I could hear an annoying sound coming near the left side of me, it was the same ringing I hear every day at this hour. Stretching my hand to find the one making the noise I grab it and start pressing the buttons to make my phone go quietly. It was automatic for my hand but now the bigger problem comes into play, getting up to start my day. It was about five in the morning and I had to forcefully raise my body out of bed and get into the shower. My eyes stung as I turned the lamp near my bed on to see the way towards the bathroom, I rubbed them as I let out a long yawn and proceeded towards that direction and began muttering to myself.
“Fuu, why can’t I get used to this already it’s been almost half a year since I started working in this company…”
More complaints came out but with the warm water hitting my body my senses started to awaken. I could now say that I was about ninety percent of my conscious self. With the smell of body-wash and shampoo lingering in the bathroom I wiped myself clean and started shaving and brushing my teeth finishing up by fixing my hair. I was now fully awake and dressed in formal wear I was ready to begin my day, all that’s left is making breakfast which was a simple buttered toast with egg and some orange juice.
I headed out the door after checking twice in the mirror making sure my tie and name tag near my chest pocket was properly placed. I have yet to buy a car but work is close to the small apartment I live in so I could manage with public transportation. The sun could be seen rising so I was still on time, but just to make sure I checked my watch and indeed there was still time to spare. It was a perfect day so far nothing in my way so I was walking to work with a smile on my face. The pays average so it’s not like I was thrilled with my job but a good day always welcomed.
Now then time to start making plans, first thing in my agenda greeting my bosses beautiful secretary who I fell in love with since I started working there. Progress has not been good since I can’t get passed formal greeting but maybe today is the day I will be able to hold a conversation with her. Ten minutes go by as I walk to the station as well as doing some self-reflection exercises practicing what I’m going to say. I reached the subway and swiped my card on the reader and get ready for the battle of getting into the tightly packed metro train.
I do a bit of breathing waiting for the next metro to arrive, around me were others heading to work also getting ready for the fight ahead. The losers will stay behind waiting for the next metro to come by while those who are able to get in will be rewarded with some minutes to drink coffee and chat before work. I didn’t care for either of those I just wanted more time to gaze upon the one I admired so winning here is a must.
The metro arrives and I started my dash placing my bag before me like a shield and start moving towards the nearest metro cars door near me while finding gaps between the other guys around me. Since its morning there’s a division on the subway platform for the ladies and guys. I succeed in entering and finding a seat, luck was still on my side since I rarely get a seat even if I come early. I am nearing my thirties but have yet to gain a bulky body, what can I say there’s just no time to exercise. I check my phone and start reading today’s news and any information that’s useful for me. I settle down and wait for the station near my workplace to come.
It’s a small walk from the subway to the workplace I still had time to have a decent meal but I opt against it and head towards the large building I work in. I head up to the floor wear my firm's office is at and look around as soon as I get off the elevator.
The place reeks of a strong bitter scent the medicine for every adult’s morning around here, coffee. I head up to the machine and make small talk with the other employees still looking around while making coffee for myself. I usually go for more sugar on mine but I felt today I had to grow up so I only placed one instead of the usual three sugar packets. It was bitter but I felt confident now, there was a least one change today so maybe things will go differently.
Only five more minutes till we need to start working, my boss is strict on time spent and would go off on anyone who isn’t working when the hour reaches seven. I checked my phone again reading junk mail pretending to be busy it would be a waste if I get stuck in idle chat when my bosses’ secretary passes by me.
The elevator rings and some people get out. Success, I get to see her today but as always she comes just on time to greet and begin work which makes it hard for me to start a decent conversation with her, as she gets near me I start clearing my throat silently.
“Morning Rachel, nice job getting here on time.”
“Hello, yes today I got lucky it was a nice morning at least.”
She did a quick smile and headed to her spot placing her items on the desk. Guess that’s it for my chance in the morning, with a bit of a depressing feeling I start my work. At precisely seven the boss comes out of the elevator and starts his morning inspection while heading towards his office making sure everyone seated and working. I begin typing while taking a few glances in front of the bosses office were Rachel works, she is busy and doesn’t notice.
The day ends and we all do our farewells it’s frustrating but I got nowhere today I gather my things and ready up to go home. I was busy with last minute details on my report so I couldn’t make it on time to chat with her in the end.
She has a car so I had no chance after she walks outside the building and goes to the company’s parking lot while I head to the subway which is the other way. I do a deep sigh and head to the elevator waiting for it to stop at my floor to go down.
