My name is John and this is the story of how I met the love of my life...
As I jogged down the path that I jogged every afternoon I tripped and twisted my ankle. Normally I would get back up and walk it off but this time there was a beautiful woman with long brown hair walking towards me.
Her hand reached out to help me up as she asked if I was alright. I nodded and acted as if my injury was worse than it truly was. She helped me walk to the bench she was sitting at and helped me sit down.
She grabbed her book and was about to close it when I noticed it was filled with drawings. I assumed they were drawn by her and asked to see them.
She opened the drawing pad to the first page and described the photo to me. It was a young man helping her change a flat tire on her car. The second page was of a different man paying for her groceries that she didn't have the money to afford. The third drawing was of another man offering his umbrella as she walked across the street in the rain.
I noticed each of the drawings had a certain theme to them and the best way to describe it was a modern-day fairy tale. As she was about to flip to the next page her phone rang. She apologized and told me she had to answer it.
Now I'm not one to listen in on people's conversations but her voice was so beautiful. There was no way I couldn't listen to her. Still to this day I didn't know what she did for her friend, but I knew her help was needed and she was the only one that could be counted on.
She wasn't on the phone long before she hung up. As she put the phone in her purse she told me to ice my ankle and quickly headed towards her car. As she was driving away I noticed she left her drawing pad behind.
I flipped through the rest of her drawings. The last drawing wasn't finished but I knew what the picture indicated. I knew she would come back for her drawing pad and suddenly an idea popped in my head.
The next morning, I hung out around the bench that we sat at the previous day, but I made sure to stay out of sight. I didn't want to seem like I was waiting for her.
I paced around as I waited, hoping she would show. Minutes felt like hours. With each car that pulled in my heart skipped a beat. After about the fiftieth car she pulled in. She walked towards the bench my eyes were set on. I came out from across the parking lot, making my way towards her. Out of nowhere a man walked quickly up to her grabbing her purse and took off running.
I ran after him as fast as I could. She chased after him until she noticed that I was too. He ran around the corner and up the bridge. I chased after him but could no longer see the owner of the purse.
Catching my breath wasn’t easy by the time I retrieved her purse but I knew it was worth it. She walked around the corner and sprinted towards me once she realized I had her purse. Of course I had to flirt with her a little bit. I held her purse out asking if it was hers. As she tried grabbing it I pulled it away telling her that it was now mine.
She yanked it from my hands and went through it making sure everything was still there. She thanked me and headed back in the direction which we originally came. I knew this was the only chance I had to quickly make my move. Besides there was only reason I was willing to give up my daily jog.
Once I caught up to her I told her I had something I thought she would want. I handed her the drawing pad she left behind. I was shocked she hadn't noticed it since that was the reason she was even at the park.
If only you could see the excitement on her face. It's indescribable. She gave me the longest hug I've ever received from a stranger; probably the only hug I've even received by a stranger.
There's a surprise in there for you, I said to her. Then asked her to open to the last drawing. She flipped it to the unfinished drawing she drew of a man bringing her purse back to her. Another modern-day fairy tale. I flipped the page where there was a drawing I drew of two stick figures sitting at a table in a restaurant. Underneath the drawing was a question asking if she would have dinner with me.
The most beautiful smile grew on her face. She grabbed a pen from her purse. I looked behind me seeing the thief who also happened to be my closest friend who was giving me a thumbs up. I gave him a thumbs up back and turned around. She drew on my drawing the name of our now favorite restaurant with a day and time.
And that my sons was how I set up the very first date your mother and I had.
