Grepearl let out a furious roar as Osuushigann rose from the ground. Steam bellowed from its snout as it pawed the ground, ready to fight my friend.
"You think you can just humiliate me like that!" Grepearl shouted. "No one embarrasses the great Grepearl and lives!"
"Yes, because you're so big and bad." Viral taunted, laughing a bit as he stepped closer.
"I am!" More steam was forced out. "I am Captain Grepearl, one of the four powerful captains of the Dark Spiral Army!"
"Dark Spirals?" Viral laughed some more. "Now that's a laugh! Grepearl, I have done thing far worse than you can even imagine."
"Oh really? Those are big words coming from someone in that scrap heap of a gunman!"
"I'll have you know that Enki and I were once the right hand man to Lordgenome, the greatest Spiral King in all the land. He gave me a body that would never end and a mind that would never cease to hold knowledge. I've been alive for years, longer than you ever will, and in those years I have fought back, I have traveled the whole globe! I've even pierced the heavens themselves and seen different worlds beyond your wildest dreams!"
"You're lying!" Osuushigann stomped the ground. "My master told me that there's only one Beastman who's ever done any of that!"
"And I am that Beastman!" Enki drew all four swords, ready for action and meaning business. "My name is Viral and I am the protector of these humans! I've always waited for the day when I would be able to fight again and today is that day! So tell me Grepearl, will you give me the fight that I've been waiting for?"
"Oh I'll give you a fight alright!" Osuushigann charged forward, horns pointed at Enki. "And I'll make sure that it's your last!"
"Come on!" I shouted, pushing and pulling on the levers again inside of Gurren Lagann, frantically trying to get him back up, but nothing seemed to work. Besides my communication screen, the cockpit was dark and growing more hopeless by the second. I kept going at it until my arms grew sore, heavy from fatigue.
"YOU. SON. OF. A. BOLT!" I started shouted with each push and pull. "WORK!" I screamed, throwing all my weight against the levers. They pushed back, slamming me into the chair. My anger overcame me and I started slamming my fist against the control panel, together in unison as my fist became more and more bruised. After a few seconds into my tantrum, I slammed them down for the final time, along with my forehead. The darkness around me felt as if it was growing larger by the second as I sat there, head hung in shame and disbelief. Was this how this was going to end, me failing at the one job I had to do.
You know, screaming at him isn't going to do anything. The voice in my head said to me. It's not going to get you anywhere.
"Oh shut up!" I shouted back, my voice briefly echoing around me. "Like you even understand what's happening!"
But I do Inoichi. the voice replied. It sounded slightly calm and knowledgeable, as if it's done this before.
I took a deep breath, trying to slow my racing heart. "And how do you? How do you know what I'm feeling right now?"
Just close your eyes and I will quickly tell you. It answered.
Close my eyes? I'm in the middle of a battlefield and it wants me to close my eyes? I wanted to go against it, but what other choice did I have right now? It seemed like the only logical thing at the moment. I leaned back, taking a deep breath, and closed my eyes.
I felt a sudden rush over me, as if my mind was leaving my body. I opened my eyes, and I arrived back in that room from not to long ago, where I was floating in the blue tinted void with the dark green spirals spinning all around me. I was confused, yet relaxed to be back. But my feeling of safety was taken from me when I quickly when I looked ahead of me and noticed him. He was dressed in a long and rather old looking dusty black cloak. It shrouded his body in mystery, only revealing an elderly face under the hood. He hair was mostly grey, appear to be a deep black color at the tips. He stared at me with his eyes, on a solid black and the other yellow with a spiral pattern, smiling at me from only a few feet away. His smile was comforting, making me feel safe again.
"Are you-" I started saying.
"Yes." He answered. "I am, in fact, the voice in your head. My name is Simon."
"Simon?" I was shocked. "I've heard of you. You've saved the world tons of time right."
"Twice yes." He replied. "And I see that it is your turn."
"My turn?"
"Yes. The drill you hold is very powerful Inoichi." He started walking toward me. A staff appeared in his hand, helping him walk as he drew closer. Yet, my eyes were fixed on the small diamond ring that appeared around his neck when he got closer.
"I can tell." I crossed my arms when he was only three or four feet away from me. "It helped me turn on the rob-I mean the Gunman."
"It is in fact the key to powering Gurren Lagann." Simon reassured me. "But it can do far more than that. However, we can not focus on that. As of now, we must only focus on you."
"But why Simon? Why did you choose me of all people?" I clenched my fist, ready to pound him.
"Because of that." He answered. "That right there."
"What?"
"The fire in your heart of course." He smiled again, looking at me with warm eyes.
"Well this fire isn't helping me right now because the damn thing won't move!" I started tearing up, shaking my head, trying to keep myself from crying. "And if I don't get him to move, everyone will die Simon!"
"That's because you're using the wrong energy to power him." Simon kneeled down to my eye level, resting his other hand on my shoulder. He wiped the tears from my eyes, smiling at me ever much more.
"What energy am I supposed to use then?" I asked him. "Is there some kind of giant mechanical battery that I'm suppose to charge or something?"
"You have it all wrong Inoichi. The power isn't external. It's internal, inside of you and that big heart of your's."
I was speechless. What did he mean?
"When you first started fighting," Simon started to say, "you were driven to fight with the sight of victory in your mind, am I right? But as soon as you felt like you couldn't do it, that is when you were losing power. Gurren Lagann can't run on negative emotions because negative emotions don't drive you to be the best you can be."
I wiped my face, trying to understand what he was saying. "So I'm just losing because I think I'm losing?"
"Precisely Inoichi." Simon reassured me. "Gurren Lagann runs on Spiral Energy, and Spiral Energy can only come forth when you keep fighting and you keep believing that you can do it! You have to keep that fighting spirit alive! You have to know what you're fighting for and keep fighting for it until your last breath! You have to take whatever powers are acting against you and you have to fight them and fight back harder than ever! When the darkness and the evils of this world make you feel alone, you must gather what you have and together, you will win! You must fight Inoichi!"
"I have to fight!" I answered him. "I have to fight back! I can't give up! I have too!"
The void around me started to glow, the spirals changing to a light green and spinning madly around me. I felt a sudden chill was over me, feeling welcoming and empowering. Simon stood up, smiling at me, the spiral in his eye glowing bright as he started stepping back. He smiled at me, I smiled back even wider.
"We shall meet like this again soon Inoichi." He stated. "But as of right now, there is a fight you should be getting back to. Plus, someone's waiting for you on the other side."
