Today is a pep rally at school. We have one every time football season kicks in. We see the lineup, the cheerleaders, the ever so exciting mascot Ollie the otter. He always does some cartwheels and once had to get sent to the hospital for landing in a bad position after a flip. It was a terrible day.
I see Juliana the photographer for the school yearbook taking pictures. She is taking them from many angles. Up on the bleachers, on the floor, her knee to get that down low shot, making them look high up on the food chain. And in truth they are. They are right bellow staff. If you look closely I have my own little section someplace in the bottom.
I think that yearbook is helping with the preparation for the dance. Along with the volleyball team, the newspaper, and of coarse me. So around fifteen students not including student council. With the council its more like, I'd say twenty.
The twenty of us are meeting up in the gym after school so in about, two hours. We have the party in the gym and cafeteria, gym for the actual dance and cafeteria for food and drinks. They are close and I think we are having some chips and punch in the gym.
School ends and we have our meeting. We have the student body president, Benjamin Thomas, his brother Charlie, Trinity Churchill, James Smith, and Sam Ramsey, the student reps. The treasurer is Alex Cox, and the secretary Tommy Mathes.
There is yearbook, Juliana Peacock, Paige Gibson, Donnie Lopez, Tiny Tim Whinerman, and Nolan Gary. Paige, Tim, and Nolan edit the stuff, and Donnie helps with photography and a little editing.
We have some of the girls volley ball team, Aza Maynard, Elizabeth Ramsey, Destiny Robbinson, and her half sister Alessa Macy. I haven't been to a volleyball game so I don't know the positions, but I do know that Ella serves up a really mean spike.
Newspaper is small. There is only three people there. We have the editor Levi Weimar, the writer and star soccer player Colt, "the Bolt" Jackson, and Manager, David Stevenson.
Then there is the writing club. With me.
Ben starts talking about how we need to be cooperative. We need to help each other when we finish, and how we need this done by tomorrow. Then he assigns roles. Yearbook gets streamers, newspaper gets cleaning duty, volleyball gets the banners, and writing gets... balloons.
The student body supervises and helps when needed.
Ben ends the meeting with, "Lets get to work, the fish bowl didn't pick you for nothing!" I honestly don't know if he's joking or not.
So I have to blow up near two hundred balloons. I've got twenty balloons James comes over and asks how things are doing.
"Calem, you do know there's a tube thingy right there?" He points over at the bleachers and there it is. One of those tubes where you push the pole in and it blows up a balloon.
I get to about one twenty when Ben says we have to go. I guess I have to come here early.
I walk out the door and there's Juliana. She has her camera and she's cycling threw photos when she says hi. I don't know how to react. A girl never says hi to me. So I tuck my head into my shoulders and wave hello with my hand up to my hip, and she laughs! She laughs at me being awkward. Then she come over.
"Hey. Your the kid in writing club right?" She asks.
"Yeah, why do you ask?"
"Just trying to get to know people." She says.
"Honestly... Same." I say
"Well it's good to make a new friend." she waves as she says goodbye.
I don't know how to react. A girl thinks of me as a friend. Then something dawned on me. Something that really hurt me.
I just got friend zoned.
