’I woke up not in a forest this time, but there was a fire. My body felt mostly healed and I wasn’t sure how many days it had been. My eyes shot open to the view of many beautiful glowing stars. I had never seen so many gathered in clusters at a time before, the sky was so big and open.
The cool wind hit my tired body as I sorely stood up. I looked around seeing there was no one around but a silver wolf laying on the other side of the warm fire pit. I blinked smoke out of my trying to look at them better. The wolf’s head sat up curiosiously looking at me.
“Are you warm enough?” Said Sarah’s voice speaking through the wolf’s mouth. I stared almost nervous to say anything so she went on in a more friendly voice; “My name is Sarah, were alone right now the others went to savage for food or anything particularly.”
“Where are me?” I asked rubbing my temples. I figured by the tone of her voice she was okay to speak with.
“We are in the plains of Gauloon. It is a long stretched meadow before two tall mountain ranges blocking the human society with- other societies. Of course several beings live on this side of the world more ancient nations keep their distance.” Sarah explained, she stood up stretching like a cat.
“Why do you go into detail of where we are?” I asked looking around, we were truly alone in a vast land of grass, although I saw one large oak tree not too far.
“Because we can tell how lost you are about the world. David, the beta of this pack told us to be very descriptive.” Sarah said getting a little softer, “It’s the nicest thing we can do, to make you feel comfortable.”
I looked away feeling an impulse of anger. I knew if I ran she would be able to catch me, as much as I would try my whole body was still healing. “Well Thanks….I guess….well I have one more question when am I going to die?”
Sarah didn’t even open her mouth. She looked up at the stars and closed her eyes as if she heard the most heart wrenching thing. “What’s your name?” She asked.
“It doesn’t matter anymore.” I said, feeling very drained she never answered my question. I had a feeling she didn’t think I had very long. “I’ll be dead soon.”
“Please tell me, you must feel so lonely and scared. It’s best if you know someone knew your name before….before well….anything that happens.”
I muttered my name and her long ears perked up in interest as if she was trying her best to listen. I spoke a little louder feeling confronted. “My name is Hannah.”
Sarah’s eyes lit up to my name. “Your name is Hannah?”
I nodded running through my hair trying to pull out the leaves and twigs in it. I bet I looked like a mess. “Yeah, pretty plain.”
Sarah shook her head. “No, no, no not at all. It is very beautiful.”
I smiled at her, smiling for the first time what seemed forever. “Thanks, Sarah, you name suites you. It means princess right?”
“Yeah.” She said.
“Well you certainly look like a princess.” I said half tempted to pet her fur, I wondered if it was soft. It looked so touchable. Sarah giggled sitting closer to me. Before she could respond her ears dropped, her yellow eyes dulled, and I swallowed hard at that.
I saw in the distance specks rushing towards us. It was wolves, fast powerful legs moving in a beautiful pattern in the rhythmic wind. My heart escalated and I stared back at Sarah who looked down. She said quietly to me, “I should have told you to run awhile you still could have.”
I stared at her in horror and I stood up, drawing close to the fire. I eyed a slow burning log just in my reach. The pack circled the fire panting, salvia drooling from their mouths, tongues lapping. None of them spoke to me just staring at me like hungry vicious wolves.
“We found no food tonight.” Ulding barked. “I think we should split her, I want the fingers…those are my favorite.”
I felt my whole body tensing up as I saw the biggest wolf come in my range of sight. His yellow eyes glowed and he walked gracefully on the plain grass. Why didn’t he run like the others? I saw a limp in his leg and grew curious. I felt myself not even able to know how to talk as he came in my range.
He brushed past me asking Sarah “So she didn’t even run once?”
Sarah shook her head and got up from her post to greet some of the others. The black wolf, Alpha turned to look at me. His nose shortened and his eyes grew smaller changing color under the moonlight, the hairs shot into his pores and he stood on his hind legs shrinking. It was like his wolf bones could fold over and twist making human ones. It was remarkable.
He work the thing I first saw him with, his hair still silky black smooth. He had a blank stare to him as he said, “Louis, Travis”. I wasn’t going to let him again, no more would I be abused.
I shot my hand into the fire, feeling part of my skin peeling off. I pushed the pain aside swinging a branch on fire. The wolves jumped back and Sarah gasped a little be going behind a rusty colored wolf. “I WON’T TAKE THIS ANYMORE. I want my family…my home!” I snapped pointing the fire at the Alpha. I was ready to catch him on fire and watch him burn.
He saw this in my eyes and his eyebrow’s furrowed with his black thin pupil expanding in almost excited by the violent activity I was pursuing. “Hold on Louis, Travis, I think punching bag wants to be used again.”
He just enraged me and he knew he was. I charged at him with the branch, he quickly move away in speed. My eyes widened almost toppling over myself. He laughed saying “What a clumsy girl, you don’t even know how to fight! Never charge at your enemy.”
I bit my lip hard as I spun around seeing him right up and close to my face. I tried to use the branch like a baseball bat, flames flew everywhere as I swinged at the Alpha. He ducked laughing, it was like he loved the idea playing with me, torturing me with games.
Before I could notice, his foot wrapped around my ankle and kicked me to the ground. My little torch fell with me, lighting the meadow on fire beside me. The wolves jumped in surprise and the Alpha quickly picked me up, swinging me over his shoulders. I screamed kicking and punching him. My tears soaked his hair and chest and it seemed to slow his pace.
I saw we were traveling to the oak tree. The Alpha spoke loudly with pride and honor. As if he was doing some great duty of his he said “Louis, Travis come quickly with the rope we found and the torch she made for herself.”
I felt silent and my screaming and cursing stopped with his echoing words that rattled in my brain. They were going to kill me….I looked to the tree putting two and two together. I felt so helpless and I choked on a large lump. “Please.” I prayed. “Kill me some other way”
The Alpha never replied fully but just a rude remark “You deserve to burn in hell what you have done, why don’t you start early.”
He slammed me to the tree, with his two buddies Travis and Louis using long rope strapping me like a barbeque. I screamed and cried violent and each time I struggled Alpha would hit me, slapping me telling me to shut up from my crying.
His eyes glowed like the stars and the moon hit his face and I could see every inch of my future killer. I never captured the look of Louis or Travis my true enemy was their leader.’**
I stopped writing as the sky grew a little lighter. I looked at my burn scars in the light of the lamp. They were on my ankles, hands…I reached to my mirror pulling some of my orange hair away, and my neck was full of freckles which hid the burns fairly well. What a terrible memory, I faintly smiled being brave. I was so stupid trying to get away, perhaps he would have never tied me to the tree, if I weren’t so stupid.
