God I seriously needed to invest in a vehicle, the musky air makes me chilled to the bone and why does everything seem so far away when you walk alone in the dark. I have some Nirvana playing through my ear buds; I remember when I first listened to their album Nevermind. The music made my art ecstatic, and so expressive, it had grunge to it.
Right now it's Lithium that was putting me in the mood for suicide for what I was about to do and how Nina was going to kill me when she finally finds out what I'm going to do with this microchip.
Entering the building, the hospital entrance was scattered with nurses almost like little fire ants, sick people sitting in chairs impatiently waiting to be called on. I wasn't a big fan of hospitals, quite frankly I think everyone is and it isn't a happy place either brings up to many bad memories for me.
Approaching the front desk I stare down at the women, her hair fumbled to the side stray hairs laced everywhere. Her fingers rambling on the keyboard, "Excuse me." I say, interrupting her mid type.
"Yes," she rolls her eyes at me sticking the pen in her hair. "How can I help you?" Her gum nearly rolling out of her mouth.
I lean over the counter. "I'm looking for Keegan Murray; he was brought here later this evening." I say with a smile, hoping to coax the nurse.
"I'm sorry," she says sounding like a monotone robot, "We can only allow family members at this moment, visiting hours are over." She moves her eyes back to the computer screen.
"Well could you make sure to give this to him?" I ask the nurse, handing her the chip that was placed in a ziplock bag.
She looks at me and nods her head, dismissing me to leave but I couldn't bring myself to. Maybe it was because if I do I'm going to have to tell Nina that I left the microchip to Keegan? She's going to want to kill me before I even turn the ripe age of twenty one.
I honestly don't even want to go home right now; I'll just wait outside on this bench at the hospital and hopefully freeze to death because it seems to be the best option for my choosing.
And what more can happen? I mean tonight has been a record of nights and I just can't seem to understand how I'm targeted like a damn dart board.
"Hello?" I turn to see Keegan's mom glaring at me with a smoke in her hand and sitting down right beside me. She looks even worse then when she was getting interviewed.
"Hi, ruff day?" I stick my hand out for her to shake, she returns with a shake and a smile.
"You can say that again." She smiles, flicking her blonde hair behind her.
I give a weary smile, "Yeah, sorry about that your son. No one deserves that." I did feel generally sorry.
"It's quite okay," She crosses her legs and flicks at her cigarette, "Maybe it'll smarten him up and make him come back home."
I would like to say I was shocked, but that guy was a douche canoe. "Oh, well I'm sorry for that?" I shrugged my shoulders.
He gives off a relaxing laugh. "It's okay I know my son doesn't do well with interaction." She pats me on the shoulder. "Basketball has been his whole life and his fathers too. No time for friends." She waves her hand around leaning forward.
"Well I wouldn't have guessed that." I say with a laugh, and she laughs as well.
"You know I haven't had a decent laugh in a while." Her breath smelling of nicotine.
"No problem." I stand up. "I should probably get going, I got school tomorrow." I smile. "It was nice to meet you Mrs. Murray."
"I hope we met again Josephine." She gets up and shakes my hand. "You have a good night."
"You as well." I say before walking back into the rain. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
"You did what?" Nina shouts at me, pacing the floor nearly making in prints on the hard wood. Did I forget to mention I told her what had happened last night? "Josephine Amber Kendall, How could you do this to me?"
I'm standing by the door, canvas in one arm and art supplies in another and a coffee in the other hand. "Nina, we should get going we are both going to be late for class."
She stops in her path of self-destruction, giving me the oh so famous stink eye. "Don't you dare Nina me? What am I supposed to tell my boss?" She points her finger to me. "Actually what are you going to tell my boss?" She smirks, knowing that she has the upper hand.
I purse my lips, allowing my eyes to roll to the back of my head. "Fine I'll go on my lunch, now can we get going? Mrs. Stang, will be pissed if I show up late again." Mrs. Stang is one of the toughest art teachers in the state.
"Fine," She says almost irritated with me and I guess that's sort of understandable.
Closing the door behind I failed to notice a bunch of boxes, in the hall and almost fell over because one of them. I bang on their door, "Clean up your boxes!" I holler at the door.
The only good thing about this apartment was how close to the school it is, and maybe the fact that the art studio was a ten minute walk. But with Nina still being upset with me, it was the longest walk I've ever had to endure and class couldn't be close enough. Nina didn't even say anything before she went into her literature class.
