Seeds of the Dead

The First Day Without Them

The First Day Without Them

Aug 30, 2017

His eyes had run out of tear and were now filled with rage. Jeremy turned away from me, as he shoved the house phone into my hand. Grabbing the phone, I clinched it, as more tears fell from eyes, tapping it against my forehead. I thought about spending the rest of my life in jail, then I thought about never seeing Ma and Pa again. No matter the route, my emotion will feel weary after what happened today. As I wiped the tears from my eyes and cleared my throat, I dialed 911. The phone rang once and went straight to a voice message after.

"Texas is in a state of emergency. Your local first responders are currently handling situations in your area or another. We ask that you find a way to the hospital if you are hurt or injured. All who are not injured nor hurt, we ask that you stay in your homes. Please do not leave your home for any reason and do not answer your doors unless it's a state official. Again, only open your doors for Texas officials. Good-bye."

The phone hung up. I looked at up at Jeremy, who continued to give me his spiteful glare. He heard the message just as well as I had, though it wasn't on speakerphone.

"What now?" he asserted.

I shrugged my shoulders, sighed, then wiped the rest of my tears. "I don't know. Let's try going next door to get some help."

Jeremy nodded as his eyes began to fill with water again. Grabbing my hatchet and got up from the ground, then Jeremy and I hiked to the Brantley's house. Jeremy strolled behind me as we walked, he didn't say a word to me and I was too ashamed to start a conversation with him. So, I just listened to his footsteps to make sure he wasn't falling too far behind.

When we arrived at the Brantley's house, I knocked on the front door, but no one answered. Mr. Brantley's new green pick-up and Mrs. Brantley blue car were parked in the driveway. Which meant one of them had to be home. I knocked on the door again, still no answer. I called out to them, yet no one replied. The door was unlocked so I turned the doorknob and opened the door. I entered their home, Jeremy followed, and looked around the hallway, which looked nearly identical to ours. The only difference was their brown walls, pictures and furniture. I heard their television on the news channel and noticed how uneasy the reporter spoke. I didn't pay much attention to what the reporter said, instead, my eyes and ears were focused on finding the Brantley's. Then I heard someone in the kitchen, whoever it was sounded as if they were out of breath. I called out to Mr. and Mrs. Brantley again, still no answer. I crept through their hallway toward the kitchen, passing the living room and staircase. When I reached their kitchen, I saw the most horrific sight I had ever saw. Mr. Brantley knelling over Mrs. Brantly's body, pulling her guts out her abdomen and eating them. I stood in the kitchen, watching him pull her kidney, stomach, and intestine out her body and ripping them apart with his teeth. He chomped, chewed, and swallowed her flesh as if he was dying of starvation. I became frightened by the gruesome sight I witnessed. My throbbing neck hurt, due to my hasteful heartbeat, my body trembled again, and because of anxiety my eyes began to fill with tears. Jeremy stood next to me with his eyes wide open. He was just as frightened as I was, if not more. He and I could have easily been spotted by Mr. Brantley, but Mr. Brantley didn't give us the slightest attention, he was more focused on eating Mrs. Brantley. What the hell is going on? Why is everyone trying to eat each other?

Though, scared for my life, I tried to stay calm for Jeremy. I had to get him out of here before Mr. Brantley spotted us. Keeping my eyes focused on Mr. Brantley, I whispered to Jeremy. "Jeremy, we're going to walk away as quietly and slowly as we can."

"Mr. Brantley! What the hell are you doing?!" Jeremy shouted. I thought Jeremy was still next to me, however, he moved around to the opposite side of the kitchen. Mr. Brantley lifted his head, focused his glowing green eyes on Jeremy, then jolted straight to him. Jeremy screamed and ran toward me. This time, I didn't run, though I was scared, as a matter of fact, I was so scared that I felt my tears making their way out my eyes, regardless of my fear, I clinched my hatchet and prepared to fight for my life, because I knew we couldn't out run him. Whatever was happening to them, made them stronger and faster than us. The only way for Jeremy and I to live was for Mr. Brantley to die.

Mr. Brantley dashed toward me, in pursuit of Jeremy. When he was just in arms reach, I slashed my hatchet into his chest, cutting him deep enough to puncture his heart, however that didn't slow him down. Mr. Brantley ran into me, knocking us both on the floor. I pushed against his chin with the palm of my hand and repeatedly struck him in his face with my hatchet, but it didn't have any effect on him. He scratched my face trying to get close enough to bite me. He chopped his teeth at me as he got closer to my face. With all my might, I pushed his chin away from my face and struck him in his forehead as many times as I could with my hatchet.

"Splat!" "Splat!" "Splat!"

I kept striking as his blood splattered over the floor and walls. I kept striking even after he stopped attacking. I struck and struck until I knew he was dead. After my last strike, I pushed Mr. Brantley off me and sat up against wall, to catch my breath, then wiped the bulk of his blood off my face. Jeremy sat in the middle of the hallway trembling, with his eyes fill with fear as he stared at my bloody face. He gulped when I glanced at him. Taking a deep breath, I turned my head away from him. I wasn't sure if he feared Mr. Brantley or me.

"Are you alright?" I asked, as I huffed and puffed. He nodded. "I don't know what's going on, but we need help."

I got up off the wall, walked pass him and entered their living room. He nodded again and followed me into the Brantley's living room. The news was still on, so I turned the volume up on the television. The female reporter, who gave the news, looked nervous and sounded frightened as she spoke. The way she spoke made me feel uneasy and afraid.

"We are asking everyone to stay indoors. This is not a joke or a test. I repeat, this is not a joke or a test. There is a disease that is causing humans to eat other humans. We do not know anything about this disease, besides the fact, that it will kill and you can contract it if you are bitten by someone infected. Please do not get bitten, you will become infected immediately, just as they are. Please do not help others, our government is asking you to trust it and no one else. This epidemic has spread through the United States swiftly. Please do not leave your homes until this epidemic is over. We ask that no one answer their doors for anyone, unless they are a government official. Attempting to call the police will be useless, every officer is on duty helping control this horrific situation. Martial Law will be in affect soon, until then we ask that everyone please stay in their homes. Help is on the way people and again please stay indoors!"
