Chapter 10:"I shut my mouth like a penguin."
It's really fascinating how we imagine the most important moments in our life to be perfect- something out of a fairytale. But, it's those small moments that make our life more meaningful. Those small moments being when someone remembers small little details about you; when someone gets you your favorite kind of chocolate, when someone makes you laugh purposefully, when they unknowingly hold your hand while walking, intertwines their fingers with yours, looks lovingly at you......
Alright, I need to focus on what's going on right now. I can't get lost in my thoughts in this moment at least. How can I even get distracted now? Just how?
Okay, focus Maeve. You are getting distracted again.
I reminded myself again as I stared into Ace's eyes. They were such a beautiful shade of brown. I could get lost just looking into those all day long. I sighed and rested my chin on my left hand.
"Maeve? “Ace spoke breaking my train of thoughts.
"Yes?" I perked up.
"I asked if you wanted to visit the fair next week?" he asks shyly.
"Ummm......"
"I mean, we won't go if you don't want to." He mumbles out quickly.
"I'd love to go." I smile as I say.
"Really?" he looks so relieved that it's cute.
"Yes. I won't mind." I shake my head.
"Great. I'll pick you up at seven." he smiles widely. I smile at him while nodding my head.
So, everyone must be thinking what is going on?
Let's go back to Monday after my awful encounter with Alastair, I met Ace. The charming guy had slowly made his way into my life. The next day, he had found me in my special spot in the library and blabbered the whole time. The librarian had given us numerous warnings to keep it down. But,Ace being notorious completely ignored the lady and had made me laugh so hard that everyone stared at us. Thus, we were thrown out of the library.
Then, to apologize for his mistake Ace had bought me an ice-cream and we strolled through the campus just talking. He walked me back to the dorm that night and bid goodbye.
The rest of the week passed by the same, as Ace would turn up unexpectedly at random places and spend some time with me-talking and mostly making me laugh.
I did bump into Alastair many times, but I had been with Ace at that moment and he had left grunting. Ace just said he was being an asshole. I knew Alastair was an asshole most of the time but, he was a nice person too. Ace and Alastair definitely had some issues between them. But, no one ever mentioned it. I had asked even Shantell about it, but she just shrugged it off.
Ace asked me out on a date on Thursday. It was completely out of the blue and I had been speechless. After nearly five minutes of me being speechless, Ace had given up. But, I came back to my senses and quickly said yes. He looked overjoyed and almost pulled me in a hug. Almost being a keyword.
Our date was supposed to be in a high-end five-star restaurant according to Ace, but I had convinced him to change the place to a cheaper restaurant. It had been quite a conversation. Ace was hell bent on taking us to the five-star restaurant.
Now, we were sitting in a corner table in McDonald's. This showed how much I knew how to win an argument.
As I looked around the place, I thought I saw Jayden standing on the opposite side. But, I quickly dismissed the thought as Shantell and Jayden were supposed to be at his place. I glanced over once again only to find someone else there.
"What's wrong?" Ace asked placing his hand over my right hand.
"Nothing. I just thought I saw someone." I shook my head.
"Alright. I'm going to-"just as Ace spoke he was cut off by another one-that being Alastair's.
"Well, aren't the two love birds looking lovely?" Alastair smirked down on us. He had Chase and a new girl with him. Chase just waved at me softly with a smile. I smiled back.
The girl just scowled at me. Woah, what did I do to her? Every girl I met with Alastair seemed to hate me.
"Barton." Ace groaned at Alastair.
"Jackson." he groaned back.
The tension was quite noticeable between them, so I decided to break it, “What are you doing here, Alastair?"
"Oh, me? I'm just here to have some lovely food along with some friends." He acted all innocent.
"Are you on a date, Maeve? “Chase interrupted.
Everyone grew silent at this. Alastair's and Chase's expression were curious, while the girl still had the scowl on. Ace smiled smugly at him.
"Yes, we very much are on a date." Ace answered for me.
I just nodded in answer too afraid to see the reaction of Alastair. I shouldn't feel like this, but I still was.
Alastair's expression changed from curious to furious in seconds. He scoffed at his answer.
"You call this a date? At a fast food restaurant? I didn't think your manners were this bad, Jackson."
"Alastair, it wasn't his-"I started but Alastair motioned me with his hands to stop. I shut my mouth like a penguin.
"Don't explain. I don't need you to defend him." he shook his head.
Ace instantly stood up and got in a defensive mode. Alastair was just quick as much. Both were standing face to face. Well,Ace was a bit shorter than Alastair but, you understand what I mean to say.
Everyone was now looking at us-majorly expecting a fight. I mean who wouldn't want to see a fight between two hot Greek Gods? Definitely not me.
Shit, I was getting distracted again. I had to focus.
I stood up and went to stand between them. They were both staring with so much hatred in their eyes that it was hurting to look at them. I created more space between them by pushing them away from each other.
"Stop. Come on, you two. No need to create a scene." I tried calming them down.
I motioned Chase to take Alastair away from here and started pulling him away when Alastair spoke, “Stay away from him, Mae. He's not a good person. Please, it's for your own good." and he took off.
"Ignore him. Let's go." I gathered my stuff and pulled Ace by his arm towards the exit.
As we sat in the car, Alastair's voice rang in the back of my head-Stay away from him, Mae. He's not a good person. Please, it's for your own good. I wondered what made Alastair say that. Ace acted nice towards me. The thought confused me.
My life had more drama than a Spanish daily soap now.
