"Are you crazy?" Kaden Stone's furious voice broke the silence. Mirai sighed. It was always like this, at times she wondered why she didn't just betray the whole lot of these morons, get the reward for their capture, and just go off on her own in this world. She was after all, Mirai Jennifer Rouge. There were countless rumours following the young woman around, ranging from her being a psychopathic murderer to her being a freedom fighting hero. It depended which side of this revolution you were on, she supposed, which you decided was true.
If these two idiots didn't shut up, the might be experiencing the former of these rumours by the time the day was over.
"It's perfectly reasonable! You just need to get your head screwed on straight and see that! Everyone else is perfectly fine with this plan!" Lamia screeched back. Kaden was the only of the six who was stupid enough to argue with Lamia Oscissor. The rest of them had the sense to not piss off an infamous serial killer. It was strange how they had become friends with the girl, however it wasn't something they really questioned. Mirai honestly suspected the only reason that nothing had mysteriously happened to Kaden in the middle of the night was because Lamia had a soft spot for the young man.
"Will you let Mirai speak? She is the strategist here! If you have any fucking issues, let her fucking solve them!" Leo Stone's voice added to the din, trying to diffuse the argument. Leo was the identical twin of Kaden, and always tried to be the voice of reason. It was a shame nobody in this disastrous group of misfits and rejects was ever reasonable but him. It was a wonder they hadn't all killed each other by this point in time.
"NO!" Kaden and Lamia yelled in unison. They did that a lot, speak in sync with each other. It was one of the few things that could scare Mirai. There was just something so unnerving about it.
"Chicos, we're supposed to be un equipo! This is not how equipos work!" Faye Winter's voice was powerful yet quiet, despite her tough appearance. The dark skinned girl was 5" 4' of muscle and anxiety, and usually avoided any verbal conflicts where possible, though she seemed to excel when things became physical. If Faye was telling them to stop, there was definitely an issue. Mirai didn't catch exactly what Kaden snapped at her, but the impatience in her eyes faded and she took a step away, towards where Hollye Jales stood, tall, skinny and intimidating. If looks could kill, he would have murdered every single person in the room within seconds. He was the most mysterious of the group, all Mirai knew about him was that he was Islamic, a demon-genie hybrid - which made him near invincible - and was gender fluid. Though, the others might think that she was mysterious, Mirai thought. Besides Faye, nobody knew much about her. Well... not as much as they thought. She dreaded when she'd have to admit it to them that quite a lot of what she had told them had not been... entirely truthful. She didn't do it for no reason, there was a perfectly good reason for it.
Well, in her eyes there was anyway.
Mirai's attention was drawn back to the arguing couple. Leo was making no progress in calming the two. Mirai internally groaned, and stood up, ignoring the sharp pain that ripped through her left leg. She limped towards the two.
"SHUT UP! Both of you, shut it!" She shouted, her soft voice sounding strange when angry. It was powerful, and sliced through the air like a dagger. The resulting silence unfortunately did not last long.
"Or what Mirai? You'll limp at us?" Kaden asked mockingly. Mirai was only half aware of Leo's, or was it Lamia's, sharp intake of breath.
"Remember when I got this fucking limp? I got this limp saving your sorry hind. If you decide to mock me about it again," Mirai didn't finish her sentence, but in one fluid movement, she took one of the twin pistols at her hips from it's holster, and pointed it at Kaden's leg. She then raised it, so it pointed towards his chest, and shoved him hard with it, before swishing around and walking as gracefully as she could back to the seat she had claimed. Actually, Faye had claimed it for her. Mirai had mentioned that her leg had been painful recently, and Faye had forced her to rest it for as long as possible. Literally forced her. Faye could be very persuasive when she wished to be.
When the silence had settled for a few minutes, Mirai began to speak again.
"So, do you all know what you're doing? It's a completely human run base according to the files, so we shouldn't have much problems with magic." Her gaze around the room seemed to be more of a challenge than a question. Sure, Mirai wasn't very intimidating to these people, however it made her feel more secure in herself. Besides, it was pretty hard to be intimidating to people who knew that she had once broken down at 3am, whilst drunk as fuck, because she had dropped a spoon. Kaden still had that video.
"Well, why are you guys going down the the archives? Can't you just hack their system?" Lamia inquired, perching herself on the windowsill, which wasn't beside a window but what had once been one, and was now an empty hole which acted as air conditioning in the stuffy room.
They had made a room above an abandoned pub their base whilst in Kineria City. It was impractical, uncomfortable, but it was free, and they needed to save their money for emergencies. It was pretty bare of furniture, a broken double bed, a couple of chairs and the one large circular table. Sleeping was always an issue, everybody wanted the bed but Kaden refused to share with the guys because 'thats gay'. Faye and Mirai had both been extremely pissed off at him for this, and had both lectured him for it, however he wouldn't change his fixed, flawed mindset. Most nights, the others just decided to all try fit on the bed, and let Kaden sort his own problems out.
"Well I have a... how do you say...." Faye followed this utterance with a series of uninterpretable hand gestures. Human - or as she called it, Inglés - was not Faye's native language. She spoke succubi, or Español, and Mirai was surprised at how quickly the young woman had picked the language up, however she was in no way fluent, and couldn't read or write the unfamiliar language.
"Mierda..." she muttered, looking around at the confused faces. "A... you know... teoría!"
"Theory," Mirai didn't look up as she translated.
"Sí. Theory. Thank you. I want to check my theory, and the archives are the best place to check it."
Faye was lying. Faye was lying to cover for Mirai. Mirai didn't want them to all know, not yet.
She needed to find out if James was still alive.
It had been 4 years since Mirai had last seen her brother, and it had not been in the best situation. She was pretty sure that he had been alive a year ago. She had received a note from a 'mysterious J' and James was really the only person it could be. He'd told her that he was waiting for her.
She had to know if he still was.
Faye knew all this of course. It had actually been Faye's idea to check the archives for any record of him in the first place.
Mirai wasn't sure why she trusted Faye so much. She had barely known her a year, yet she felt she could tell the woman all her secrets with no consequence.
Faye just made her feel... safe.
Mirai watched the group fade away into the distance as she and Faye got into position, hiding amongst the wilderness around the back of the Assossiation base. These bastards had taken everything from her, and this was all she could really do for now. Destroy their bases. Try take them down. She glanced over at Faye in the fading light of the night. She knew that face so well. Every single freckle, every curve.... yet Mirai couldn't help but want to know it even better.
"Que'tal?" The question came suddenly, and it took Mirai a moment to register it, and what it meant.
"I'm fine. You?" Faye nodded.
"I'm great." There was silence for a few moments, before Faye spoke again. "Why won't you tell the others?" She blurted. Mirai stared at her for a few seconds, before allowing a nervous titter.
"Tell them who I am? They'd hate me. They'd hate me for who I am, and for keeping something so big from them. I... I don't want to lose them."
It looked as if Faye was about to respond, but the sound of an explosion stole the words from her lungs. Mirai looked away, before biting down hard on her bottom lip. A bead of blood escaped, and she wiped it onto her thumb, which in turn she slid across the barrel of the guns. They lit up with roses and feathers of silver light, and Mirai grinned a little. She aimed them at the first floor window, and fired.
