I woke up to my own scream and found Alissa with my mom staring at me frightened.
"Is that a bite?" Alissa whispered.
"It wasn't there a minute ago. How is this possible?" she exclaimed looking around the ambulance that we were currently in. They had me strapped down to the stretcher and were giving me oxygen through tubes in my nose.
This seemed so silly because how would a dream stop me from breathing. I swear hospital's are so overly cliche and dramatic. I tried to remember what happened but everything seemed a bit blurry to me. I remember getting to school this morning and doing the usual. I remember being asked out by James but everything seemed shaky after that.
"Let me take a look. Please get back ladies," said a calm reassuring male voice. His strangely cold fingers pressed the sore spot on my neck. I almost hissed at the contact. Once he pressed the spot I felt warm blood drip down my neck. Memories started to flow through my mind. Things that I thought were a dream just seemed too real.
I was scared. I felt as if everything was just crashing down on me. Nixon wasn't a figment of my imagination. What kind of sadistic person who imagine this? I don't think I was ever imagining it. I had proof now, the bite and my swollen lips from our first real kiss. But how? It all happened while I was asleep. And he bit me just like a vampire or something!
My mom gripped my arm, "Doctor are we at the hospital yet? She's shaking." I hadn't realized that my body was quivering. When I peered over at Alissa she seemed dazed and lost in thought.
The doctor brought a syringe close to my arm, "Okay we're going to put her to sleep just so that we can get her under control."
"NO!" I yelled jumping and startling everyone. I even heard the driver jump up.
Alissa grabbed a hold of me and steadied me so that the stretcher would become balanced again, "Bree what happened back there in the car?"
I shook my head and gave her a look before saying, "I don't know."
She knew that this meant I would have to tell her later. Her eyes opened wide and she whispered, "Nixon?" I gave her a slight nod and she slipped back into her seat with wide eyes.
We pulled up to the hospital in the ambulance and they seemed it silly to use the stretcher since I was awake so I just got down and walked in. They ran all sorts of tests on me to see if I was a drug user or depressed. They said that the attack was caused by a nightmare that had scared me. If only they knew.
Sitting on the white hospital bed I swung my legs impatiently. The doctor seemed to be talking with my mom and I couldn't make out what they were saying. Minutes later they came back in the room. Alissa had gone down to the break room to get some doughnuts.
The doctor walked up to me with his clipboard of notes, "Hello Aubrey. We've decided to put you on some anti-depressants and also Prazosin for the nightmares. This should keep your sleep dreamless and calm. We would also like to monitor the situation so if you get any more nightmares, don't hesitate to call."
"Thank you Mr.?" I asked looking up at his pale face. He seemed simply too young to be a doctor and he was surprisingly good looking. He had light brown hair and bright blue eyes. The paleness of his skin eerily reminded of my dreams so I stopped looking at him.
He let out a light chuckle, "Mr. Casanova,"
I simply nodded and Alissa came back with a box of doughnuts. She seemed to be in deep thought and then she just couldn't help but stare at Mr. Casanova. Did I have to remind her about her boyfriend? He didn't seem to notice as he strutted right passed her and out the room.
"Its okay to breathe Liss," I said hopping down from the hospital bed. I'm 5'5 so the bed was a bit tall. She finally regained herself and came over to help me gathering my bag from the table.
My mom came over to my side, "I called your father and he said that he wont be coming tonight. He wishes you the best. So when you girls are done come downstairs and meet me," she gave me a sad smile and walked out of the room. I almost wished that he would be coming. Almost.
I was heading for the door when I heard Alissa's voice, "So are we just gonna act like your psycho dream boyfriend didn't attack you?"
I could hear the sarcasm in her voice, "To my mom, yes. But we can tell Chloe and see how it goes from there," I said nudging her towards the door. My mom was waiting in the lobby as she promised and she drove me and Alissa back to my house. Alissa had told her mom to come pick up her truck from the hospital since I had passed out for about 30 mins. That sounded crazy cause I hadn't been with Nixon for that long. I pulled out my phone when we reached my house and texted Chloe took come over. She lived 5 minutes away so it wouldn't take long.
My mom went straight into the kitchen and mumbled something about needing to make dinner.
"Uhm me and Liss are going up. Can you tell Chloe to come up when she gets here?" I told her as we walked past. She nodded back in response and began to season some shrimp in a bowl. When we reached my room I threw my bag on the floor and fell to my bed with a whoosh. Alissa closed the door and stood at me like I was a crazy person.
She pointed at my neck, "So I guess you and Nixon had... fun?"
I lifted my head and covered my eyes in shame, "I think Nixon might be a vampire."
She came and sat my me, "Like Twilight or The Vampire Diaries?"
I shrugged, "Maybe a bit of both. He is ridiculously hot and possessive but that scares me. I also guess that he might not just be my imagination. I don't think I could ever come up with this type of shit by myself."
When I was done speaking Chloe opened the door and came in closing it shut. She gauged our expressions and furrowed her brows. Her red hair was flowing over her shoulders and she had on a Pink sweatsuit.
She sat down on the bed with us, "Guys whats going on?"
"Bree is being tormented by her vampire dream boyfriend," Alissa said with a shaky laugh.
"I'm being serious. Your text sounded urgent Bree, whats wrong?"
I looked up at her and sighed, "Alissa's right. The dreams I've been having of that guy Nixon. They're real I don't know how but they are. Look," I said pointing at the still sore bite mark on my neck. Her eyes widened as she looked it over. I could tell that she was struggling to believe it herself.
"We need to tell someone about this! What if he hurts you again or someone else?" Chloe exclaimed looking frightened, "First he put you in a sleep like coma and I didn't believe you. But I doubt that you could actually bite your own neck."
I rolled my eyes, "I cant tell anybody. They'll just lock me up in a psych ward and then I'll be some kind of crazy dream girl for like ever."
Alissa looked at me puzzled, "He's never hurt you before so why now?"
"Some how he knew about me going to the Fall Festival with James and he got so angry. I've never seen him so angry or act that way like ever. He chased me down and even promised to kill James."
At the last part Alissa and Chloe looked at each other then back at me. Chloe spoke up first, "Do you think that he could actually do that?"
I shook my head, "I don't know anymore. Some how he bruised me in my dream who knows what he could do in real life."
Alissa sighed, "Then the only solution is that you stay awake."
"She can't stay awake forever Liss," argued Chloe. She was right. I would eventually have to go to sleep and most likely see the man I had been spending time with for the past 3 months in my dream.
"I have to talk to him," I said in a small voice.
"What if he doesn't let you wake up? What if you never wake up?" Alissa argued giving me a hard look.
"He wouldn't do that," I shook my head. "I know that he loves me."
Chloe got up from the bed and walked over to the door, "THIS IS SERIOUS. He threatened to kill someone for you and you call it love? He FREAKING BIT YOU. I can't believe you're this delusional," she opened the door and left slamming it shut.
Alissa and I were both stunned by the turn of events. I never did expect Chloe to understand, I just thought that she wouldn't be as worried or upset. But she had every right to be. She helped set me up with James and now he was probably in danger because of me.
"She didn't have to say it like that," Alissa said holding my hand for comfort. It felt as though she was trying to comfort me more than herself.
"But she's right. I'm delusional as fuck," I said letting a tear slip down my cheek.
She wiped away my tears, "No you're not. If some sexy dream vampire came and talked to me or even looked at me I'd be head over heels too."
"Even if his name was Richard or Nixon?"
She giggled and we both laughed together, "Especially then."
