Mia
Song: Crazy Chicks by Ken Ashcorp
Lord, why do you hate me? Why did you think I needed these things? In my current situation, I hate you right now. Right now, I’m at the counter of my aunt’s cafe flirting with a guy to scam money out of his pocket. Don’t ask why, she said that it’s good people skills. Really I think it’s cause she’s using my tits to her advantage.
“C-can I have a….l-large white chocolate c-cappuccino please?”
This guy has been staring at me the whole fucking time I’ve been up here. Dude, my eyes are up here, not on my tits! I smiled sweetly at him and crossed my arms to make my cleavage more prominent. “Sure!” I chirped. “ Is there anything else I can get you?”
“And a cookie? No! Make it a scone!”
Okay, so you want a scone. “What kind do you want? We have blueberry, blackberry, strawberry, cheese and herb,” I leaned in a little closer to him and lowered my voice. “And cherry.”
A blush flooded his face. “Cherry! I want cherry!”
I bounced back with a smile. “Okay! So a large white chocolate cappuccino with a cherry scone. Is that everything for you?”
He nodded. I flew up and started preparing his drink while my cousin grabbed the scone and change from the stranger. I finished the cappuccino with a foam heart and went to give it to him. “Thank you for coming. Please come again.”
The guy took the cup with a blush. “Um, I was thinking…” he started. “When you get off, we could go get some food together.”
Oh, my God, what a sucker! I smiled at him sadly and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Sorry, but I’m already in a relationship.”
He looked down with a sad look. “I see. Thank you for the coffee though.” and with that he left.
My cousin Sam leaned on my shoulder. “That is such bullshit you sent his way you could fill a fucking wagon, you know that?” she asked.
“What, flirt with a blank or tell them I’m not interested?”
“How about saying you’re dating someone,” she muttered. “You don’t date. In all the years I’ve known you, not once have you been in any kind of relationship.”
Sam is my crazy cousin. She was adopted when we were still babies, and grew up with me. She was everything a black girl could be, with crazy curly hair that she kept in two puffballs on top of her head, and a body to die for. Sam was at least five inches taller than me with long legs, and an even skin tone that she didn’t need to use a bunch of makeup to cover her natural beauty. However, her looks didn’t really match her personality. Sam has always been a very sassy person, almost like the stereotypes, but smarter. Her eyes were a really pretty chocolate brown and she had the cutest button nose to match her personality.
I rolled my eyes and walked to the back where my cupcakes lay unfinished, begging for some icing to decorate them. “Oh, please! I dated a few people.”
“Name three.”
“....”
Sam raised her eyebrow at me when I didn’t answer. “Mmhm. That’s what I thought.”
I picked up my piping bag filled with bright blue icing and started on my chocolate cupcakes. “Okay, so I haven’t dated anyone. What’s the big deal with that? I don’t see you complaining about being single!”
I heard Sam sigh. “That’s because I know how dating works and I’d rather be single than have a girl keep trying to keep me in her pocket all the time.”
Did I mention she was gay? It’s one of the reasons she doesn’t flirt with anyone at the cafe. “What do you want me to do then, huh?” I had finished piping and got out my white chocolate eyes. I was making cookie monster cupcakes with a fudge filling. It was pretty fucking good if I do say so myself.
“How about you actually date someone?” she leaned against the table I was working at with her arms crossed over her chest.
“I can’t. It’ll trigger a story to develope and I’ll get dragged into the middle of it.”
Sam groaned. “There you go again about becoming a Blank! Look at you Mia! You have a face! No matter what you do, you’re a Main. You were born that way!”
“So I just have to accept that I can’t have a normal life! I have to have a story to be a little puppet in!”
My aunt came rushing in. “Mia go take care of the customers in front! I’ll finish the cakes!”
I glared at Sam, but put my bag down and stalked to the door where my aunt stood. I wanted to be like her. A Blank. She didn’t have a face sure, but she was still beautiful and happy with her life. No one messed with her because she was in some terms invisible to the Mains and Sides. She didn’t have to worry about hurting people or getting killed for a plot twist. She can live in peace.
She moved her head at me to indicate she was looking at me. “I don’t wanna hear that talk in my shop, you understand me young lady? Now go man the register.”
I nodded and left, but right before I got out of earshot, I heard her go “And you missy!” I chuckled to myself. She was always my favorite in the family. The only Blank on my mother’s side, and the only one to really understand what I’m going through. I sighed as I propped myself up on the wood counter, looking at all the people crowding the shop. Most of them were Blanks but you could see a few Mains and Sides enjoying themselves.
The door chimed as a group of girls came in, giggling and chatting within their own little circle. The leader of the group came up with a smug smirk. “Look what we have here! It’s Mia Williams, the slut trying get into Lucas’s pants.”
Great. And here I thought I could get a break from that. She leaned on the counter, getting into my face. I could practically see all the layers of makeup she put on. Why do people put all that stuff on? You’re just lying to yourself and other people. I stared at her with a bored face. Before she even talked to me I was done with her bullshit. Her crew had a little fanclub for Lucas and it kind of made me sick to my stomach. Why even bother having a fan club, saying you’re going to share them, when you’re only going to stab them in the back to try and date the “idol”.
“Are you going to order something or just hang here and try my patience?” I asked.
“I was just told you work here. Suits you sweetie. A tacky little place for a tacky little girl,” she smiled.
I sighed and stood up straight. I take that as the second. “Look,” I said “I don’t want trouble. Just order what you want and go.”
She giggled. “I’ll have a Quad Grande, NonFat, Extra Hot Caramel Macchiato Upside Down.”
One of the other girls raised her hand. “And I’ll have an Iced, Half Caff, Ristretto, Venti, 4-Pump, Sugar Free, Cinnamon, Dolce Soy Skinny Latte with a Whole wheat, Sugar free, Muffin.”
I finished off the rest of the girls’ orders and looked at my notes as soon as they left to sit at a table. I didn’t even know half the shit they just listed, much less how to make them! Be calm Mia, be calm. I ended up looking up the recipes of how to make their coffee and tea and put in a tad of my secret spice in. When I was done I loaded up two trays with their drinks and delivered.
As soon as I set down their orders the alpha chick looks up at me with disgust. “Um we ordered these to go,” she said with a sneer.
“You didn’t specify at all and you sat down at our table that says ‘For Sit Ins Only’,” I explained. “You can stay and drink here.”
Her face contorted into disgust. “Who would want to drink around all these Blanks? Don’t make me sick!”
I shrugged and walked away. She continued to scream at me and make a scene. It got to the point where Sam had to come out and try to calm her down. When my aunt came in though she just screamed even more, demanding I get fired and we kick out all the Blanks. We ended up having to call the security from the shop next door to escort her and her friends out and even then we had quite a few people leave after bussing their tables.
A few hours later, we closed up shop and started cleaning up. Sam was sweeping the floor while I handled the counters and machines. “Did you know those chicks from your school?” Sam asked me.
I was cleaning out the display case when I looked up at her. “Not really. I didn’t even know they existed until today, but I figured it out when they basically told me to lay off Lucas.”
She stopped what she was doing to raised a brow at me. “The guy that’s been harassing you for the past few weeks?”
I nodded. Damn it. We need to lay low on the lemon squares, not as many sales. “Yeah, but he’s laid low for the past few days. I kinda missed him.”
“Awe!”
“I miss kicking him in the face. You should see how far he flies sometimes.”
Sam made a face at me before looking at me like I was helpless and went back to work. I picked up the day old pastries and loaded them into a box. Looks like I have breakfast for the next few days. Mom should be happy.
