The War of Apiary

Slave to Determination

Slave to Determination

Sep 10, 2017

The desire in Mellifera heart to make her father proud burned stronger then ever before.

She worked through most nights, sometimes only sleeping 5 hours in a week. The flame burned high with determination to rediscover the cure.

Groups of scientists were sent out to the upper islands of where Norway use to be before the Great War of AD to study an old mine that the Ancestor used as a Data storage place called the Cloud.

Now that her father had told her his planes, she also had access to information about the disease and where it came from. She read about Mr. Jones going up in green land to gather ice that had been frozen since the last small ice age that happened 2030.

Miss Keebly then studied the ice and discovered a bacteria that had the same side effects on bees as the Ancestors had described what AFB and the European Foul Brood had on bees.

All this new information about how Jones found the disease made Mellifera feel even more repulsive towards him.

She felt irritated about not being aloud to tell Helen the real reason to why they had to switch from working on the BEE to finding a cure. But Helen didn't seem to say anything. She felt the tension between Mellifera and her father and must of sense not to ask questions.

A month passed and the scientists came back from there tripe to the Islands of Norway. That same day there was a large commotion in the cafeteria about what they had unearthed in the Cloud.

Dr. Rafael Veerachat supposedly brought back data that talked about a gen editing tool that the ancestors used. They called it CrispBar.

Mellifera wasn't sure to believe the rumors until a meeting was hold to discuss the findings at the new data storage location of the ancestors. In the mean time she and Helen worked away at finding a cure to the disease.

Eventually a meeting was called and everyone seemed to be excited about what was going to be shared at it. Ideas floated around the chattering scientists as they located seats for themselves in the massive council room. Over five hundred scientists had sat down by the time Apis strolled into the council chamber smiling. He was rubbing his hands together and looked happy. Mellifera knew at once that the expedition had been more then a success. It was neuronally changing.

Apis tapped a microphone that was on a stand to hush to people.

"Fellow scientists of the QC." Apis began. "I have asked you here today to see and hear the discoveries that we unearthed in the Cloud. I am vary glad to announce that the expedition that we sent up to the Islands of Norway was a success. Dr. Rafael, the leading scientist on the expedition can come up and give his own account." The chamber filled with clapping and cheering. Apis smiled and took a seat while a man in his early twenties got up from the from row and stood in front of the microphone. The crowed of scientists applauded.

"Hello brothers and sister of the SSQC. I am pleased to stand here today and give you what I found in my researchers." He said with a deep accent.

"When we were over in the Cloud data base, to my surprise, we did find data that talks about how human lived in the years before the Great War. The way they lived before the War was one of the reasons why the Bee population dropped dramatically. When the group and I got down into the Cloud, we found that many of the data stores had disintegrated do to malfunctions in the cooling systems that the ancestors used. So we were pretty spectacle that we would find anything at all." He paused to let his words sink in. A smile flashed across his face.

"But what we did find besides the information on how we lived before the War was outstanding. We found that our ancestors used a technology to edit their own genes by simply using a protein found in bacteria that has survived a virus attack. We as of yet are not totally sure why but the ancestors called the technique 'CrispBar'. With this new technology we can now do gene editing much more effective and much quicker. When you all return to your labs after this meeting a sample of the technology will be waiting for you there to test. With in no time at all we, the QC, will have a legion of programmed men that will unite the Nations as one!" With that, Dr. Rafael gave a small bow and took his seat. The room cheered at hearing the news.

Apis got up and stood in front of the microphone once more.

"As you can see that is my plan, to unite all of the Nations as one and then move onwards to the west where the rebellion is hiding in the depths of the Americas. I might as well tell you all now about my plan, for it is not a good thing for all of you to be working in the dark without knowing what you are working towards. And if you don't like the idea you can go and work for the rebellion." He let silence settle on the room before continuing.

"This was an idea that I have been working on since before my late wife Laminae was voted into power. And I intend to carry it through. That is all, you can all go back to your labs, and if you want test out the samples that are provided to test the CrispBar Technology. You will be testing it on a simple yeast for now until we understand how to do it more complexly. That is all." Apis strolled out of the chamber leaving the 500 or so scientists to grasp what had just been explained. They all liked to idea of working to gather in uniting the Nations as one.

Important note from Author. "This has not been edited, it will only be edited when I finish writing it. And even then I might change the storyline a lot from what's here. I also upload one chapter every Saturday."

Inspired by the book series "Mortal Engines" by Philip Reeve.

All ideas are my own.

In 2030 the world's bee population dwindled. AFB (American foulbrood) destroyed nearly all the hives on the planet. Food shortages hit shortly after causing widespread panic as food crops died. World war three started as countries fought over the few remaining bees in a desperate attempt to thwart starvation. The great Republic of China was the first to develop the cure that finally stopping the spread of AFB, but the damage had been done. The human race had only a few survivors. After the War, the Age of Eugenics was birthed, killing thousands and important knowlage was lost during the dark age which lasted for 30 years. In 2060 the idea of a clean happy future was born. The Queen's Council was built in the hopes that peace could be maintained through the care of bees. Every child on reaching their fifth birthday would be tested, those allergic to bee venom were schooled in a variety of trades but all others learned the sacred art of bee keeping. The council maintained peace for many generations and the world prospered. Then came rumours. Rumors of another bee killer.
