Silver was curled up on the couch, a bowl of popcorn that he slowly ate in his lap, wide eyes stuck on the television. His roommate, Sonic, came in and sat on the couch next to him, raising an eye ridge at what was on.
“Really?” Sonic asked, catching Silver’s attention.
“Really what?” Silver asked unknowingly.
“You watching this? Again? For, what? The sixth time?” the azure asked, shaking his head and making small hand movements.
Silver blinked. He glanced the the movie and back to Sonic. “Yeah?”
It was Sonic’s turn to stare. He then sighed softly and shook his head, pulling out his phone and going to random game apps to entertain himself. A sudden ‘bing’ went off on the azures phone and an instant smile came to his lips. Silver looked from the corner of his eye and watched Sonic open the tap that lead to text messages. The name ‘Ames <3’ written at the top. The albino mentally sighed and looked back at the tv, not in the mood for the movie or popcorn anymore, knowing Sonic was going to leave shortly to go hang with his girlfriend.
And, as Silver knew, his roommate stood up and walked out the house without a single word said to the other. Silver sat on the couch for another moment, listening to Sonic’s car roar and purr become distant. Amber orbs shifted to the ground. He turned off the tv and set the popcorn on the end table, hugging his legs close to his chest. Silver’s had a crush on Sonic for years now and hates it every time he leaves to go hang with Amy.
A loud clap of thunder and flash of lightning caught Silver off guard, making him snap his head and perked ears to the window, watching the heavy pourdown of rain. Silver sighed heavily and slowly got up, just as slowly going up the stairs to his bedroom. He opened his door, not bothering to close it nor turn on the lights, and fell face-first onto the bed. The albino stuffed his face into a pillow and let the small stream of tears fall. His sniffles were muffled through the sound of the rain hitting the window.
Amber eyes moved out from the pillow, cheeks becoming red and puffy, and stared out the window, seeing only rain. The pang in his chest seemed to bloom, the pain becoming worse and worse, the more he thought of Sonic and how he’ll never get to be with him making it harder to breath. Silver choked on a sob. All his life, all he wanted was to feel loved. The albino slowly sat up on his bed, pulling out his phone and pulling up a picture of Sonic. They were on a school trip and Amy was trying to catch up with them, and Silver caught a picture of Sonic before he glomped by his girlfriend. They hung out together the whole day, but it was still always Amy, Amy, Amy. He was practically invisible to the other. And it was then that he came to realizations with reality.
Silver stared at the photo blankly. He shook his head and looked elsewhere. He stared out the window again, though there was a light. A small, dotted, white, shining light. He stared at it. It seemed ... hypnotizing. He just couldn’t take his eyes away from it. The albino slid down onto the bed and laid there, arm stretched out with his resting head on it, other hand hold the phone with Sonic's picture close to his chest. The light got brighter the more he stared. This feeling began to bloom in Silver’s chest and he felt … happy. He didn’t know what it was, but felt good to have this feeling. Butterflies fluttered in his stomach and his mind eased over in a numb conscious. A smile crept over peach lips. He felt free.
Then everything went dark.
The front door opened and closed shut. Sonic had a fast paced heart rate. He thought that everything would be ruined from the pouring rain but it wasn’t. The memory still ran through his head. The dimm lightly making her shine even more beautiful. Her jade eyes gave off the happy aura that made Sonic smile. And how she squealed when Sonic got down on one knee and opened that oh-so-special box.
Sonic sighed and stared up to the ceiling. He started fluttering around the house, going to the living room to tell his roommate everything about his night. The azure came up short when he didn’t find Silver in the living room. He knew the movie lasted too long and would just be ending at this point. And Silver always watched it until the credits were done.
“Silver?” Sonic called, worry starting to prick at his mind. When there was no returning call, the azure frowned deeply. Emerald eyes looked around, seeing Silver nowhere. He made his way upstairs and saw his door creaked open. A small smile came to his lips as he knew the other was going to fall asleep from the movie and came to bed instead.
Sonic leaned against the frame and cracked the door open a little more to peer inside. The albino hedgehog was lying on his bed vertically, from Sonic’s position, with one arm outstretched and one close to his chest. The azure saw the light from the phone in Silver’s hand and mentally chuckled at him. He carefully walked in to get said device, knowing Silver would hate an uncharged phone in the morning. As Sonic reached for Silver’s phone, he noticed something that made him freeze.
Silver never sleeps with his eyes open.
“Silver?” Sonic called with the most worry. He reached to shake his roommate’s shoulder, setting his hand on the bed for balance, not caring about the wet feeling under his hand.
“Silver,” Sonic called again, shaking Silver’s shoulder many times, the pull and push getting more harsh each time. Panic rose and clogged Sonic’s throat. He was past worried and not sat on utmost terror level. His lip trembled and began vigorously looking around. His eyes landed on the blood his hand sat on, and pocket knife in the albino’s chest.
“Silver!” Sonic shouted with tears cascading down his face, shaking him even more and turning him on his back. The action had moved Silver’s sleeve of his long-sleeve shirt, showing off the black mark on his arm. Sonic’s stopped, knowing he was far too late to save his friend. The mark on his arm caught the emerald’ attention.
With many shaky breaths trying to steady, he carefully pushed himself up. Two hesitant hands reached to Silver’s arm, one grabbing his wrist while the other pulled down the sleeve. On Silver’s arm in thick black sharpie was written ‘NO LOVE’.
Sonic stared at with confusion. He gave love to Silver ever since they met in foster care. He treated him like a brother and wouldn’t do anything without him. Why would he do something so ridiculous. It was then that Sonic noticed the picture on the phone. It was him. He was smiling to the camera on the beach. He remembered that day so clearly. The reason was because they had actually spent to most time together then. They were inseparable. They sat next to each other when playing ‘truth or dare’ with their friends, always did a dare when one got one. Hell, they shared their meals with each other.
“Silver,” Sonic whispered, looking over his brothers dead face. A gentle hand reached up and stroked a delicate cheek. A single tear drifted down Sonic’s cheek and onto Silver’s. The azure took in a final shaky breath before reaching up, closing his little brother’s eyes. “Sleep well,” he choked out with a soft smile, just like every night.
Sonic slowly let himself drop down and lay next to Silver, a hand across his upper stomach, arm grazing the knife plunged in the albino’s chest. “Goodnight Silver,” he repeated, waiting for his brother to say it back. But there was no answer.
