Kato looked up at the dark ceiling of the cave-room. He probably shouldn't have gotten that angry at his parents or they would've stayed and they could've worked something out. But his temper was sort of hard to control; especially when it comes to the people he cares about.
"Hey, Kato?" Seth muttered in his ear and he shifted, looking him in the eyes. "Mind if I ask something a bit personal?"
The other demons continued their celebration while they sat in the middle of the floor. "Um... sure." He said, raising an eyebrow and trying to think of what he wanted to know.
"How... did your mother die?" His face was soft as he asked, his fingers running along Kato's thighs softly.
He stiffened, remembering the incident like it was just yesterday. Pressing his lips together, he turned and laid his head on his chest. "She died... because I made a mistake..." He muttered and he felt Seth pause.
"A mistake?" He wondered aloud.
"Yeah." He sighed through his nose and curled up on his side. "I was on a school field trip with my classmates in elementary school to go to a circus that was passing by. I didn't really want to go because unlike other people, I was really sensitive as a kid. I couldn't stand any form of cruelty." He shifted slightly. "When we were there, a lot of people were performing tricks. Hope sparked and I relaxed but my hopes faded when they brought out the tigers and the horses, which they whipped."
"I heard about those," Seth said in disgust and Kato nodded.
"I did this thing I called having a fit which I did whenever something terrible was happening." He felt his hands begin to shake, remembering it. "I would stare at first, then I'd start crying. I would be frozen to the spot and tears would just fall. Then I'd start mumbling and I'd curl up on the floor. I wouldn't remember doing it, but I heard that I said things like "cruel" or "sinners" and other things like that.
"Well, after that... They called my mom to come pick me up. So she did. I calmed down by the time she arrived, but I was still upset. We were on our way home when she was trying to tell me it's alright and reached over to pat my head..." He paused. "She wasn't paying attention to the road in front of her and we veered off course and rolled down a hill. The next thing I knew I was looking at my mother who was a few feet in front of the car, having flown out the front window. There was blood everywhere." He began to shake violently, hiding his face in his shirt. "If I had just dealt with it, she wouldn't have come to pick me up and she wouldn't have died..."
"Oh, Kato," Seth muttered, picking him up slightly to put him on his lap. "It's not your fault."
"Yeah, it is." Tears spilled. "It's my fault that I ruined her life."
"It is not," Seth said, lifting his chin up and wiping away his tears. "It's not your fault you can recognize wrong from right. It is not your fault at all." He leaned down and pressed their lips together, taking his breath away.
He snaked his hands up his chest and kissed back, tilting his head and closing his eyes before having to stop and take a breath. They looked at each other for a moment. "Thank you." He muttered, smiling softly.
"Anything for you." He replied, putting their heads together.
"What're you guys doin'?" Henry asked, making them jump for the second time that day. He was hovering over them, carrying Kato's backpack. "Went and got this. Here you go." He handed it over.
"Oh. Thank you." He smiled and held onto it. It felt fluffy, which probably meant that he'd put his clothes in it.
"Was the picture in there your mother?" His cheeks were a slight pink as he reached up to scratch the back of his head. When Kato widened his eyes, he quickly spoke. "I couldn't help but see when I was packing your stuff! Sorry!"
He cleared his throat and nodded. "Yeah."
"You have a picture?" Seth asked, rubbing his belly. "Mind if I see? It would be cool to see where your looks come from."
Kato blushed and nodded again, unzipping his backpack and digging through until he found the folded photo he had kept in secret. He'd taken it from a photograph in his old house and had to hide it so it wouldn't have been taken away.
He unfolded it and looked at the familiar smiling face. His mother was truly beautiful. The most beautiful woman he'd ever laid his eyes on. She was as tall as he was and had a small frame. She was smiling brightly, the freckles on her cheeks and nose only making it brighter as it showed her pearly white teeth and her hand was running through her beautiful long light brown hair that looked almost white. Her pale blue eyes shimmered in the sun and the summer blue dress she wore flowed with the wind.
"Now I see," Seth muttered, kissing his cheek. "You've got her eyes."
Kato smiled. "Yeah. I get a lot of things from her."
Whistling came from behind them and the demons crowded around. "That's your mother? You two look so much alike! Besides the black hair." Someone named Greg said. Their names were unnaturally normal for demons.
He quickly hid the photo, blushing madly. "H-hey!"
Franky tilted his head. "Definitely. Couldn't agree more." He nodded and stood straight. "No wonder you look cute when your father looked anything but."
He pouted, puckering his lips and glaring. "I'm not cute."
"I'm the only one allowed to call him that," Seth warned, laughing and holding him tightly.
"Right right." Henry waved his hand dismissively and nudged his friend. "Lucky goose. Getting such a cutie for a lover."
A growl came from deep behind Kato's throat and he turned away. "I'm not cute."
"Sorry about them Kitty." Seth kissed the top of his forehead. "How about you get some sleep? I bet you're tired after how long this day was."
Kato looked at him carefully before nodding. "Okay."
"Oh, that's right. You're half-human so you need sleep." Another female demon named Daniella said and the others murmured to each other. "That's too bad. We'd have enjoyed getting to know you more." She pouted. "Well, I guess tomorrow then."
"I'm sorry." He muttered, embarrassed as he stood.
"Not at all!" Another one piped in. "It's interesting to know we need to feed and take care of someone. Since we don't really need much to keep alive, it's a first."
"Exactly!" Daniella clapped her hands together. "Get some rest! We'll make sure you're safe!" She gave a thumbs up that made him chuckle.
"Thank you." He smiled before he felt himself tilting and realized he was being picked up. He gasped and wrapped his arms quickly around Seth's neck as he smirked down at him.
"Let's go." He said, grinning at everyone. "We'll be back!" Then he began to run, carrying Kato bridal-style through the halls.
It was oddly comforting. The way his arms warmed him and held him close as if nothing in the world could touch him. He closed his eyes against his chest, taking in his sweet scent and listening to the beating of his heart. It was such a beautiful sound.
"You still awake?" Seth asked and Kato opened his eyes, looking up at him and nodding. "That's good."
They were inside the room they were in before. "Huh. I guess I am tired." He said before yawning.
Seth laughed and walked over to the bed, moving the covers in a sloppy way and laying him down. "By the way, you're pretty light."
He rolled his eyes before closing them. "Mmhmm."
He felt Seth get in beside him, turning and holding him to his chest. "How about we go out tomorrow? Get something to eat in the human realm?"
He smiled. "That sounds great." He muttered, nuzzling his chest. "Just the two of us?"
"Just the two of us."
He liked the sound of that very much. Just the two of them going out to eat. He was definitely excited. But that didn't stop him from beginning to doze off as he clutched to the fabric of Seth's shirt.
Seth began to hum and Kato listened to it carefully, his limps slowly going numb and his mind going blank with sleep. What a beautiful sound. Those were his thoughts as he drifted away into the comfortable darkness.
