While the two dolls were out, Rex straightened up his back and looked around him. He saw that his guitar that's cleverly disguised as an ax, only able to be distinguished by the thin silver lines from the end of the pole and to the ax, was back in his hands, but he was a little confused on why he was on a pedestal. He stepped off of it and saw the engraving under it,
Man of Rock
…it read. Rex was smiled on the title that was given to him, even though he didn’t remember where he was now since that dark as always night in Darkopolis, but he was just happy that he still had his guitar and his long straight but a little messed up hair. He looked down to see who were the ones who returned it to him, he only saw a pair of Greyscalians on the floor with bits of porcelain on the floor, they looked like they came from Monochrome Metropolis, there was also two clockwork birds now broken beyond repair, Rex was standing in the center of right now. He looked down on their heads and saw they were out cold, but the weirdest thing was that unlike any of the Greyscalians who went on their day on the sidewalk, these two had a big crack wide open. Rex was taken by surprise from this by how weird it actually looked to see porcelain teeth with almost nothing else inside a Metro-Greyscalian, he only had a mask on that just screamed, "Anti-Hero" that can shift with his expressions and even let him talk. Rex crouched down on them and poked them a little with his ax, the girl got up first and looked around and when she met her gaze with Rex she shouted in surprise and backed away from him.
Dovelie was surprised on what she took sight on this Greyscalian, she never saw anyone like him, a huge frame with a built body and strong arms, the guitar he wielded was perfect for him to carry with only one hand and to her, he looked like an ax murderer with his skull mask and almost all black costume with a hint of dark blue and red in there, but something in his hair looked like he wasn't a crazed lunatic but more of some kind of unheroic hero, and maybe that's what he was. Dovelie approached him slowly, comprehending what just happened and how some kind of noise was made when that obviously didn't sound like anything she could have imagined. She then started to gesture a question, "Who... are you...?" Dovelie ended up saying the words with them, she was frozen on what that sound came from and she thought she was the only one who heard it.
"I'm sorry if I scared you miss, I'm Rex, The Man of Rock, it's what it says on my pedestal," Rex replied to politely, he wasn't usually this polite before but he wanted to make a good impression if he wanted to be treated as a hero, so much an anti-hero.
Dovelie was in some state of shock, completely ignoring what Rex said and was having her hand hovering over a hole in her face, she felt the ridges and bumps of an uneven line of chipped and cracked porcelain on her face. As she felt a little more shocked, the hole widened more and it surprised her more.
Coal wasn't any better, as he got up from his second time being unconscious, he was seeing the perceived ax murderer in front of Dovelie who looked frozen in fear. He acted quick and he protected Dovelie by sliding in front of her between the huge man, "Don't worry, kid! I'll protect... you..." Coal slowed his words down and his hostile tone went down as well, he was just as horrified of his new teeth that were just like Dovelie's, however, Coal quickly recovered of this revelation and decided to see if he can talk to her, "Uh, kid, who’s your pal?” he said to her cautiously,
"That's Rex, he's from that statue named, The Man of Rock. He's the person that owns the ax."
"Uh, it's called a guitar, but 'axe' is its slang term but I know you meant the literal term." Rex butted in,
"'Slang'?" Coal asked, he knew most things but that word wasn't most things,
"I guess you never heard of it, it's basically just a casual way to say things to friends, so yeah, this is my axe, with an 'e'."
"Wait, so are you considering us friends?" Coal asked,
"Uh, yeah, I guess you can say it that way."
"Then are you willing to walk to cities to cities to stop a Colorfying Criminal?"
"Who's that?"
Coal explained who he actually meant, which Dovelie told him that the girl's name was Rainbow.
"Oh, that girl. I know her type, they're given this quest that they must find a place with all these remnants of some previous world and that they have to restore it but it doesn't work because there's always another one. Anyway, don't mind about my rambling, I'll be happy to travel with you."
"Good, now what's a good place for our next destination?" Coal asked the others as he slipped out a fedora to put on,
"How about Clearwater City? It's the closest place and it's probably where Rainbow is." Dovelie suggested, she still somehow remembered the signs back at the crossroads, maybe it was because she had no memories besides sleeping.
"Then we'll go there then, I have enough things in here for all of us and if we go now, we'll get there before nightfall." The three then started walking at their even pace and they were already on the outskirts of the city.
Coal was wrong about the journey only taking a day since he didn't put in the fact that it was already evening when they started traveling to Clearwater City. The three made camp near the crossroads and they were all resting by a white fire in the middle of complete darkness, trying to pass the time until they were tired. "So, Rex, where did you come from?" Coal asked him, he was subtly scanning all over him from his outfit that was desaturated, only showing just a tinge of red and blue here and there and black which contrasted to the bright and loud colors of Rainbow and her entourage, it was obvious Rex was native to Greyscale,
"I came from Darkopolis, it's the only place where it's completely dark as the night, right after Moonlight Mansion, I don't know how I got over to Monochrome Metropolis. I know everyone there's a regular 'Coal' and 'Dove' just like you two but you get a unique one once in awhile." Rex said,
"But there's never been any history about any uniqueness in Greyscale." Coal counteracted Rex's statement,
"You're here and nobody knows about you... yet. It's not that there's been no one unique in history, but no one bothered to write it down." Rex said. Coal seemed to have gotten to where Rex was coming from and so he stopped asking questions and thought that if anybody that had good intentions, it was Rex. He just went to sleep quickly leaving Dovelie and Rex to their own devices. "So, Rex, what's with the getup? I've never seen anybody in Greyscale wear... that... well, I never saw anybody in general but you know what I mean."
"Oh, this ol' thing? It's just a costume I made to match my guitar and my intent on becoming an anti-hero, and that was kind of it. Usually, it's just something I like to express myself with through music and my wardrobe, uniqueness like that is the reason how I'm talking and blinking at you." Rex lied to her, he actually didn't where it came from since he only remembered wearing this outfit and that was that in Darkopolis,
“That’s pretty… good about that choice of wardrobe. I just wear this dress because I have nothing, I like it but I feel like I can do better.” Dovelie responded with, he then came to realized she still had that bag with her, “Hey, I have something if you want it.” she said digging through her bag, she then got out the tray of card cookies that were still in the same position Dovelie found them, “You want a cookie?” she asked handing out the tray,
“Wow, these look pretty tasty!” Rex said with an invisible smile under his mask, he took a seven of clubs off the tray, “Don’t mind if I do!” he then slid the cookie under his mask and his ghostly teeth started munching it down under the mask, it was something that Rex had never tasted, it was… wonderful and strange at the same time. Rex was too focused on this lighthearted feeling in him to talk to Dovelie anymore and he slowly fell asleep on the quilted covers of Coal’s briefcase
“Uh… good night, Rex.” Dovelie simply said and going back to sleep.
