Royce looked at the hills outside the car window as they whisked by, fleeting memories of picturesque landscapes. His phone was dead, his books already read and the midday light prevented him from lying back and going to bed. He suddenly wondered what he looked like, a red car speeding through serene countryside with a semi-comatose teenager named Royce staring out the window. His mother, named Italia, driving a jabbering on about the wonderful new town they are moving to. What a scene, he thought.
"Ooh! Royce, look! We're almost here." his mother exclaimed with sincere excitement. "The Valley. You know, I was originally from here."
"I know mom. You've told me." Royce gazed out at the sign marking the city limits, an elaborate cobblestone wall with 'Welcome to the Valley!' on it. No slogan, only a welcome.
"I wonder who they are?" asked Edward Bell, gazing at the passing red car and its passengers as he absentmindedly ate gelato from a plastic cup with a cute pink spoon.
"Royce and Italia Jay. They are moving into the house next to yours. Royce is our age and will be attending Sandy High School when the school year starts. He's cute and you will think so too." answered Eliza Fairweather, Edward's almost neighbor (she lives only 3 blocks away) and best friend. She laughed loudly at Edward's annoyed reaction and took a large spoonful of gelato from Edward's cup and mixed it with her own. "And they're coming this way! Probably to ask directions."
"From who? There's no one around." asked Edward, looking at the deserted streets of a Wednesday 2:00. He suddenly realized the answer to that question with Eliza's incredulous look just as Italia parked the car next to Edward and Eliza.
"Hello! I'm sorry, I used to live here, but the town's changed so much. Can you possibly tell me how to get to Larchmont Avenue?" Italia leaned slightly out of the rolled down car window, squinting in the harsh midday sunlight and thinking about change, new gelato places and the old grocery that used to be there.
"Certainly, and welcome back! I'm afraid I don't quite know the way from here. A good amount of roads are closed due to a recent earthquake. I hate to ask, but have you tried looking it up?" Edward looked past Italia to the boy his age sitting in the passenger seat. His hair was dark as raven's dreams and his skin was a wonderful light chestnut and his eyes even darker than his hair. To put it simply, he was cute.
"I tried, but my phone won't turn on. I don't know what's wrong, I dropped it during the drive and well..." Italia, like most parents of her age, didn't have the technical know-how to diagnose the problems with her phone.
"You know, Edward's pretty good with fixing phones, and I'm sure he wouldn't mind taking a look." Bell glanced at Edward, who snapped out of his Royce-induced trance. He nodded, a little unsure what he just agreed to, but took Italia's phone when it was handed to him.
"Mom, you shouldn't just-" whispered Royce sharply as this was how phones were stolen! His words of warning were interrupted by a chirp from Italia's phone signifying it was turning on. Edward gave the phone back to it's owners, smiled and shot a glare at Eliza. She grinned back and took another bite of Edward's gelato.
"Oh! Thank you so much! Edward was it?" Italia opened her phone and punched in her new address. "Me and son, Royce (say hi Royce!) are moving in town. I'm sure we'll see you around and thank you so much!" She lightly pressed the gas pedal and drove off to her new house, leaving the two teens and their empty gelato cups.
