Mia
Song: Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody
Holy shit! Holy shit! HOLY SHIT!!! Never again! I am never going on another date with him! What the hell was that? How could I have shown that side of me? I never act shy around people! I’m cool, confident, will beat you to a bleeding pulp, but in front of Lucas I acted like a love sick school girl for a good half of the date. Fuck I’m calling it a date! I’m never eating anything Brysiese gives me again! It’s her fault! It was her idea!
“Mom! I have a problem!” I called. I ran through the house not even bothering to take off my shoes as I dumped the toys in the hall next to my bedroom door. “MOM!”
My stepmom came out of the living room with a weight in her hand. “Hey kid. How’d the date go?”
I groaned and ended up dramatically falling into her chest. “I think I got found out,” I mumbled.
Ma pulled me back so she could look at me better. “You what? Mia I can’t understand you when you mumble.”
I could feel my eyes start to tear up. “I think Lucas is starting to figure out about me liking him!”
She perked up at that. “So you do like him! Your mom owes me ten bucks,” she exclaimed. “This is such good news!”
I looked up at her like she was an alien. “How could you say that?! I can’t like him! Anyone but him!”
She shrugged and went into the living room with me close to her heel. “I don’t see what the problem is,” she said. “From what Brysiese said, he’s a pretty good student, gets good grade, comes from a nice family, is athletic. Seems to me like it’s the perfect first crush.” she sat down on the couch and continued her weight workout.
“Ma!” I whined and flopped down next to her. “He not just that! He’s impulsive-”
“Like you,” she interrupted.
“And he flirts with every girl he can,” I continued.
“Like you with the guys at the bakery.”
“That is strictly business.” I glared at her over my glasses. “He is always trying to get me to kiss him. He’s dated half the girls in school, and he’s . . .” I stopped trying to find something else I can complain about him.
She just smirked at me. “Sounds to me that’s all you got on him.”
I sat back on the couch. “He’s a pain in my ass as well,” I huffed.
She laughed at that. “You think you aren’t a pain in the butt?” she said in between giggles. “I think he’s perfect for you!”
“Thel!” I groaned and covered my face with a pillow. How the fuck did I not even know until today? He looked so cute trying to win that toy for me just because I like it, and to see him pout when he failed was pretty funny too. “I don’t want to trigger my story.”
My mom sighed and set down the weight before pulling me into her arms. “Sweetheart, you have to accept the way you were born.” she started petting my head. “You’re a Main. Your story began the day you were born.”
“But why him? I don’t even like him, yet I feel like spending my life with him.”
She shrugged. “It just happens like that sometimes. To be honest I didn’t like your mom when we first met.”
I shifted to look up her. “That’s impossible. You guys are practically all over eachother.”
“We are now, but when I avoided your mother like the plague after we met,” Ma said with a smile.
I sat up and scooted closer. “Why?”
“Well, she was married to your father for one,”she started. “The other thing was simply because I thought she was too good to be with me even after they separated, but I guess fate had a different view on us.”
“What happened after that?”
“Well.” she stood up with a smile. “Your mom decided to corner me to confess her own feelings and the rest you know as history.”
“Really? Mom confessed first?” I asked in surprise.
My stepmom laughed. “Funny right?! She walked right up to me, pulled us into an empty office and just confessed! I thought I was dreaming!”
Wow, I never thought my birthmom would have the guts to do that. She was always a little quiet lady that always made you feel at home when you entered, inviting you to make cookies and other treats with her as she happily listened to you talk about your day. “I guess even mom goes with her heart,” I mumbled under my breath.
We heard the door slam shut as footsteps made their way to the living room. “Baby! I found a monkey in the hall!” I heard her shout. In she came with the stuffed monkey I won in her arms. “Isn't he just the cutest thing?” She lifted the giant stuffed toy up as to show her wife the full effect of its charm. “There are even more stuffies in the hall!”
“Welcome home mom,” I said with a smile. I really do love her. How can you not love a lady that still gets excited over stuffed animals?
“Mia! Mia! Look!” she shook the monkey a little. “It's an orangutan!”
Ma and I both chuckled at her. She looked like a little kid at Christmas. “I won it at the amusement park Lucas and I went to,” I said. “You can have it if you want.”
I have always wondered if my mother was fully mature mentally for her age;I don't think she is. Her eyes lit up with excitement before going to concern. “Are you sure sweety?” she asked. Back to mom mode.
I shrugged, and leaned into the couch to get comfy. I could see my stepmom behind my mother shaking her head no and waving her hand across her neck. I ignored her. “Mom, if you want the monkey you can have it,” I said. “I have more prizes to enjoy, the least I can do is give one to my mom.”
Thel slapped her hand over her eyes and gave a silent groan, while my other mom jumped up and down with excitement. “I shall name him . . . . Sir Squishington III!” Thel dramatically fell to the floor from mom’s declaration. Mom quickly turned to her. “Baby, you okay?”
“I’m good,” said the woman on the floor.
