“Ah! Hello! You must be the new student, Reagan, am I correct?” A small petite blonde lady asked me from the reception desk. The reception seemed nice and friendly enough.
“Yes, that’s me.” I replied tucking my hair behind my ear, a nervous reaction, I was inherently an anxious person.
“Right, here is your timetable and I will call someone to show you around quickly.” She had asked a pretty girl with black hair, to show me my new school and to my first lesson.
She smiled and held out a hand, I shook it politely, though how do you shake a hand politely? I shook my head silencing my thoughts, I as nervous.
“I’m Mary.” She said. “Looking forward to your first day at Lunavard High?”
“Yup!” I managed to sound as enthusiastic as I could. Of course, I was looking forward to starting a new school for the tenth time. I was being sarcastic.
“I better warn you about our school, the hierarchy, there’s these ten boys, all in different years, only two in our year mind you… but they all stick together, and if you know them you’re top notch special… even the normal popular squad aren’t with them… they are odd to say the least and then you have the normal popular people, some are okay some are not so. Then there’s everyone else like me.”
“And me.” I added.
“I like you!” She laughed.
I hoped I could stay long enough in one place this time, long enough to make friends, to earn my qualifications. That this time I wouldn’t have to move again. I’d never stayed in one place, I was constantly being moved from school to school, hopefully my parents stayed this time. But I wasn’t counting my luck.
“So this is your class, for literature, I’m right down the hall, I’ll meet you after, since you have science with me for second period, good luck!”
I nodded and walked into the classroom, the teacher, Mr Matthews a young man, late twenties, with blonde hair and blue eyes and glasses, introduced me to the class and sat me down on the end of the second row, next to the window.
I started walking down to my seat, my heart stopped, my breathing stopped when I noticed who I would be sitting next too, a boy… not because of his beauty had my heart stopped, which yes, he was beautiful, but I now understood what she meant about the ten boys being odd. Because this boy was a mage. One of the magi.
And I was on the magi blacklist. Because for one I wasn’t supposed to exist. And for another they wanted to either kill me, or make me join them, and I wasn’t sure which I wanted.
But also, this boy was the same I always dreamt about, whether I was dying in his arms or kissing him. There he was real. And I wanted nothing to do with him.
I had walked straight into the mouth of hell, half of me wanted to turn around and run out of the classroom, the school, run anywhere. I couldn’t get found. I contemplated ringing my mum and she’d automatically take me out, and to a new school.
I jumped slightly as I was handed a two books, the play Romeo and Juliet and my school book. I wrote my name onto the school book, Reagan Gale.
But I had a small glimmer of hope, I didn’t want to run anymore. I didn’t want to hide. I wanted a normal life, of friends, falling in love, getting a job.
I’d have to keep it a secret. I’d have to keep everything I knew safe. Me. I couldn’t let this mage know about me. He might have already sensed my magic in my veins, but I hoped he hadn’t. Then again. The way he stared. I shook my head sitting down in my seat. I’d play dumb, not know anything. I’d like for once to not get into trouble and have to leave another school.
No way was I running anymore.
The class started at a normal speed, and I actually thought life would love me and let me breath and rest. We were learning about Romeo and Juliet, star-crossed lovers, bound too each other, in life and in death.
At the end of the class I made my way to the exit, among many of the many other students piling out of the small doorway, when I tripped over nothing. I could see myself falling to the ground, I had slowed the time down, and was about to put my hands out to stop making a fool out of myself and hitting the ground, when strong arms wrapped around my waist, the lights above shattered as I burned up, tingles and my magic running through my body.
Glass sprinkled down everywhere, leaving the classroom in semi darkness, apart from the sun coming through the windows. Whoever had grabbed me pulled me into him to cover me from the glass.
I could smell his scent, it smelt homely like wood burning or smores, like warmth on a snowy day.
“Ah! Sorry class, must have been faulty lights! We’ll get that checked immediately.” The teacher informed. “Is anyone harmed?”
Murmurs of "I'm fine" and "no one seems hurt" were said.
I knew otherwise, that had been my magic, playing up, as soon as he had grabbed me, I looked up at the guy… The mage. That had not been faulty lights. I sighed, what a brilliant start to my day
“Are you okay? You need to be more careful.” He whispered to me.
“I think… I’ll try.” I mumbled. I was in shock. My heart was racing. As soon as he let go I ran out to the bathroom. I stared at my suddenly pale face, trying to calm down so my magic didn't cause more hassle. I managed to get rid of any glass from my hair and look less insane.
Now I'd find Mary again. Luckily she happened to be right outside the girls bathroom.
"I heard about what happened and figured you'd be here." She smiled.
"Oh my God, thanks!"
We walked to class together, both in deep thought, thinking about different things. It was a somewhat awkward silence.
"So my friends and I are having a movie night on friday. You wanna join?" She spoke up.
"If that's okay with you and your friends?" I drummed my fingers against my bag.
She nodded. "Of course it is! They'll love you!"
I smiled. I would have friends for once, be in a friendship group. Go to sleepovers and hang out in towns. Maybe? I sincerely hoped.
"Here we are! This is biology, we're learning about habitats and such to give you a heads up."
I thanked her, the teacher was middle aged woman perhaps late forties, with dark skin and dark hair and eyes, she looked friendly enough but I knew plenty of teachers who seemed nice at first glance but as you got to know them weren't 'nice'.
The teacher greeted me with a smile. "I'm Dr Lacy. You can seat where you wish too, and here's your workbook and your science book for this lesson."
I did my thank you's and sat next to Mary. We worked together fitting animals into habitats and discussing the environments in which animals needed for their habitats. Overall it wasn't a bad lesson.
I glanced at my timetable... Maths was after form and a break, I groaned, then lunch art and lastly history. Still it wasn't bad.
When the bell rang I hadn't been expecting an hour to have passed already. This day was going by too quickly, because before I knew it I was stepping through the doorway to my home...
