Peter and Karl had been friends since Kindergarten and the day they had met was quite an interesting one.
The first day of Kindergarten was finally upon Peter, and he was extraordinarily excited to start the day and make new friends. Now, Peter was a generally well behaved boy, always doing as he was told at home and following rules like he should. If his single mother asked for help, he would help her, as every young man should. And as every young man should, he was polite to his teacher and every other child in his class. Once introductions were over, he watched everyone closely, scanning their faces for potential friends. One little brown haired boy caught his eye, but he moved on quickly, as there was an evil, mischievous look in his eye. He decided that he would settle on a blonde haired girl with pigtails. She caught his eye and waved at him from across the room, and he waved back. Oce lunch time rolled around, he decided to sit down next to her on a small patch of grass.
“Hello!” He said, smiling at her. “I’m peter, what’s your name?” He set his lunch box down and pulled out a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
“I am Edith!” She smiled and looked at his sandwich, crunching up her nose as she relied that peanut butter was in it. Peter tilted his head and stared a her curiously.
“Eww.” She scooted away. “Is that peanut butter?”
“Ja, what about it?” He stared at her quizzically, not understanding. She stood up and took her lunch away. “ I hate peanut butter.” He watched her go with a sad expression, confused and hurt that she had left. He sat in the grass patch, slowly eating his sandwich that had lost him a friend, for some odd reason. When the other students were done with their lunches, they all bolted for the playground, leaving him behind with the ants. Little did he know that Karl, mutinous Karl, was planning something splendid.
As Peter watched and saw the small boy with the brown hair start collecting ants, worms and bugs in his pockets, he just had to investigate. He hid behind a corner and watched him closely. After the fifteenth beetle, the boy had seemed to decide that was enough and started walking towards Edith. Peter realised what was going to happen and followed him in panic.
Before Peter could make it to the boy, the bug and ants were already crawling over Edith. Peter tackled the boy and pinned him to the ground just as Edith started screaming. The teacher rushed over and saw the situation. She grabbed Peter and the other boy by the ears and marched them back to the classroom.
“Im Karl.” The boy whispered quietly and smiled.
“Was ist los?” What is this? She asked angrily and pointed at Karl’s dirty pockets. “Explain yourself!”
Karl grinned and shoved his hands into his pockets. “
Just a little game!” He said in a squeaky voice. The teacher sighed and walked towards the phone.
“Im calling both of your mother’s.” She said and started dialing on the phone. Peter’s heart
dropped as he watched her do so. Tears brimmed his eyes and he sat down at one of the tables, covering his face with his tiny hands. Karl sat down next to him and patted his back.
“Hey, please don’t be upset.” He smiled and tilted his head. “It’s not that bad, plus, I’m the one who did it!” He grinned and laid his head down on the table facing Peter. Lifting his head, Peter looked over at him and hiccuped.
“Are you sure?”
“‘Course I am!” He wiped his nose, smearing mud on it. “Wanna be friends?”
Peter nodded, of course, and they soon found that they lived fairly close to each other. They stayed friends through all of school, up until where the story begins.