I’m the last person on this floor as silence dominates the area, the elevator dings and opens its door and there was one other person onboard. As I was looking at my phone I raised my face to see a Rachel standing there.
“Oh your still here? Seems you’re also going home, I forgot something so can you wait a bit it’s quite eerie to be here when there’s no one else.”
“Sure take your time I’ll be here.”
As she went inside I did a small triumphant pose, my luck is still good, let’s make the best of this. I go back to looking at my phone while checking for any food places around here it should be fine to invite her to eat right? I still have a decent amount of money on me since I just got paid on Friday everything seems good, now to work up the courage to invite her. It seems Rachel found what she was looking for and starts walking towards me again.
“Everything alright? Did you find what you were searching for?”
“Thankfully yes, just a paper I need to turn in tomorrow good thing I didn’t go home yet or else it would have been impossible to work on tonight.”
“That’s great should we head out then seems the cleaning crew will start coming up soon so the elevator will be full if we don’t hurry?”
“Sure, again sorry for having you wait on me.”
She got on first and pressed the button to head down as I tried to refrain myself from staring too much. Getting a bit nervous I start going through topics before the elevator reaches the first floor but was interrupted with a question.
“It’s late you sure are diligent if you’re working after hours even though we don’t get pay for doing extra.”
“Oh that’s fine I was just finishing up the spreadsheet to make tomorrow’s meeting easier for me just that the fine details take up time.”
Good, we exchanged a few more things about work but sadly the conversation stayed on that topic nothing personal could be added guess I’m failing here. The elevator reaches the bottom floor and the doors open and both of us head towards the front doors.
It was my last chance for today so I was working up the courage to ask her out to a place to eat, maybe it would be to forward since we only talk a little. After closing the front door she was getting ready to go towards the parking lot.
“Before you leave want to head somewhere to eat since it’s this late… of course, it’s my treat if you don’t mind, since eating out alone can be quite sad?”
Making a dumb excuse I wait a bit for her response, she looked a bit surprised maybe it was too much for me. But slowly she did a small nod.
“Sure I don’t mind but I’ll pay for my share since I would feel bad letting you pay for it, I was just about to head home to cook up something but guess eating out isn’t so bad once in a while.”
I couldn’t believe it, was today all of my lives luck put in one day. Guess it’s a bit much to just blame it on luck, I wanted to strike another pose. Then a problem arose in my mind, how do we get there I don’t have a car so I guess it would be hers, but would she just accept a random guy to give a ride to.
I start looking around and there was a small café, where it wouldn’t be too bad if we go there since it’s only opened at night and coworkers went home a while ago. I point to the café and tell her if it’s okay and we both cross the street and enter.
The place was spacious and neat everything looked clean so it was worth coming here, we wait to get seated and got placed near the window in a two-seat table. They handed us a menu and we started looking for what we should order. The meals displayed on the menu looked tasty maybe because the shop was small you didn’t expect the food given here would be high classed but it had a variety of Mediterranean food. I choose something simple like a chicken salad while Rachel went with shrimp pasta. While waiting we chatted away with whatever came to mind. I was still in a dream or so it seemed so nothing I was doing seemed real to me but I was concentrating hard on what was being said.
Around fifteen minutes our meals arrived, first was the chicken then the pasta we starting eating. Both meals went with whine which was a nice add-on, it was only a small glassful so Rachel could still drive home. After the meals, we ordered small pastries which were on a little pamphlet on the table it looks too tasty to go without having one.
Seems we spend more than I planned since we came at seven and its almost nearing nine thirty not that I minded. Rachel started to ask for the bill and I began taking out my part of the food, I really wanted to pay for both since it was my suggestion but got refused again. After leaving the shop I accompany her back to the other side of the street, the night was starting to get cool but there were no clouds yet to be seen and a bright moon was shining.
“It was a nice meal I had no idea there was a good place to eat so close to work.”
“I been there a few times but indeed it was great to be with the company instead of just being alone thanks for inviting me.”
“No problem, it was by accident today but why not go somewhere else to eat another day with a bit more time I know a few more areas but they're not as close to this one to work.”
“Sounds good well I need to be heading home so guess it’s goodnight, we’ll see each other tomorrow.”
We did a handshake and headed our separate ways I was about to cross the street after seeing her figure off towards the parking lot. I was still in a bit of high so I reorganized what happened today in my mind while doing a small inner cheer for the progress that I made. I had to cross the street to the other side again so I waited for the lights to change and when the time came for me to cross I began walking. I was passing the second lane when I heard a large crash only to react late to the sound. I felt a large object hit me from behind and felt my body tossed to the other side, my conscious quickly fades.