I disliked this day this part of the day, drawing was never my strong suit especially faces, the always looks like a drunk horse. Literally the bane of my existence and of course Mrs. Stang was the teacher. I enter the class room sitting my canvas against the wall and my art supplies along the table, sitting down on the end while the other classmates full in their seats, whispers revolving around the room.
I look up to see Nancy, a classmate her eyes gazing at me. "Can I help you Nancy?" I demanded.
She snickers, her country accent stretching a mild while. "Your silly Joe," she pats my shoulder. "We all know about what happened last night."
I look at her puzzled. "Nancy you're going to have to be clearer on that." Taking a sip of my coffee.
She giggles yet again, "Well you know how Nathan hit Keegan? Well the rumor going around is he did it because you and Keegan are an item."
I spat out my coffee all over my self. "Wait, what?" A rumors spread about me and my favorite shirt destroyed by the only thing I love in my life, why is this happening to me.
Nancy's country twain spoke, "Oh honey, don't act so shocked." She snickers. "Keegan is hot and well damn who wouldn't go there." She flips her hair over her shoulder, blushing and continues drawing.
The rest of class just fueled my anger towards, everything and I still had to deal with Nina's work at lunch. Mrs. Stang was pleasant this morning which came to a surprise, maybe she finally got laid. She even allowed us to leave early for once, which is definitely telling me she got laid.
Nina's work space was directly down the hall and past the gymnasium; working for the news at the university was a big deal and walking in there like walking into a frat party with no intention to party. Walking down the hall, I noticed Nathan was playing in the gym. I stopped and started, how could he do something like that? Hurt someone as badly as he did.
I wanted to say something to so badly but I knew I didn't have the time. So I continued along my way without noticing that Nathan saw me. "Joe, wait up!" I heard are booming voice and his feet heavy hitting the ground.
Great, "Nathan, I don't have time." I continue marching along the hallway.
"You don't have time for me? Yet you have time to go fuck Keegan?" His comment stopped me in my path, he had no right to go there he cheated on me; he was the one who fucked around with other women. "What happened to you?"
I spun around my heart almost jumping out of my chest for how badly I wanted to slap him, I strutted towards him. My hands forming the position just before, cold hands grabbed my shoulder.
Turning to look, it was Nina holding my shoulders pulling me away from Nathan. "Come on Joe, he isn't worth your time." She mumbles to me.
Nathan starts laughing. "Don't you mean our time Nina?" He chuckles.
"Shove it up your ass Nathan!" She hollers back at him.
I turn back to her. "What's he talking about Nina?" I asked her, confused as hell to what he was talking about.
"Nothing, I heard about the rumors and confronted him about it. That's all Joe." She sustains walking down the hall with me heading towards the newsroom.
"Thanks for helping me out of there Nina, but you should've allowed me to have one slap in." I say with a giggle, causing her to smile.
"Hurry up you boob, my boss is waiting." She nudges me with a smile.
She enters the room, allowing me to follow her and not get lost in the confusion of the overcrowded room. Papers placed everywhere, voices mumbled together causing a buzz you wouldn't want to hear, we cut in between desk before we reach her boss office.
"Good luck!" Nina utters before shoving me into the room, I look back at her in horror. I look around the room, and see her boss staring at me. She was very elegant in the way she looked, her raven hair dropped into a low topknot. Her glasses sat firmly on her nose and I just wasn't expecting her to be a her.
"Sit. I'm Miss. Reia." She speaks her voice making me want to crouch behind the chair more than sit in it, she turned to stare at me.
Silence grew over, and I couldn't take it. "I'm so sorry, I didn't want to have someone's career been on public viewing and I'll do anything to not be in trouble again or for Nina to get fired!" I sound like the most spoiled rich kid in the world.
"You know," her raspy voice indicates "Joey is it?" I cringe at that name.
"It's Joe," I pronounce.
"Huh, a male name how fitting." Her voice coming of brassy.
"It's short for Josephine." I start twiddling my thumbs, like a nervous wreck.
She sets her arms on the desk, hitting her finger nails against the desk. "We aren't here to talk about names Joey."
"It's Joe." I whisper, hopefully looking down and not to see her face.
She sits back, her chair making the most piercing noise. "Nina told me you are an art student. Correct?"
I nod me head in approval, not wanting to speak. Her eyes scared me enough as it is.
"Well we have a proposition for you," She gets up from her chair and walks to the front of the desk leaning against it. "You are going to become our new videographer." She folds her arms in front of her, "You start tomorrow at lunch."
I look up at her, presenting a smile. "Thanks ma'am." I say before bolting out of the door.
Nina sat outside chewing her thumb nail. "How'd it go?"
"Well," I utter. "I guess I'm the new videographer!"
