Anatomy of a Raven

Chapter 2 - Break

Chapter 2 - Break

Sep 09, 2017

Iris hadn't been drawn to a human in almost a week. Nothing to bother her, nothing to interrupt her. She had just eaten and she sat on a branch of a tree that was starting to bud. The springtime air swirled around her, ruffling her feathers. Another raven screeched from a distance, signaling to it's siblings that a human had died. Iris generally kept her experiences of human death to herself, but others liked to announce they were open.

The sun warmed up as it rose in the sky. It gave a purple-ish blue tint to Iris's plumage. As she preened, something pricked her gut. But it was so faint, Iris barely noticed. But she did when she realized it wasn't going to go away. Could this possibly be a human death signal? But it was so faint! It didn't feel at all normal. She decided to follow it.

A tan brick house stood out against a green field of grass and wild flowers. From her perch, Iris could hear dishes clinking and water running. But the feeling was not pointing to that direction. Instead, it came from a second story window that was shut and dark. Iris sighed. The human was definitely in that room. But because the feeling in her gut was so weak, it probably had a while yet before it died. She decided she would settle in, she would probably be there for a while. Maybe this time, the humans would take a hint.

Not once had Iris seen the human that was destined to die come outside. That is, until today. A boy of maybe twelve years old stepped uncertainly out the front door. He had black hair and green eyes, and he was thin. He walked a little ways before sitting down in a patch of shade under a tree. The feeling was no stronger. Iris cocked her head. Something about this boy was intriguing. She took off and landed next to his leg, certain he would not hurt her, he seemed weak. The boy flinched, his long black hair covered most of his eyes, but Iris could see a glint of fear. She reached out a wing and brushed it against his knee, he relaxed. Slowly, he reached out a finger and stroked under her beak.

"I know why you're here." He whispered.
