Snug's Shorts

Free-falling

Free-falling

Oct 22, 2017

Alice wasn't one for heights. She had crushed any other fear like a pro. Holding spiders in her bare hands, allowing snakes to slide up her body. She had even made it through the death of her beloved father. But heights? She couldn't grasp it. So when her best friend asked to hang out at the highest point of the city to watch the stars, she was a bit reluctant. On the other hand, this was as good of a time as any to try and wrangle this fear of hers. She ended up saying yes, mainly so she wouldn't seem like some sort of coward.

Now here she was, trailing behind her best friend as they climbed the stairwell to the top of the building. He works there, and he always says that the view is beautiful. Alice steeled herself, legs wobbling slightly as they stepped out onto the roof. Suddenly, she was grabbed by the wrist and being dragged to the edge by her friend, causing her to stumble and balk.

"Wow, look at how high we are." She heard him say. He sounded much farther than he should've been. Then she felt pressure on her back, and she was over the edge. It almost felt like it was happening in slow motion. She tried to catch herself on the edge of the wall, but her fingers just barely slid against the cold side of the building.

And then she was falling.

The air was sucked from her chest as the world streaked past her body at a speed she didn't think was possible. All she could do was squeeze her eyes shut as she fell. When the ground never came, she opened her eyes again, only to awaken on the roof again, cold with sweat.

"Are you alright? You passed out!" A voice pulled her from her jumbled thoughts. The voice of someone she thought was her friend.

"Stay away from me." She murmured, slowly pushing herself up. Alice backed away from him, watching the confusion cover his face before it became panic. She had backed too far, and her feet were no longer touching the floor. Again, just like she had been a minute ago, she was plummeting. This time, though, she pulled her limbs in on herself, forcing body into a little ball. What was happening and why? Of course, shortly before she should've hit the ground, she awoke again on the roof. That god forsaken roof.

Every time she tried something new to escape, but it only resulted in her death, followed by waking up. Finally, she turned to simply stepping off of the building, letting herself fall. Why the hell not? She'd just wake up again on the damned roof anyway. When she'd wanted to face her fear, this isn't what she had in mind, but it was working. As she fell, her face was simply frustrated and confused rather than fearful. Then, as she neared the ground, she steeled herself to awaken once more, but it never came. She had just fallen to the ground, body a mess of broken parts.

Oh much better, I found this story to be very distinctive and compelling. I noticed no typos nor grammar mistakes in my first reading. You really had me fooled during the first incident of the fall. The main strength of this story is how it's so short and tight, but it left me wanting a little more. Maybe you could go into detail describing the third incident of falling before Alice figures out the pattern.
