Maybe was known for being a little odd and everyone knew it but that wasn’t what made them popular. It was the fact that they were the only Pernal within the whole institute and their questionable gender.
Around the sixth day of the first week, there was this craze to find out Maybe’s gender. Whenever you saw a group of Verses, you knew that Maybe was right in the middle, the center of attention! Leading them with their jokes and mystery that shrouded them. I would watch them stroll across the yard, and Verses scorned in jealousy.
“That damn Pernal!” I heard a couple of guys curse before plotting to get close to them to reveal their gender.
The females in some of my classes wished that Maybe was a male and was probably muscular to some extent but just hid it underneath the clothes. The swooned before vowing to take as many pictures as possible of them and thus creating the "Maybe Fanclub" which was closer to stalking than an actual Fanclub.
The males, however, dreamed of Maybe being a female but was somewhat boyish and could play sports along side with them. They wondered if Maybe had some sort of fear for horror and would scream loudly before grasping onto them. They ended up joining the Maybe Fanclub but it wasn't long before the club split into two parts.
Female!Maybe Fanclub and Male!Maybe Fanclub.
I found this entire thing odd but shrugged it off because it wasn’t any of my business. I told myself that but in truth, I watched Maybe stroll through the yard almost every day since the first day.
I wondered about how their day was going and what they loved to eat. Do they have hardass classes too with teachers they don't like? I wonder what they like to do in their spare time. Do they read? Are those people bothering them constantly? I would beat the shit out of them. But perhaps, Maybe is used to being popular.
I sighed as the crowd stopped and Maybe emerged to the front. They were talking to the group until suddenly they turned their head towards my direction and I swore our eyes met.
Quickly I spun around and walked away from the window. That very day I decided to skip one of my boring lecture classes that old Haggle lady taught. I never liked the Sling Verse. They just had a strange tone in their voice like they wanted to eat you.
I ended up hiding in the back of the Institute, hoping no one would catch me between the rose bushes back against the wall. Suddenly, a figure shaded over me and the sound of bushes being pushed to the side rustled. The amethyst eyes glowed, staring down at me. At that moment, fear stepped into me. Causing my heart to cease.
