I sat in their living room wrapped in a blanket with a steaming cup of chamomile tea. I couldn't pretend I didn't see what I saw, this all felt crazy and surreal, but I decided to hear them out. They all sat in front of me, letting me take them all in and keep watch of their positions. Everyone looked eager to show me exactly what they were, everyone but Felix, he looked annoyed. Lex had let me relax a bit, helped me get comfortable. Now I guess it was time.
"Alright, it might be a bit difficult to show you some of our gifts, so I'll try and explain as best as I can." Lex said scooting a bit closer to me. "Aiden is what we call a Shade, they can disappear and reappear somewhere else, in their own ways. Some can go invisible, some turn into the shadows on the ground, Aiden happens to turn into smoke." He stared at me a moment to be sure I was listening. I wore a blank face, inside I was freaking out but I didn't want them to see.
He cleared his throat and continued. "Ari is what we call an Augmentor, he can amplify our abilities or physical strengths, making us more powerful-"
"Makes you more powerful?" I ask raising my hand a bit. "More powerful how?"
"Basically I'm the steroid of the magic world, I give them an edge, primarily in battle." Ari said with a boyish grin. My mind was stuck on battle.
"I'm sorry, did you just say battle?"
Lex gave him a hard look, reprimanding his little brother for his loose tongue.
"It doesn't matter, not relevant." Lex cut in. "As I was saying. Logan and Liam are a bit different than us because they're twins. They are each others missing halves, together they make up a single power, but since they're still individuals they have the same amount of power as they would if they weren't twins. Meaning when they come together they're very powerful. They're an Elemental, Logan is fire and earth, and Liam is water and air."
"Ok... quick question, which one is Logan and which one is Liam?" I never could tell them apart. Everything about them was identical.
"Logan is taller..." Ari added quietly.
"I don't think she's gonna see an inch difference when she looks at them Ari." Aiden said with a deadpan expression.
"I like blue, it's always on me somehow. Same goes for him with red." Liam chimed in nudging Logan with his arm. I looked him up and down, he was wearing normal looking clothes, but blue was strewn all through it, Logan was the same with red.
"Ok, that actually helps." I said and motioned for Lex to continue.
"Felix is what is known as a Crafter. He can make virtually anything, but he can... lace it with magical properties called glyphs." He said.
"What kind of magical properties?" I asked.
Felix stood after Aiden practically shoved him in my direction. He squatted down in front of me showing me a big silver ring on his finger. It looked like a plain old signet style ring, but the symbol on it was a bit strange. It was one solid line down with two lines close together striking through the middle of it, a single dot sat just above those lines on the right. He slowly reached up and gave the symbol a tap. It started unwinding like a little machine, little cogs and gears shifting into new positions, I had tensed up at the sudden movement but sat still where I was, watching it turn into something else. When it finished rearranging itself, Felix was holding a small knife about 4 inches long. The symbol that was on the ring was on the hilt in a small circle. He handed the knife to me and I sat there moving it around in my hands. I pressed the little symbol and it began to shift and change again. Within seconds I was holding a simple signet ring in my hand. Felix gently took it from me and slid it back onto his finger.
"You made that?" I said weakly. He nodded.
"Crafters have a unique ability to think of things that no one else can, engineers can only see some possibilities when it comes to piecing things together but Crafters see so much more." Lex said with a smile. I was letting my guard down and he knew it. I sat up straight and pulled my face back into the blank expression I had been wearing. His smile fell a little.
"That's impressive." I said shifting in my seat a bit. "So what do you do?" I asked looking at Lex, he looked a little uneasy.
"I'm what people call a Hypnotist. I can trap someone with my eyes so that they remain still, and then when I speak they obey."
My mind flashed to earlier when he calmed me into sleep. Was that what happened? I knew I felt funny, but I didn't suspect mind control.
"It's not mind control" He said firmly. I blanched. Could he read my mind?
"That's what everyone says it is, but it's not. I don't have to read minds to know that's what you're wondering." He gave a halfhearted smile. "I don't control your thoughts or force you into anything, my power is a power of persuasion, some people can resist it if they know it's happening or their will power is strong enough, not many though." He was looking at his feet. He didn't like what he did much, maybe he felt he took advantage of people's minds or maybe it was something he'd been criticized for his whole life.
"I'm guessing your power isn't well liked." I stated. He nodded ever so slightly. He was a strong guy, I was starting to get a glimpse into why he was.
"Ok... say I believe you and I'm not just going insane. What does this have to do with me?" I finally ask the question I've been dying to know.
"That's probably something I should explain." A woman said as she entered the room.
Tall and thin. Dyed hair.
"Kirstie?"
