizzled and blistered. She make a hacking sound. She was about to spit the acid muck directly in my face. The pipe that pierced through her mouth from behind put an end to that though. Steve threw her to the side with the pole still stabbed through her skull.
“Let’s go! It’s clear!”
Steve pointed to the stairwell entrance. He was right. We had a small window to get there. We both started wading through the water as fast as we could. I heard the pipes being pulled from flesh. They were coming for us, and they were pissed. I didn’t look back. I could hear the shark like sound of their pursuit. We reached the steps to the platform. I got there first and helped him out of the water. We both took one look towards the water. They weren’t in it anymore. They were gone.
“Where’d they…”
“Don’t care. Let’s go.” I said.
As we turned to go through the door they both burst out of the water. A fountain of sludge was following them. I opened the door. Steve got through and we both slammed it shut and put our weight against it. They smashed against door forcing us back partially. Our feet slid but we were able to brace ourselves again and push the door all the way closed. The other side of the door goes quiet. We don’t let up.
“How long are we going to hold this thing for?” Steve asked.
“Until we know they are gone. Turning your back in this place doesn’t end well. Ever.”
“I’m tired. I just want this all to end. What are we even fighting for? This place isn’t going to let us go.”
I didn’t have time to tell him not to give up. His hand was pushing against the door on the window in the door. Black sludge broke through it and wrapped around his hand. Then it moved up his arm. He screamed. I pulled him back. We broke free from the rotten tentacle. His arm was mangled. His screams turned to shocked whimpers. His body was trembling. I helped him up the stairs and into level one. He was losing consciousness. We made it down the hall, almost to the security office. He passed out right in front of it. I was able to drag him the rest of the way in and closed the door behind us. His arm was oozing. His flesh was beginning to come off. He wouldn’t last long. I pulled out the first aid kit from the desk and applied gauze and bandages to his arm. I knew it wouldn’t do any good. I had to try though. I didn’t know what else to do. One by one the security camera feeds began to turn to static. Then they all came to life at once. They were showing us running through the rehab center. There was music playing over the video. It was a montage of the hell we had been going through. It showed us watching the thing in the wheelchair come towards us. It showed Steve’s arm get taken by the rotten ones. Then it cut to the second floor. It showed room 27. The thing in the wheel chair was sitting there. A message appeared on the screen.
“You Have Been Doing So Well! I Think You May Just Be A Star In The Making! But First We Have To See If You Can Handle The Fandom Of Being In The Spotlight! Your Fans Are Coming!”
The screen changed to the halls of the second floor. Sheet covered ghouls were coming out of every room. It showed the elevator. It was filled with ghouls also. It showed the ghouls marching down the stairwells. Both the north and the south. They were all coming to the first floor. They were all coming for us.
