“Ignore him , look at that. The girl behind you.” I turn to look at the girl behind me.
“Sophie , I think she’s not a girl.” I whisper to her after looking at the short-haired bushy eye browed fat girl. She resembled a male baboon waiting to be fed. Somewhat our age. Nineteen to twenty I guess?
“Shut up Ava , keep looking at her, just look at the way shes eating.” Sophie hushes.
The fat girl grabs the burger in her hand and throws it inside her big wide open mouth. In one gulp , its gone. The fat girl then stands up as the waiter smiles and shows her the way out. Leading her all the way to the café door.
“Sophie , you have to be honest.” I warn Sophie with a serious look on my face.
“mm-hmm?” she replies.
“Does she look better than me?” I ask. Sophie bursts out in a laugher. Patting her leg and wrapping her hands around her stomach , her eyebrows lowered and her eyes filled with tears.
“are you SERIOUS?! Look at her!” Sophie points at her hanged down swinging fat belly.
“I know righ-!”
“Of course she’s better!” Sophie continues.
“you’re dea-“ I try to say.
“Dead serious.” She says and guffaws again.
The waiter then brings us our order. “Oh by the way , can I ask your name?” Sophie asks the waiter who was walking away. He turns and replies “Ash” with a smile.
My color turns white and my body turns pale. They did have similarities but the name , why is the name same?
“Oh! What a coincidence! My boyfriend’s name is Ash too!” Sophie jumps up with surprise. He smiles without saying anything and leaves.
“Hey everyone! The whispering peaks is getting cut! They’re planning to build a restaurant in place of it!” a man , who always collects the stories from around the city and tells them , comes in shouting.
“Whispering peaks? Isn’t that where your family is buried?” Sophie asks.
“Y-yeah it is , what are we going to do?” I ask.
“Let’s go see what’s happening.” Sophie stands up putting down the money on the table.
Both of us reach the whispering peaks. They had already shoveled up the graves and were moving them.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” I ran to the crowd of workers shouting.
My heart was melting , it was in pain.
“What are you trying to do , you knuckleheads! It’s her family’s graves.” Sophie rages in shouting.
“We can’t control this , these are the orders of the government and we cant do anything about this.” The workers reply taking the coffins away.
“Stop it..stop taking them away-stop snatching away my FAMILY FROM ME!” I shout.
An old woman walks up to me “Stop this nonsense , the dead stay dead , they don’t see your tears. They don’t feel , they don’t talk , what good would they do lying idly like that? It’s better to use that space for people who still have a family! And who are breathing!”
“Bu-but they are my family , my precious brother , my mother and my father , I can’t just let them go!” I cry.
“If you don’t let them go , after some years , they’ll leave themselves. My husband died 70 years ago , they don’t even find his body. What should I do? Shovel up the whole mountain? This is where they actually are.” Pointing to my heart she says. “if you keep them here , they’ll never leave.” She smiles and says , I notice her eyes , wet and teary. She was also sad from the fact that whispering peaks was getting abolished.
“Well Hello young lady! Are you sad?” a person approaches me with a smile.
I look at him , trying to figure out what he wants.
“Don’t worry , I have a message for you.
~Warriors die young , your parents are one of them~”
Every single word gets stabbed into my heart like a knife , I’ve heard this somewhere before ,
~Warriors die young , your parents are one of them. They protected you with whatever they had , and died as proud parents. Your brother is not a Warrior though , he-
I can’t remember what he said next. Who was it? Who told me this? I tried remembering as the person starts walking away after patting me on my shoulder expressing his consolidation.
“Wait! Wait! Listen to me! Who asked you to convey this? Wh-“ the person had disappeared.
