It was a day like any other, just like how most stories start I suppose.
I was on my way home from work, as per usual, stopping by the pharmacy to renew a couple of prescriptions. There was nothing significant, other than the pleasant weather, which I don't often see this time of year.
They always schedule the rain and snow in the 'winter time'. Be it for a sense of normalcy, or some ecological or environmental benefit, I never thought much of it to argue. Rainy days are my favorite after all, it's the cold I could do without not that we'd have any way of controlling it.
I stopped myself on the edge of the sidewalk, the crowd was getting a bit too overwhelming. And since my headphones had broken that morning, I really had nothing to distract from it. I read the papers in my hands, over and over, hoping to either calm myself or for the crowd to go down. The latter only seeming to get worse as time passed.
Just as I had gathered myself enough to keep walking a passerby turned around abruptly, their duffle bag knocking me off my feet and into the street. The first thing I noticed was my glasses on the ground, sure, I could see without them fairly well, but with my sensory issues flaring up as they were... My sudden loss of depth perception would not be kind enough to let me get back up on my feet. I quickly grab them vaguely crawling away from the smack center of the street.
There was a loud screeching sound in the distance, I had noticed it far too late however. Having placed my glasses back onto my face I turned towards the noise. 'A school bus?' I thought to myself. And while most people might think at this moment, OF COURSE Orion, admire the vehicle about to hit you like a deer in headlights; it was more or less shock than anything else.
We don't have buses here. We never had. Between the trains and trolleys or even the automated cars and things of that nature, it just wasn't reasonable for anyone to own a car let alone afford one outside the main city, for it to be a bus of all things, a school bus no less, was just jarring all on its own.
I wasn't the only one bewildered by it either, not that it mattered as my confusion soon turned into resignation.
According to my calculations, I knew I wouldn't make it out of the way in time. Suddenly, I could feel the cold ground beneath me, had I always been lying on the ground? Voices frantically buzzed around me and yet, I could not comprehend a single word. I entered a sudden panic as a burning sensation built up inside of me.
Only for a moment, just a moment, soon enough I felt nothing at all.
That’s when I realized, I was probably dead. I always knew that school would kill me.
As far as I knew, I had never been dead before, so it's not like I could decipher my current state of being but even so I couldn't help but think that.
