I Am Not Who You Think I Am

Badmouthing His Stepmother

Badmouthing His Stepmother

Sep 17, 2017

Ever since Drake accepted the fact that I'm a guy we have gotten so much closer. I've been sitting with his friends at lunch and after school I tutor him in Algebra 3. His mother still doesn't like me, but his Dad is way cool.

"I don't want you here." I heard his mother say from down the stairs, "Get the hell out of my house and go back with your stupid little friends." I looked at Drake, who was staring at his closed door in confusion.

"I don't know who she's talking to." Drake said, "And I hope it's not you. Besides, this is Dad's house, he won't let her kick you out. I swear, she is the worst stepmother ever." I blinked.

"She's your stepmother?" I asked, "You never told me that."

"Well, she's been with my Dad since I was seven." Drake said, "She sort of raised me, but she's not my Mom."

"What happened to your Mom?" I asked and then realized how insensitive I was being, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked that."

"It's okay." Drake said, "She died when I was four. I barely knew her."

"It must be hard on your Dad." I said.

"Yeah, it is." Drake said. Drake's phone started going off. We looked at each other for a moment and then looked at it. His Dad was calling.

"Well, aren't you going to pick it up?" I asked, when Drake just stared at his phone.

"Yeah." Drake said and he picked it up, "Hi, Dad. What's up?"

"Son, I need you to somehow get Vicky out of the house." his Dad said through the phone, "She went over the line and told my Sister to leave. She knows that your Aunt Margret is welcome here anytime. Just get her out, I'm done with her."

"Where will she go?" Drake asked.

"With a guy she's been cheating on me with." Drake's Dad said.

"Okay. Got it." Drake said and hung up the phone. He looked at me. "Help me with this, Nick."

"Of course." I said, slightly happy. Not that I should've been happy, but she was mean to me.

Soon, we got Vicky or whatever her name was out of the house and Drake's Dad came home.

"We're over." Drake's Dad said to the lady, "You're not allowed here anymore. I'm sick of your lies. Go to the asshole you cheated on me with, I don't care which one. Just go." The lady stood there in tears, as if he would let her back if she cried. "Get off my property."

"What about my things?" she asked.

"I'll mail them to you." Drake's Dad said, "Just get off my property and never come back."

"But..." the lady asked.

"Go." Drake's Dad said. She finally left and Drake and I were relieved.

"Wow." Drake said, "Finally got that negative person out of our lives, huh, Dad?" Drake's Dad looked at his son and smiled.

"Yes." he said, "She is gone."

"Let's go inside." Drake said.

"Yeah, let's celebrate." Drake's Dad said, "You too, Nick."

"Thank you, Mr. Horner." I said.

"You're like a part of the family now, kid." Drake's Dad said, "There's no turning back."

"Even if I'm a guy?" I asked.

"Then, I'd consider you my second son." Drake's Dad said. I smiled.

"Now..." Drake said, "Does anyone know how to use the oven to make pizza?" His Dad laughed.

"It's easy, Drake" his Dad said, "Let me show you." While Drake and his Dad were working the oven, I drank two entire water bottles and used the bathroom. I texted my parents that I'd be eating at Drake's again and Dad texted me 'Mom bought a lot of condoms, do you guys use them?' I felt really awkward, but texted him 'give me some just in case'.

"Nick, why is your face so red?" Drake asked.

"I..." I muttered, "Condoms..." Drake looked at me funny and then started blushing too.

"Yeah..." Drake said, "Um..."

"What are you guys talking about?" his Dad asked as he walked over after about a minute of us not saying anything, "And why are your faces so red?" He looked between Drake and I. "I'm guessing that it's better if I don't ask."

"Yeah." Drake said.

"So, the pizza is ready, do you guys want to dig in?" Drake's Dad said.

"Sure." Drake and I said in unison and all three of us, his Dad included, sat at the table and started eating pizza.
