3- What makes you happy?

3- What makes you happy?

Sep 04, 2017

During my orientation for college, I met this one girl. I was blabbering about which clubs I wanted to join at college and it surprised me when I asked her which she wanted to join and her answer surprised me.

None... at the moment. Really, none? Although I knew it was quite reasonable to slowly ease into college life before jumping into anything else, it was also possible to try different clubs without commitment. See how they feel for you. I heard you have more free time as a freshman than the next three years, so I thought okay, let's make use of that time.

I told her how clubs would be my escape from all the stressful studying, you know stuff like learning about cooking and writing and dancing without the pressure to get at least 2.8 on a certain exam at the end of the course. But she replied to me: "isn't that what friends are for?" It was a mini mind blowing moment for me. Oh... so people hang out with others to de-stress? It totally made sense as I see people around me crave hanging out with their friends. Some of my friends ask me out constantly even though they knew I couldn't go to the area where they lived for a certain reason (ahem, my mom didn't want to drive around there and I'm scared to take on the wheels). I always felt weird because I was fine even if I didn't hang out. Talk to me at school and we'd be chatting nonstop, talk to me when I'm at home and you would almost think I ceased to exist.

I thought most people were the same as me, desperately trying to make sense of my own and others' feelings and express them in a way people would feel thankful for having to word the feelings they couldn't understand. With her sentence, I understood: different people have their way of feeling happy and no one is less than another for choosing a different way to be happy. Those who think otherwise, are jerks. Well, maybe they aren't but educate them will ya? I'm just joking ;)
