Alex steps up behind it, kneels down and stabs it in the head, pulling it off the girl by its bloody shirt, grunting from the weight. Alex is the only one I told about their weakness, he's the only one that could know how to kill it.
"Listen up everyone!" I yell, trying to be loud enough so that everyone can hear me through the growls. "They can only die if you stab them in the head! Nowhere else hurts them!" Everyone looks at me confused but they understand what I'm saying, and focus their attempts to stabbing them in the heads instead of in the chest or stomach.
I quickly move out of the way as the one that was at the back lunges towards me, with blood foaming out of its mouth and reeking of a smell that almost makes me throw up. It screams at me with wide, yellow eyes and frantically tries to bite me, but being held back by my arms just seems to make it even more furious.
While holding its shoulders with my knife in my right hand, somehow I managed to reposition the knife so that it's pointing under its ear. I know that if I let go, it'll be able to bite me, so instead, I shake it from side to side until the knife pushes through the soft skin under its ear, angled to the brain.
Unfortunately, the knife didn't go deep enough to do much damage, so now it's just walking around with my knife sticking out of the side of its head, not knowing what to do. Desperate to get the only thing that I could defend myself with back, I kick it in the stomach, pushing it backwards and quickly pushing the knife further into its skull.
It collapses onto the floor, in a pool of blood, so I pull the knife back out, wipe it on its clothes and return it to my belt. I turn around and see that two of them had already been taken care of, and the third had been slowly making its way to the younger children, drawn to them by their screaming and crying.
Somehow it had managed to slip past me and the others who were fighting without being noticed and now threatened to kill the ones who I had taken an unspoken oath to protect. I run towards it as fast as I can, my knife raised to my eye level, screaming from rage. Just before I reach it, I jump, landing with my knife sticking out of the top of its head.
It falls forwards with me on top of it, still holding onto the handle of the knife. I look around for the older kids who weren't fighting, who should've been protecting the younger ones, and see them crouched around the girl who'd been bitten, who was screaming from the pain while trying to stop the blood gushing out of her arm.
I slowly crouch next to her, staring at her wounds. Before Alex managed to kill it, it took a large bite into her stomach, breaking the skin with its teeth, leaving it bleeding uncontrollably. She looks up at me desperately, with a look saying 'Please save me!'
I look around at the group surrounding her, all looking at me with the same, helpless expression. She grabs my arm and says, with a weak voice, "Please...just look after my brother..."
I hold her hand for comfort her with tears in my eyes, knowing that it wouldn't have happened to her if she didn't come with us. It's all my fault. "Don't worry, I will. I promise."
