"Isabel, guess what?" I asked as soon as I saw her in the morning, the day after the party. She looked at me with black underneath her eyes, as she started to get her makeup out.
"I'm putting makeup on, Nick." Isabel said as she picked up her concealer or whatever, "Can't you save your guessing games for later?"
"No, I have to tell you now, before I leave." I said. She put the bottle down and looks at me, slowly starting to smile.
"He asked you out?!" She shouted.
"Yeah." I said, "How did you know?"
"I hoped for it for you." Isabel said, "You've liked him for what feels like forever. So, what are you going to wear?"- Isabel looked at my outfit and sighed,- "Hopefully not that." She pointed to my rainbow sweatshirt and neon green t-shirt.
"What's wrong with this?" I asked. Isabel laughed.
"You shouldn't wear a sweatshirt, Nick." Isabel said, "A sweater, maybe. But a sweatshirt? That makes you look like you don't care. You want to look nice, right?"
"Sure, I'll wear a sweater..." I said dejectedly.
"Your cat sweater would be perfect." Isabel said.
"The one where the cat is wearing a bow tie?" I asked.
"Yeah, that one." Isabel said, "Now, let me do my makeup."
"Why do you need your makeup done?" I asked, "It's Saturday?"
"Like you, I have a date too." Isabel said. I frowned, hopefully not another football player or player. "And no, he isn't a football player. His name is Brady Thomas." My eyes widened, a basketball player? That was new...
"Why him?" I asked, "You don't date guys that tall."
"He's cute." Isabel said, "The way he blushed when he spilled his drink on me was adorable." I shook my head.
"And you took the date as a way for him to repay you for spilling his drink on you?" I asked. She nodded.
"Now shoo, Nick." Isabel said as she picked the bottle of makeup back up and made the shooing motion with her other hand.
"Love you too, Isabel." I said as I left the room. I got changed into my gray cat in a bow tie sweater and looked at myself in the mirror. I looked horrible, but it was okay enough if I fixed my hair. I decided that I looked fine after brushing my hair a few times and headed downstairs. When I got into the kitchen, Mom and Dad were there looking awkwardly at each other.
"What's wrong?" I asked, "Why aren't you guys at the hotel?" They turned to look at me. Mom studied my face, while Dad look at my sweater awkwardly. Mom was pretty with long dark brown hair and brown eyes. Dad looked more mature, but Mom was older by a year. Dad had short blond hair and gray eyes, he had a beard as well, with bits of gray in it.
"I was worried about you, Nick." Mom said, "And I had a nightmare that you and Isabel got hurt and were running away from a murderer."
"Mom, I'm fine." I said, "Isabel is fine. Nobody is hurt." Mom frowned.
"Nick, I think you should know..." Mom said, "Grandpa Bill was released from prison yesterday." I gasped.
"The one who..." I asked. "And you think that he's after us next?"
"Yes." Mom said, "I don't know what he's going to do next an that's what scares me the most." Dad put his hand on Mom's shoulder.
"I know this is hard on you, sweetie," Dad said, "But you shouldn't worry the kids too much." Mom looked at him in a very upsetting manner.
"But he hurt my mother." Mom said, "You didn't even see what he did to her. He shouldn't be out of prison."
"Um..." I said trying to change the subject, "I have a date tonight, should I reschedule?" Mom sighed and Dad sent a sad smile my way.
"Do I know her?" Mom asked. I sighed.
"Mom, you know that I'm gay." I said, "And yes, you do." Dad sighed.
"Okay, what's his name?" Mom asked.
"Drake Horner." I said. Dad laughed.
"The kid who ate all the candy and ran around the party like he was doing track until he passed out in his slice of cake?" Dad asked through laughs. I frowned, when did this happen?
"When you guys were five." Mom said, trying to help me remember. I gasped remembering the incident.
"Oh god." I said, "But yes."
"His mother never let him have sugar growing up, but I think she stopped after that incident." Mom said. "You can go, but stay safe." Mom said. I nodded.
"I'll stay safe." I said, "I promise."
